Guy Fawkes Day
GUY FAWKES DAY It is also called Bonfire Night Every year on November 5 people in Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes Day (Bonfire Night). People build big fires outside (called bonfires) with dead leaves and old pieces of wood they do not like. They are also firework displays all around the country.
GUY FAWKES DAY People sometimes bake potatoes in the fire and drink soup while they watch the fireworks. They make a dummy (called a guy ) with old clothes and newspaper, and burn him on the fire. Children sometimes carry the guy around the streets to show people.
GUY FAWKES DUMMY [1]
GUY FAWKES DAY Children say: Penny for the guy. They ask people for money for fireworks. Some people have a bonfire with fireworks in their gardens. However, fireworks are expensive, so people get money together to have one big party in a park or a field.
GUY FAWKES DAY It is usually very cold in November, so people have hot food (soup) and drinks to keep warm. In the past, Guy Fawkes Day was an occasion on which people celebrated the fact that Guy Fawkes did not kill the king. Nowadays, it is just a festival where family and friends come together to watch a firework display.
GUY FAWKES DAY - SPARKLERS [2]
GUNPOWDER PLOT In 1605, the King of England was James I. He was a Protestant. Many people did not like him because they were Catholics and wanted a Catholic king. A Catholic called Guy Fawkes, and his friends, planned a plot to kill the king James and his government while opening the Parliament on 5 November 1605.
GUNPOWDER PLOT They put 36 boxes of gunpowder in the rooms underneath the Houses of Parliament. However, the plan did not work as one of the Guy s friend sent a note to someone about the plan. At about modnight on 4 November, the King s soldiers found Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder. They sent him to prison.
GUNPOWDER PLOT He was tortured as he did not want to give names of the other plotters. Finally, Guy Fawkes gave the names of the other plotters. They were caught and sentenced to death. In January 1606, when people heard the news that the plotters were dead, they made many fires in the street to celebrate that the King James I was alive and well.
GUY FAWKES DAY TODAY Many people campaign against the fact that children can buy fireworks. The can get injured as a result of fireworks. But they also cause a lot of noise. Animals are frightened and sometimes even get injured.
QUESTIONS: Who was Guy Fawkes? When is Guy Fawkes day celebrated? What are Guy Fawkes day traditions? What was Gunpowder plot? Do you think children shoul be allowed to buy fireworks?
