ALT type of mlty, modertely bitter, top-fermented beer, usully mber in colour, trditionlly ssocited with Düsseldorf. AMBER lger or le type beer whose colour is hlfwy between light nd drk beer. BARLEYWINE type of very bitter nd usully very sweet top-fermented beer, usully with 10% lcohol or more. BLACK IPA n Indi Ple Ale, or IPA, but very drk, often rosty in flvour, with pronounced hop flvours nd rom. In Czech: čern IPA. BOCK type of strong, bottom-fermented beer, often equivlent to Czech Specilní pivo. BOTTOM-FERMENTED BEER often clled lgers, these beers re generlly produced t colder tempertures, resulting in less-pronounced yest chrcter. In Czech: spodně kvšené pivo. DOPPELBOCK (from Germn) double bock n exceptionlly strong, bottom-fermented Germn beer whose colour rnges from rusty to deep brown. Strong nd rich, with long-lsting fom. Brnded dopplebock beers nerly lwys crry the tor suffix. IMPERIAL PILSNER / IMPERIAL LAGER type of strong, ple, bottom-fermented beer, like stronger version of clssic Czech světlý ležk. Mny brewers believe Imperil Lger nd Bock to be the sme thing. INDIA PALE ALE (IPA) type of top-fermented beer, usully golden or mber in colour, with pronounced hop bitterness nd flvours. PILSNER in the rest of the world, Pilsner is generl term used to refer to ple lgers. In the Czech Republic, Pilsner is reserved for Pilsner Urquell. PORTER legl term for drk beers mde from brley with wort contining t lest 18% extrcted sugrs before fermenttion. ŘEZANÉ PIVO Hlf nd Hlf beer/ Blck nd Tn, legl term for mix of ple nd drk beers, generlly produced by tpping two types of beer into the sme glss. Techniclly not the sme s Polotmvé pivo, though the two re often confused. RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT type of strong, drk, very bitter, top-fermented beer, usully over 9% lcohol. STOUT type of bitter, top-fermented blck beer common in Irelnd nd Englnd. SVĚTLÉ PIVO ple beer, legl term for golden brews mde primrily with ple mlt. TMAVÉ PIVO drk beer, legl term for drk brews in generl. VÝČEPNÍ PIVO tproom beer, legl term for the ctegory of bsic beers, mde from wort with 7 10% extrcted sugrs before fermenttion. These re often light, esy drinkers or session beers, designed for mss consumption. WEISSBIER, WEIZENBIER originlly from Bvri, group of top-fermented white or whet beers, including beers where whet mlt ws dded. As the nme suggests, they re light-coloured nd of refreshing flvour. 13 Breweries & Brewpubs 11 Breweries & Brewpubs Klšterní pivovr Strhov ( The Strhov Monstic Brewery ) Strhovské ndvoří 10, Prgue 1 Hrdčny Mon Sun 10m 10pm Not fr from Prgue Cstle, the Strhov Monstery complex houses historicl brewery which offers its own beer clled Sv. Norbert long with excellent Czech cuisine. The history of the Royl cnonicte brewery of the Premonstrtes in Strhov is intertwined with the history of the monstery itself, founded in The first written record dtes from 1400, when the brewery ws rented out for four times threescore groschen, pound of pepper nd one fttened hre per yer. The brewery ws renewed only in The first btch of beer ws brewed in June of the sme yer, on the fest of St Norbert, the ptron sint of the Premonstrtensin monstery. Presently, the Strhov Monstic Brewery includes three locls beerhll with its own copper brew-kettles nd the two storey Sv. Norbert resturnt. The microbrewery itself, unique in its use of medievl technologies, brews unfiltered beers mde from purely nturl ingredients, fermenting in wooden brrels. The specil XBEER 33 drk lger is the strongest beer mde in the Czech Republic in terms of its ABV (lcohol by volume).
