czechbookworld news autumn2007s pring Basic Facts About Book Production in the Czech Republic in 2006 JAROSLAV CÍSAŘ GRAND BIBLIO j.cisar@grandprinc.cz INTRODUCTION In 2003, nearly 16,500 books were published in the Czech Republic, thus achieving a new record. Thereafter this number fell into gradual decline, giving the impression that a new record was unlikely. Nevertheless, the 2006 figures for book production in the Czech Republic produced a pleasant shock: the new record of 2006 exceeded the 2006 total by more than 500 titles, and compared to 2005 production rose by an impressive 11%. Nevertheless, the beginning of the year gave no grounds for any great optimism. Publishers were speaking of decreased sales; booksellers were complaining about stagnating turnovers. Nonetheless, the unfavourable first half of the year was followed by the satisfaction of the autumn months. From September and October, customers were paying more frequent visits to bookshops. And, more important still, they were buying books. Total book production for the year 2006 is breathtaking. An absolute record was achieved against any other year since the social and economic Changes of November 1989, after which point private companies were again allowed to publish and sell books. EXACT FIGURES STILL UNDISCLOSED It remains the case that the figures relating to the Czech book market do not disclose what many strategists and economists would find the most interesting: i.e the total turnover and profit and the performances of individual companies. Unfortunately, such data typically remains taboo, with publishers and booksellers reluctant to disclose it for reasons of competition. Other existing tools, such as the Commercial Register as it is available on the internet, are not transparent enough. The tension in the book industry is evident. The struggle between publishers and booksellers who view one another as competition continues. While larger companies grow stronger, smaller ones often face existential problems. There is therefore a need for us to be cautious over what we are applauding. As the number of very large book publishers (i.e. those capable of bringing out at least one hundred new titles or editions each year) declined in comparison with 2005, the record was broken by work produced by a lesser number of book producers in general, providing convincing evidence that the Czech book industry is becoming concentrated in fewer hands. BOOK PROMOTION EVENTS BEAR FRUIT Although the results are not yet significantly material, campaigns and events focused on promoting books and reading are obviously beginning to bear fruit. The largest event for the promotion of books and reading among children is held by public libraries under the name Night with Andersen. It returned in March 2007 for the seventh time, with the involvement of more than 500 libraries. The event has spread beyond the borders of the Czech Republic, and now includes libraries from Slovakia, Poland and Slovenia. Notable and systematic work in this field is carried out by the BookWorld (Svět knihy) company through its Growing with the Book campaign; in 2006, this campaign gained the support of the Ministry of Culture. There were also other initiatives, such as The Czech Republic Reads to its Children and websites dedicated to literature for children. For the adult public, the Magnesia Litera book awards have attracted the greatest interest. These are by far the most visible awards for high-quality literature in the Czech Republic, tending to overshadow the ambitious state prizes for literature and literary translation, as well as many other awards. The Litera society, which prepares the awards show and brings it to the screen for Česká televize (Czech Television), reports very encouraging results from booksellers with regard to sales of winning and nominated titles. Publishing books for relatively few readers on a relatively small territory in what is not a world language, is a demanding business which will for ever be beset by problems. Nonetheless, one has to bear in mind that the conditions for book publishing are harder still in certain other countries, where the habit of reading and building a home library is not at all as strong as it is in the Czech Republic. But surveys on reading habits confirm the world-wide trend that the number of active readers declines along with age. BOOK PRODUCTION With its 17,019 published titles in 2006, the Czech Republic ranks amongst the top publishing countries. When this figure is set alongside the number of inhabitants, the Czech Republic is No. 1 in the world. It should be stated, however, that this fact says nothing about the quality of the titles produced. TABLE I Overview of the number of book titles published in the Czech Republic in Source: National Library of the Czech Republic

czechbookworldnews autumn2007s pring2008 Last year saw a change from the practice of publishing mostly new titles. Of the total of more than 17,000 published titles, new editions comprised almost a quarter (4239 titles); the same index meant one ninth only in This summary is again based on records processed by the National Library of the Czech Republic, i.e. on national bibliographical data prepared on the basis of copies provided mandatorily. The high number of book titles published in 2006 was underlined by the fact that the declining average cost of books was compensated by Czech publishers by increasing the number of titles published in order to maintain the same financial turnover volume. Last year, 1314 publishing entities published at least one book in the Czech Republic. (In 2005, the number was 1356.) These statistics also include data on so-called non-market production, which does not reach bookshops for the general public. Such titles consist in particular of special-purpose or regional editions, the work of government institutions and a great number of titles published by universities and educational organizations and institutions of central government. We can estimate that these make up approximately one half of the total number of published book titles. The other half, i.e. approximately 8500 titles, is on sale in the general bookseller network. In 2006, one-tenth of books produced in the Czech Republic did not include an assigned ISBN number. Most of these titles were produced by government organizations and institutions for special-purpose publications. REGISTRATION OF PUBLISHERS As of 31 December 2006, a total of 3908 publishers were registered in the Czech Republic (see TABLE II). Last year 154 new publishing entities were established, and roughly the same number announced the termination of their activities. We estimate that about half of the publishers registered do not publish actively, even though their registration is retained: the national ISBN agency in accordance with the methodology applicable internationally cannot exclude any entity from the lists. This means that a complete summary of publishers active in the field since November 1989 is available. Since that time, approximately 1000 publishers have officially ended their book-publishing activities. Compared to other EU countries, book publishing in the Czech Republic is to a large extent still apportioned among a high number of publishers, though a decisive share of Czech TABLE II Number of Publishers Registered in the Czech Republic in book production is provided by a limited number only. In 2006 more than one hundred titles were produced by only thirty-three publishers, from which almost one half (fifteen) are publishers of universities and institutions of central government. More than twenty titles, which may serve as a criterion for regular and continuous publishing, were produced by a total of 170 publishers in This represents an increase of approximately one tenth compared with 2005, when the number was 156. These indices have stabilized in recent years. With regard to the fact that exact data on the numbers of copies of specific titles are not available, we cannot make an objective estimate of the real share claimed by leading publishers in the total volume of production and what remains for the smaller and very small ones, which are the most numerous. 5 4 5 TOP LISTS OF THE LARGEST PUBLISHERS TABLE III shows the largest book producers in the Czech Republic by the number of book titles published in Though this criterion is relatively mechanical, it has a definite value and is not without interest; it gives at least a brief overview of the turnover of the companies. On the other hand, it does not tell us anything about the quality of the books and the editorial demands they make. Unfortunately, this overview does not provide us with other precious indices, such as the total number of copies or the profit of the companies, which would permit an objective quantitative evaluation of their real position in the Czech book market. The number of titles published in a year, by which publishers are ranked in TABLE III, includes new titles only (not reprints). As publishers of universities and institutions of central government typically publish a high number of titles on specialist topics in relatively low numbers of copies, these publishers are shown in a separate table (TABLE IV). As with the previous table, the number of titles published in a year does not include reprints, only new titles. The volume of production for this type of publishers is primarily defined according to the needs of a given school, the meeting of the needs of the government or parliament and the final processing of statistical surveys. Nonetheless, in certain cases there is broad interest in the work of university publishers in the general book market. In many cases such books are prevented from being available in bookshops for the general public by the different economic principles according to which their production is calculated and their prices are set, etc. TABLE IV Largest book producers in the Czech Republic by number of titles published in 2006 (only publishers of universities and institutions of central government) The standings give in brackets the position in the 2005 Top Twenty book producers' table. Last year, book production in the Czech Republic was dominated by books in Czech with an 87% share (14,832 titles). Another 932 titles were published in Czech with parts in another language; in this segment, there was a relatively high increase in comparison with previous years. (Against 2004, the increase was by 109 titles, against 2005, 183 titles.) A total of 207 multilingual publications were published last year. As to books from Czech publishing houses in foreign languages, English was again very dominant: its share again represented 4% of total production. The number of titles published last year by Czech publishers is given by foreign language in TABLE V. Slovak has again shown a huge increase: the number of publications in Slovak has increased from 28 in 2004 to nearly four times that amount last year (104). The statistics also report the publishing of four titles in Chinese, two in Vietnamese, and one in each of Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Danish and Modern Hebrew. TABLE V Number of books published by Czech publishers in foreign languages, language English German French Spanish Slovak Russian Polish TABLE VI Source: National Library of the Czech Republic Comparison of the number of titles published for different types of literature, Fiction Books for children School and university textbooks Source: National Library of the Czech Republic

czechbookworldnews autumn2007s pring2008 The share claimed by fiction of books produced last year remained at the level of previous years. It reached almost 22% (3746 titles), although this figure rose again in absolute terms. A significant increase was registered in the production of literature for children, both in absolute terms and in the share of total production 424 titles and 7.5%. In 2005, the share was 5.6%; in 2003 it failed to reach 5%. The share of school and university textbooks in total book production remained at approximately 11%. Nevertheless, this particular segment shows growth in terms of the number of published titles. A summary of the last six years is given in TABLE VI. TRANSLATED WORKS In 2006, translated works accounted for approximately one third (nearly 31% - see TABLE VII) of the total volume of Czech book production. From this point of view, the Czech Republic, along with the Baltic States and Hungary, produces the highest proportion of translated works in the world. This is a logical result of the fact that Czech is not a world language; by the publishing of translations it opens the door for other, more numerous, language cultures. Last year, Czech publishers gave their readers translated works in 43 languages, including some which are no longer spoken, such as classical Latin, Old Czech and Old Slovak, and languages with few users, such as Indian Nahuati, Coptic, Sanskrit, Bengalese and Tibetan. The identity of the three most-translated languages in the Czech Republic has remained unchanged since The dominance of English continues: it accounted for almost half of all published translations. Compared to 2005 the number of translations from the English was higher by 817 titles, i.e. by more than 18%. The number of translations from the German also rose by more than one fifth as against 2005, with translations from the French reaching approximately the same level. Translations from the Spanish are approaching the number of translations from the French, having achieved stable growth in recent years. By last year, Spanish was the fourth most-translated language in the Czech Republic; the number grew more than four times against the figure for 2005 (from 43 to 179). Slovak is gradually reaching the level of Spanish; it is the most-translated Slavic language in the Czech Republic. The rate of growth in terms of the number of translations from the Slovak is impressive it has increased 5.5 times since Since the split of the state of Czechoslovakia and the accession of both new states to the EU, the interest of Czechs in events in Slovakia has shown a steady increase. It is less common for Czechs to read Slovak books in the original than it is for Slovaks to read books in Czech. Translations from the Russian or the Polish maintained their positions last year, though their numbers showed a slight decrease. Translations from other Slavic languages are significantly less frequent in the Czech Republic; these account for only about twenty titles a year, and 2006 was no exception in this regard. (Twenty-two literary works were translated TABLE VII Numbers of translated works published in the Czech Republic, Total from English from German from French from Slovak from Polish from Russian Source: National Library of the Czech Republic from other Slavic literatures, the majority of these from the Serbian twelve, as compared to five in 2005.) Languages from other large cultural areas which in 2006 provided Czech bookshops with most translated titles, include (data from 2005 are given in brackets for comparison): Italian 86 (80), which has thus become the sixth most-translated foreign language in the Czech Republic; Dutch 43 (23); Scandinavian languages (Swedish 20 (16), Norwegian 11 (6), Danish 6 (10) and Finnish 6 (6)). Twelve titles were also translated from the Hungarian and seven from the Portuguese. Exact figures for works translated from foreign languages in the last six years are shown in TABLE VII. CONCLUSION Over the past twelve months since a similar summary was published in Czech Book World News the conditions, legal framework, incentives and state support affecting the production of books in the Czech Republic have not changed significantly. Fortunately, the interest of book buyers and enthusiasts in the product has not changed either. We can only regret that the field of literature and book culture in the Czech Republic still has very few sponsors and benefactors. When evaluating the state of the book industry in the Czech Republic and its characteristic trends, we can identify the following: 1. The continuation of the hard struggle for small entities in the face of large and strong competition, especially apparent in the case of companies emphasizing distribution and sale to end customers; still affecting publishers, too. 2. Retail chains of the hypermarket type are backing down slightly from their initial enthusiasm for selling books. In certain cases, they have started limiting the area given over to the selling of books. Customers, especially those who know about books, tend to prefer traditional bookshops, where they can obtain other services and information related to books. 3. The profiling of publishing houses for specific segments of book production has basically been completed. Attempts at stepping outside the limited and well-established areas of production usually provide rather odd results, though these still occur on a regular basis.

There is still a remarkably high number of book distributors on a relatively small territory when this is compared to the book industries of more advanced countries. 5. More and more, large companies are employing more progressive methods of keeping records and using computers and software for preparing books, sales and ranges; here the average small bookseller often loses points against his competitors, but there are exceptions to this. 6. Book sales on the internet are growing, but percentage increases show that these are built on a much lower base and that there will most likely be no massive growth as optimists have predicted. Practices in other countries serve to support this impression. 7. Prague is still the heart of the Czech Republic in terms of book sales. The capital s share is estimated at 60 65%. 8. Compared to countries with more advanced book industries, the Czech Republic still has relatively weak campaigns for the promotion of books and reading, and these attract no great support from central government. Unfortunately, sponsors and other investors from the private sector in the Czech Republic still consider the book industry insufficiently attractive and thus their support is relatively insignificant. 9. The alarming results of surveys on reading carried out among children and young people are closely related to the previous point. 10. The same as mentioned in point 8 unfortunately applies to the cultural export, i.e., an efficient system for the promotion of Czech literature abroad has yet to be established. (This is not the case in other advanced countries.) Nonetheless, interest in books in the Czech Republic is holding up. Here is the best proof of this: the Czech Republic now holds seven book exhibitions on a regular basis; the number of book prizes is growing (it currently stands at around 40!); more new, well-equipped bookshops are being opened than is the case in other countries. 15 Ten Years of BookWorld Looking back on the company's ten-year history with Dana Kalinová, its managing director 1) Ten years ago on 27 August 1997, to be precise the Association of Czech Booksellers and Publishers founded Svět knihy s.r.o. [BookWorld Ltd.], whose task would be to organize and hold a book fair in the Czech Republic. Mrs Kalinová, you were appointed this company's first head, and you and your small team of colleagues have given it its shape for the whole of the ten years. When you look back on those years, what feelings do you have? I have always felt a strong sense of responsibility towards those members of the board of the ACBP who first approached me with the offer of the job; they placed their trust in me and gave me a great deal of support from the very beginning to make my work as easy as possible. And after so many years, I feel able to emphasize the splendid efforts of all those who work or have worked on the preparations for the fair and the company's other activities; these have served to bring the name BookWorld to the fore, and it is now well known abroad as well as in the Czech Republic. 2) What were your early expectations of this highly complex job, and where did you look for inspiration? I didn't have a very clear idea of what was ahead of me. At the time I was approached by the board of the ACBP I had worked as a librarian for many years; I had no education in economics or marketing. I know that I had an intuitive grasp of what I would need to do, but had I not had the opportunity to learn from book fairs abroad I would never have managed my work for an international clientele. At the beginning I received a lot of help from Mr Kanzelsberger, who shared with me his knowledge of the Leipzig Book Fair. I was also inspired by the work of the management of the Frankfurt Book Fair and that of the BIEF (the Association of French Publishers). 3) Who and what helped you towards the conviction that you were heading in the right direction? The most important thing for me has always been the opinions of exhibitors. The constructive criticism I receive from a range of experienced publishers and booksellers is of primary importance to me. I try to keep pace with trends in other countries. Although we are not in a position to offer our clients the prospect of highly lucrative contracts owing to the size of our book market and its capital potential we are in a position to offer them high-quality services, to mediate business contacts, to make them more visible in the Czech Republic and in other countries, too. Many exhibitors place a high value on this care: it helps them in the forging of stable and reliable business interests. I should also mention here the enormous help I was given by the invitation of Peter Weidhaas (then managing director of the Frankfurt Book Fair) to join a group of managing directors of international book fairs from all over the world. My colleagues from abroad are able to tell me honestly what I am doing wrong, and to praise me for what I am doing right... In spite of increasing pressures of international competition we continue to respect the ethic of a mutually beneficial working friendship. 4) The activities of BookWorld have expanded over the years. In addition to holding the Prague International Book Fair and several shows elsewhere in the Czech Republic, for a number of years now you have "exported" Czech books to important book shows abroad. You are also involved in the organization of exhibitions and competitions, and you are guarantor of the Growing with the Book campaign, among other things. How do you manage to push these various activities through while ensuring their honourable success? Of course, all the other activities were generated by the demands of the fair and the requirements of our clients and partners. Without their promotion abroad, Czech books and the entities active in the Czech book market would be unable to retain the attention of professional publics elsewhere in the world. In this age of the Internet, there is no denying that most business between countries is performed electronically; in spite of this, meetings in person - which may not be representative of the whole profession - remain important. For this reason, in the selection proceedings presided over each year by the Ministry of Culture, we work hard to defend the need to hold international exhibitions: thus far, we have always succeeded in doing so. Were it not for the support of the state we would be quite unable to hold a large fair for the Czech book world. Our guiding principle is the maintaining of a wide network of personal contacts, which includes experts from Ministry departments, associations of publishers and booksellers, literary agencies, publishing houses and organizations which hold literary festivals and book fairs, and Czech scholars. That people such as this should attend exhibitions in the Czech Republic is important for the professional future of everyone involved: their participation encorages the interest of publishers and agents from other countries in what the Czech book scene has to offer. It is impossible to measure directly the impact of their individual contributions: their resonance has a long-term effect. One such effect is the steady interest of exhibitors from abroad in the Prague Book Fair. The Growing with the Book campaign came into being in reaction to alarming statistics on Czechs and their attitudes to reading. It is our responsibility to propagate the world of books and help it to grow. I believe that the campaign will be joined by all those who see the negative influence being worked by an ignorance of literature on the future of the profession and the intellectual potential of the country. 5) Do you have any surprises in store for visitors to next year's fair? We are always looking to come up with something interesting. I am especially pleased with the "Love and Passion in Literature" theme: as well as being attractive to readers it is indicative of the strength of feeling that can be evoked in the course of reading. I am looking forward to working with colleagues from Spain as we prepare their involvement as guests of honour. I am sure the Institute of Egyptology will put on a very interesting show. The BookWorld fair is always a great opportunity for the media and advertisers in the promotion of all the book-related professions. 6) Are there any new trends at book fairs abroad which you would like to carry over to the Prague fair? In terms of how the fair is organized for exhibitors, we do our best as far as local conditions allow to manage things in ways familiar to our clients from their experience of other countries. Many new fairs have appeared across the world recently, some of which receive such generous support from their states or city councils that it is very difficult for us to compete with them. At the same time fairs for the general public have highly attractive accompanying programmes, which draw in more visitors. The non-commercial part of the Prague fair demands a heavy investment; many of my counterparts abroad receive far greater support in this. For this reason one of our most important tasks is to maintain the position of the Prague fair as one of the biggest events in the books and literature calendar of the Czech Republic. We need to attract the right level of attention from organizations and individuals active in Czech culture and education. 7) What is your greatest wish for the next ten years? My wish is that the book-related professions here should continue to develop and that the BookWorld fair should aid them in this development with the result that books acquire new readers and the good name of Czech literature at home and abroad continues to gain in strength. The winner of the main award of the Magnesia Litera book prize (awarded April 2007) is the novel Simion Litnicul by contemporary Romanian writer Petru Cimpoesu. For the first time in its six-year history the jury chose its winner from the works nominated in the Translations category. (The winner is chosen from nominations declared in eight categories.) It is not, however, the first time a translated work has been victorious: in the very first year of the awards the overall winner was Böhmische Dörfer by German journalist Jürgen Serke (nominated for Publishing Excellence); the 2005 winner was Jan Novák's So Far So Good, which was written originally in English and translated into Czech with the assis-tance of the author. The contemporary novel Simion Litnicul was acclaimed by the jury for its faithful yet metaphorical depiction of post-communist realities in Romania, which in many ways are not very different from those of the Czech Republic. As Cimpoesu was unable to attend the awards ceremony, the prize and a financial award of 200,000 crowns (ca Euro) was conferred on the work's translator Jiří Našinec. The Litera in the new Literary Journalism category was awarded to Petra Dvořáková for her debut work Transfigured Dreams, a series of interviews with Christians who practise their faith both within and outside Church structures. This is Dvořáková's first work in any form: prior to its appearance her work also remained unpublished in periodicals, with the notable exception of those extracts from Transfigured Dreams which appeared in magazines. The prize for the best work of prose awarded after a secret ballot by a jury of thirty-five members went to Radka Denemarková for her novel Money from Hitler, a description of a woman's difficult, post-1990 return to her native village; the buildings and land which belonged to her family have been divided up among the local population following her own persecution by the Nazis and then the communists. The Silent Region by Stanislav Dvorský won the award for the best collection of poetry. Vladimír Justl (right), prizewinner for his editing of the Writings of Vladimír Holan, in conversation with singer/songwriter Jan Burian, moderator of the gala evening. In the Educational Literature category, the prize was awarded to biologist Jaroslav Flegr for his Frozen Evolution, a work which addresses the hypothesis that evolution is finite in certain animal species. The prize for Publishing Excellence went to the OIKOYMENH publishing house for its History of Philosophy series, while the best newcomer award was conferred from a field of three on David Zábranský for his novel Any Beach But This. The Readers' Award (taken from a survey of 12,000 readers) went to Jaroslav Rudiš for the novel Grand Hotel; an honorary Litera for his contribution to Czech literature was conferred on literary historian Vladimír Justl for his life-long tending of the work of poet Vladimír Holan. It has become traditional that the winner of the main Magnesia Litera prize receives a financial award. The main purpose of the whole awards programme and its live television broadcast is to promote an interest among the general public in high-quality books and thus to support sales. In some cases, winning titles from previous years have recorded a fourfold increase in sales within six months of the announcement of the awards. Awards are conferred by the Litera civic association, which is composed of members of all Czech associations and societies for literature and related fields. The principal sponsor of the Magnesia Litera awards is the Carlsbad Mineral Water company.

Books of a new quality from Printing House FINIDR Despite the fact that typography has a several hundred year history there is constantly something to develop and improve. Last year FINIDR, the largest book printers in the Czech Republic and an important international supplier, invested more than 200 million Czech Crowns into new technology. This give us the opportunity to print the books on a worldwide level based on the most up-to-date trends. The world is now dominated by new binding requirements. It is fashionable to have covers made from unconventional materials or with the cuts. Modern books does not have sharp corners, but they can be rounded, and they may have a CD or DVD attached to thema bookmark or a ribbon. For most of the books this is not a problem for FINIDR. We can produce modern and high quality books using our technology. A new book perfect binding line provides new types of binding, e.g. Swiss brochures or Ottabind. These bindings are stronger, more flexible, and make only a slight part in the total weight of the book. The color rendering is obvious, to which the clients of FINIDR are used to. Therefore it is not surprising that FINIDR in its twelve-year history has already produced more than one hundred million books.
