BASIC FACTS New Zealand consists of 2 big islands. The North Island and the South Island. The population of New Zealand is quite small about 4.3 million people. MAORI HAKA DANCE It is a traditional dance. Maori men used to perform the dance before going into battle. It includes heavy stomping, loud chanting and aggressive body movements. Today, it is performed before a rugby game, which is considered to be a national sport of New Zealand.

POLITICAL SYSTEM New Zealand is a part of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Queen Elizabeth II is the official head of New Zealand. The Queen is represented by the Governor General. However, New Zealand has its own government and prime minister.
CITIES The capital of New Zealand is Wellington (400,000 people). The largest and the most cosmopolitan city is Auckland (1.4 million people). Both cities are located on the North Island. Other important cities are Christchurch (390,000 people, the largest city on the South Island) and Dunedin.
SCENERY New Zealand is famous for its spectacular scenery. There are spectacular snow-capped mountains. The highest mountain is Mt. Cook on the South Island (3,754 m). There are 18 peaks higher than 3,000 m.

SCENERY The North Island is less mountainous but there are a number of volcanos. The highly active Taupo volcanic zone has formed a large volcanic plateau. There is also the country s largest lake, Lake Taupo. There are a number of fjords (Fiordland National Park).

SCENERY One of the country s top attractions is its glaciers, e.g. Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers. Visitors can hike them up or even fly over in a helicopter. Rotorua is a city in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. Rotorua is a major destination for tourists. The city is known for its geothermal activity, geysers, and steaming hot mud pools.

FAUNA There are sheep everywhere in New Zealand. There are 9 sheep for every person! The kiwi, a nocturnal bird, is a national symbol. It is a flightless bird. Some animals, like an ostrich-like bird moa, became extinct. Industry is closely connected with agriculture. New Zealand is the second largest exporter of wool in the world..
SPORT AND CULTURE Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (20 July 1919-11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was made in New Zealand by Peter Jackson.
