The specim en contains seven apothecia 5 12 m m diam., at the bases w ith rem nants of yellow ish loam y soil. According to the V elenovský s m anuscript, the P iláťs collection w as m ade on a m oist w all in a chalet in the High T atra m ountains (Vysoké T atry, Slovakia), about 1600 m a. s. 1.. Ascospores 12 13 X 6.5 7.5 um, som ew hat blu n tly ellipsoidal, usually containing two oil globules, thin-w alled, hyaline, densely finely w arted, the w arts 0.2 0.5 diam., 0.2 0.3 um high, rounded or irregularly angulate, singly, in optical section m ostly clearly visible, b u t som etim es h ard ly distinct. The studied m aterial corresponds w ith Peziza adae S ad ler ap. Cooke (1877) = Peziza domiciliaria Cooke (1877) and does not d iffer from its typical form. The occurrence on m oist w alls of houses seems to be specific of this violet coloured sm all-spored species. Plicaria adusta V elen., M on. D iscom. They are m ature, w ith a plenty of ascospores outside th e asci, too. Asci 9 10 (um diam., 8-spored, cylindrical, apex tu rn in g blue in M elzer s reagent. Paraphyses usually enlarged above, apex irreg u larly clavate, m ostly curved, 3 6 /um diam. and filled w ith conspicuous oleaginous yellow -brow n contents. Ascospores 13 14 X 7 8 um, ellipsoidal, at the ends rounded or som ew hat attenuated, w ithout oil globules, hyaline, thin-w alled, perfectly sm ooth (also in cotton-blue and under oil-im m ersion, 1500X, no ornam ents are visible). The type specim en consists of tw o apothecia 4 6 m m diam., brow nish coloured. Asci 200 250 X 10 15 ^m, cylindrical, 8-spored, w all blued in M elzer s reagent. Ascospores 13 16.5 X 9 10 um, largely ellipsoidal, biguttulate, reg u larly and densely very m inutely rough w alled; w arts very small, 0.1 0.3 um diam., rounded, num erous, singly, hardly or not visible in optical section. According to the collector s m anuscript, the apothecia w ere fresh 5 8 m m diam., brow n w ith a fain t violaceous tint, th e outer part of the excipulum m ilk grey w hitish. On bare sandy ground in a hollow w ay in a wood. consider this species identical w ith Peziza labessiana (Boud.). t is very closely related to Peziza adae Sadler ap. Cooke, different from it by larger ascospores and very m inute w arts. P licaria com bustoru m V elen., M on. D iscom. B oh. p. 351, 1934 PRM 151872 (holotypus): Vyžlovka prope Jevany, in carbonario, 6. X. 1928, leg. et det. Velenovský. The type m aterial consists of some very sm all brow nish fragm ents of a single apothecium. Asci 230 300 X 18 21 um, cylindrical, 8-spored, apex turning deep blue in M elzer s reagent. Paraphyses badly distinct, collapsed, 5 6 tum diam., apex subclavate, straight, hyaline. Ascospores 20.5 24 X 12 13.5 um, broadly and obtusely ellipsoidal, w ithout oil globules, contents yellowish up to light brow nish and refractive, slightly thick-w alled (0.5 0.8 um); the wall sm ooth, only few ascospores observed by m e w ere densely covered w ith in distinct m inute dots. M edullary excipulum of subglobose large cells 70 90 fum diam., interspersed by long cylindrical hyphae. M orphologically, cannot find any difference betw een Plicaria com bustorum and Peziza vesiculosa Bull, ex St.-A m ans, both species seem to be different only ecologically. The very fragile, pale brow nish apothecium, at first hem i- sphaerical, then perm anently cup-shaped w ith irregularly incised m argin, is quite sim ilar to th e typical coprophilous Peziza vesiculosa. M any years before found an identical form on b u rn t ground near Prague (Radotin, 1st N ovem ber 1945) and J. K ubická in S outhern Bohem ia (Smržov, n ear the D vořiště pond, 5th N ovem ber 1960). The collection of V. Vacek (PRM 151831, Říčany, on burn t ground, Ju n e 1940), determ ined by Velenovský, is th e sam e species. P licaria d isciform is V elen., M on. D iscom. B oh. p. 350, 1934 PRM 152828 (lectotypus): M irošovice prope Mnichovice, in ripa arenosa ad rivulum, 9. V. 1928, leg. et det. Velenovský. The specim en consists of a single apothecium, 7 m m diam., alm ost black, irregularly undulate, shallow ly concave, broadly sessile on sandy ground, the outer surface sm ooth or nearly so. Ascospores 18.5 20 X 9.5 10 um (excl. the ornam ents), coarsely w arted, w arts up to 1.3 um high, convex, irregularly rounded -angulate or elongated and curvate (up to 2 um long), clearly visible in optical section; a t th e ends of ascospores th ere are often one or tw o larger, usually obtusely conical w arts. cannot find any difference betw een this and Peziza depressa Pers. ex Fr. (sensu Boud.). T he sam e species is Plicaria obscura Velen. 1934, too. P licaria discolor V elen., Ces. The second specimen, PRM 614799 (Chuchle prope Pragam, V., leg. O. Reisner) was originally m ixed together w ith apothecia of Peziza badia, Collected in the sam e locality. The ascospores are q u ite sim ilarly ornam ented as described above. Plicaria discolor does not differ from Peziza badiofusca K orf, but it cannot be accepted because it is preoccupied by Peziza discolor Hedwig ex Fr. (Syst. mycol. 2 : 134, 1822). Two rem aining specimens (PRM 147716, 152853) have ascospores perfectly sm ooth, only 13 14.5 X 7.5 8.5 jum, paraphyses strongly enlarged above and yellow brow n colored. They are identical w ith Plicaria adusta Velen. [ = Peziza lobulata (Velen.) S vr.]. Hence the variety autum nalis m ust be regarded as a nom en m ix tu m, the description of it is based on tw o d ifferent species. P licaria echinospora v a r. carpatica V elen., M on. D isc. Ascospores 11 13.5 ( 14) X 5 5.5( 6) um, narrow ly cylindric ellipsoidal, slightly thick-w alled, clearly w arted (also in optical section), w ith tw o large oil globules, w arts 0.2 0.7 /um high, at the ends of the spores one or tw o som ew hat larger ones, 0.2 2 um diam., irregular, often elongated and in th e form of short sinuate broken ridges. A lthough Velenovský did not m ark this collection of P ilát as var. carpatica, it is evidently th e ty p e m ateria l of it because it is th e only specim en from C arpathian in his herbarium and studied by him. This v ariety perfectly agrees w ith Peziza petersii Berk, et Curt. The collection from D enm ark (PRM 672038) has also paraphyses enlarged above (4 5 um), usually curved and totally filled w ith strongly cyanophilous granules observed by m e in ty p e m ate ria l of var. carpatica. This characteristic species seems to be close to Peziza thozetii Berk., P. apiculata Cooke and P. vagneri J. M oravec. The first one has ascospores distinctly apiculate at each end w ith a truncated conical apiculus up to 3 ^m high and 5 um wide, the second one has a long and pointed apiculus. P. vagneri differs by the color of apothecia (violaceous brow nish up to blackish violaceous) and m ore ellipsoidal, broader ascospores. Plicaria paludicola (Boud.) Velen, sensu Velen. (1934 : 349) appears to be different from B oudier s species and cannot find any difference betw een this and var. clavata Velen. Ascospores 17 18 X 10 um ellipsoidal, w ith one rarely tw o large oil drops, distinctly w arted ; w arts visible in optical section too, rounded or conical, som etim es pointed, up to 0.5 long, on the face of ascospores rath er scarce, elongated (up to 3 m), sinuate and often branched (f. e. Y-form ed). This is th e typical Peziza brunneoatra Desm. (see Dennis, 1968 : 23, pi. G). Also the m acroscopical features recorded by Velenovský in his m anuscript agree well w ith this rare species. t was collected on very m oist clayey ground near a w ater source. Apothecia, w hen fresh, w ere 1 1.5 cm diam., soon discoid, regularly orbicular, conspicuously thickly fleshy w ith an even thick m argin, disc blackish brow n, ou ter surface pale, smooth. Paraphyses 2 3 ^ thick, enlarged a t th eir apices up to 5 um. clavate, straight, septate. Ascospores 13 15 X 6.5 7 (j.m, ellipsoidal or oblong ellipsoidal, atten u ated tow ards the ends, or blunt, hyaline, in Cotton Blue and under oil im m ersion very finely ornam ented w ith m inute w arts 0.1 0.3 jxm diam., or very short lines elongated longitudinally or also transversally, straight or undulate but m ostly not branched. Ascospores are, in optical section, sm ooth or m erely punctate, the ornam en tatio n is relatively dense; th e w all som ew hat thick (0.5 0.8 ^m). t is a curious species characterized by its small, finely ornam ented ascospores as w ell as by stip itate apothecia and by the occurrence on excrements. According to the collector, apothecia w ere 8 12 m m diam., fragile, pellucid, deeply concave, often of an irregular form or split dow n one side, outer surface pale and finely m ealy, disc greyish-olivaceous. One apothecium 18 m m diam., w ith an atten u ated base sessile on loam ed soil, dish-shaped, m argin inrolled, disc and outer surface dull brow nish, flesh yellowish. Asci 240 250 X 13 ^m, 8-spored. Ascospores 15 18 X 8 10 um, oblong ellipsoidal, obtuse, distinctly coarsely w arted, w arts up to 0.8 /um high, m ostly in the form irregular sinuate and undulate som etim es branched ridges; tw o large oil drops present. There is no doubt about the id entity of this species w ith Peziza m ichelii (Boud.) D ennis (syn.: Galactinia plebeia Le Gal), a very variable fungus, particularly in color. H um aria violascens Velen., recorded by its au th o r as a synonym um (1934 : 347) is quite a different discom ycete (viz. Peziza depressa Pers. ex Fr. sensu Boud., identified on the basis of its holotypus). 140

This species characterized by its violaceous color as well as alm ost cylindrical w arted ascospores, and by ecological relations, w as collected in Bohemia and M oravia repeatedly. t occurs alw ays on dead wood of willow, rarely on other frondose trees, or on w et soil under shrubs of willows. t is probably close to Peziza emileia Cooke (syn.: P. howsei Boud.), but hardly identical the last nam ed species is a large one, w ith apothecia 5 10 cm diam., and w ith a different color. Since th e nam e salicina is preoccupied in the genus Peziza, it m ust be changed: Peziza saliciphila nom. nov. (syn.: Plicaria salicina Velenovský, Mon. Disc.
