21st Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival 24 th 29 th October 2017 FINAL REPORT 2017 Ji.hlava IDFF is a celebration of creative documentary cinema and the largest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe.

STRUCTURE OF THE FINAL REPORT 1. BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE FESTIVAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE FESTIVAL PARTNERS OF 21st JI.HLAVA IDFF 2. FINAL PRESS RELEASE STATISTICAL DATA JI.HLAVA IDFF 2016 WINNING FILMS AND OTHER FESTIVAL AWARDS GUESTS PROGRAMME SECTIONS INDUSTRY SECTION DOC ALLIANCE FILMS 3. MEDIA COVERAGE 4. FESTIVAL TEAM The Jihlava festival has chosen the funnel as its main symbol. Besides its common use, the funnel can become a tool for listening to the world or looking at it. No matter which end we put to the eye, we will always see the same world, however, we will see it differently. Thus the funnel becomes a metaphorical means of perception and new thinking. The aim of the organizers is to make the festival work the same way. This is also proved by the festival s central motto: THINKING THROUGH FILM!

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FESTIVAL Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival is a unique and prestigious event as well as the largest festival of creative documentary film in Central and Eastern Europe. It showcases documentary films with socially significant themes, an innovative style and visual form, deepening their reflection and confronting them with each other. The Jihlava festival is characteristic of an intense atmosphere, inspiring discussions with the filmmakers and full screening halls. The festival is unique for its careful programme selection, following the essential tendencies in world documentary film in the manner of traditional international festivals. However, at the same time, Jihlava IDFF differs from them in its selection criteria, emphasizing creative documentaries. Every October, Jihlava hosts representatives of leading film festivals and televisions, big and small producers and distributors, film journalists, publishers, critics and of course filmmakers and visitors! The festival creates a natural space for education, addressing a wide range of audiences. Its creative as well as working yet always playful atmosphere is supported by discussions with the filmmakers following the screenings, an exceptional festival catalogue, seminars, unique activities for film professionals, authors readings, site-specific music performances and exhibitions and presentations of works of art referring to reality. In 2017, the Jihlava festival also hosted the 14th edition of the East Silver market for documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe. Each year, the market offers 400 latest documentary films from Eastern Europe, traditionally meeting a great response of international and Czech film professionals; representatives of television stations, film festivals, directors, producers and journalists. Since 2003, the festival has systematically focused on publishing activities. The festival s oldest publication is dok. revue, a supplement originally published as an insert in Literární noviny, and subsequently as a bi-monthly included as part of the Respekt weekly. Today, it is published as a special supplement of this weekly, on the top of which, during the festival, updates about the current events could be found online at Even in its online version, Dok.revue has retained its main sections: Interview, Essay, New Films, or the dialogue-based Situational Reviews and a regular blog issued every Thursday. Dok.revue s brand new sections include video dok.revue that will feature recordings of noteworthy lectures and discussions not only with filmmakers. In 2017, almost 4,500 visitors, journalists and guests have been accredited at the festival. The festival addresses primarily high school and university students who come to Jihlava both from the Czech Republic and abroad. The festival s Industry Programme is traditionally focused on the support of documentary film, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe. This year s Industry Programme was attended by over 1,100 film professionals; directors, film and television producers, buyers from key European and American television stations, representatives of Czech and international film festivals and funds, distributors, sales agents and other guests. This year saw the sixth edition of the Emerging Producers project, showcasing eighteen talented European producers. Extensive media attention was paid to the 7th edition of Inspiration Forum, a platform for discovering and sharing new topics in documentary films, interconnecting filmmakers and festival audiences with inspiring personalities from the social world, the area of performative arts, media and philosophy. The festival also hosted the 8th edition of the Festival Identity workshop; a working meeting of representatives of international film festivals, accompanied by the competition exhibition of festival posters from 2016 to

2. FINAL PRESS RELEASE Jihlava, October 29, st Ji.hlava IDFF is now over accredited visitors arrived to enjoy the festival The 21st edition of the annual Ji.hlava IDFF closed its doors. The festival s overall attendance, just like in the previous year, reached nearly four and a half thousand accredited visitors. The Ji.hlava IDFF showcased over three hundred films at eight screening venues, hosted more than a thousand film professionals and organised almost one hundred and fifty discussions and Q&As. Starting tomorrow, the Czech public can attend Czech Joy in Czech Cinemas, a project bringing the cream of the crop of Ji.hlava IDFF s competition sections to cinemas all over the country. I am happy to see the growing interest of filmmakers and the media. However, what might not be clear at the first sight is the respect of international guests who appreciate the balance between the distinctly profiled programme, a large number of foreign and Czech guests and an informal atmosphere. Ji.hlava brings together holders of the most prestigious film awards, such as the Academy Award and Golden Globes, and representatives of festivals in Venice or Rotterdam, contemporary art museums such as MoMA and Centre Pompidou with the audience, filmmakers and students from across the globe. When I was saying goodbye to our guests, some of them were sorry that they had missed the previous editions of the festival and are planning to come back next year, says Ji.hlava IDFF s director Marek Hovorka. Almost four and a half thousand accredited visitors This year s Ji.hlava IDFF hosted 4,386 visitors. Out of 342 screened films, 70 were shown in their world, 12 in their international and 22 in their European premiere. This year, the films competed in 10 sections. Films were shown in 8 screening halls in Jihlava and in Třešť. The programme offered 150 discussions as part of Q&A sessions, the Inspiration Forum and masterclasses, which were led, for example, by composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, Oscar winning director Marcel Ophuls and Romanian producer Ada Solomon. In line with tradition, the audience s most popular section was Czech Joy, especially The Limits of Work by Apolena Rychlíková and Bo Hai, a film about the Vietnamese community in Prague. Ji.hlava buzzing with film professionals Dozens of activities also took place as part of the so-called industry programme for film professionals, attracting over one thousand names from both the Czech Republic and the whole world. Aside from traditional evens such as the educational workshop Emerging Producers, know-how exchange Festival Identity, Conference Fascinations focusing on experimental film distribution, or the Inspiration Forum platform, this year for the first time the Ji.hlava Academy opened its doors. Ji.hlava s ever-growing industry programme each year attracts more and more professionals and outstanding figures. This is also why, over these six days, the festival becomes one of the main hubs of the filmmaking world. We are happy to see its growing international reputation, said Jarmila Outratová, Head of the Industry Programme. Accompanying programme Ji.hlava also treated its visitors to varied accompanying events. The theatre programme was dominated by documentary play NICK and popular improvisation ensemble VOSTO5. The festival offered a show by Nick Cave s favourite Shilpa Ray, Japanese performer Rie Nakajima, London-based artist of Czech origin Tereza Stehlíková and Russian-Czech collective Black Moon O. Performances by Japanese and Turkish artists and music presentations from China and Vietnam demonstrated that Ji.hlava is a great platform for testing how natural it is for inspiration to migrate from one culture to another. We again managed to engage with the space of the town: Slovak audio artist Jonáš Gruska was recording Jihlava s sounds for three days and the resulting composition was presented in a local church, says the festival s music programme composer, Pavel Klusák. 7

WINNING FILMS AND OTHER FESTIVAL AWARDS OPUS BONUM Best World Documentary Film Juror: Laila Pakalnin a Winner: The Wall (Stena, Dmitry Bogolubov, Russia, 2017) Winner: Opera about Poland (Opera o Polsce, Piotr Stasik, Polsko, 2017) Synopsis: A travelogue collage in search of Polish identity in an uncertain world. A carefully composed dream about the unfound unity of nation, old injustices and moments of glory that fade away under the burden of petty thoughts and the fear of non-existent enemies. A selection of period footage, newspaper articles, and bitterly current citations from the internet, mixed with journal entries by the author Andrzej Stasiuk to create a personal reflection of events. The staged portraits of ordinary Poles set to a tension-filled disharmonic operatic soundtrack at first seems like a series of unrelated images and thoughts, but they slowly come together to form a portrait of the soul of the Polish nation. Jury statement: World emergency! Hysterical analysis. Destructive mosaic. Heretic essay. Audio attack. Anti-catharsis. Synopsis: The Stalin Cult is once again gaining in strength in Russia. Every December 21st, the former Communist leader s admirers gather to honor him on Red Square, at the site of his grave in the Kremlin Wall. In this observational documentary, the Russian director introduces the principle of walking heads the majority of the footage consists of long takes showing the faces of the people waiting in line to place flowers and pay homage in front of a bust of Stalin. Accompanied by the sound of shuffling feet, a representative sample of various human types parades in front of our eyes, their faces reflecting almost a sacred reverence for a man who was responsible for the murder of several millions of their fellow citizens. Juror s statement: For using the film language to express the inexpressible. For film. BETWEEN THE SEAS The Best Central and Eastern European Documentary Film Special Mention: People Pebble (Jivko Darakchiev, Perrine Gamot, Velká Británie, France, 2017) Synopsis: Stones form the landscape, they crunch underfoot as we walk, and children use them in their games. In this experimental film by the directing duo of Darakchiev and Gamot, the fascination with one particular object reaches its peak. The associative images, brought together by the lens of a 16mm camera, create a loosely related series of streamof-consciousness ideas: Monumental shots of the cliffs of Dover, stone houses, people walking on a stone beach, and a metronome in the shape of a hammer. Ordinary images accompanied by cacophonous sounds and excerpts from unrelated interviews create new associations among familiar aspects of human existence. Special Mention: Harmonising fragmented landscapes. Experimenting with Textures. Creating a grey marriage between horizon and frame. Jurors: Illia Gladshtein, Nicole Brenez, Robert Kirchhoff, Thomas A Østbye, Tiffany Pritchard 11

CZECH JOY Best Czech Documentary Film Juros: Alice Krajčírová, Andrea Hanáčková, Krištof Kintera, Miroslav Janek, Rozálie Kohoutová, Tomáš Bojar Student jury: Daniel Bauška, Natálie Cábová, Milena Krupičková, Vojtěch Vlk Best Czech Documentary Film 2017 Czech Journal: Limits of Labour (Apolena Rychlíková, Czech Republic, 2017) Special Mention: Everything Has Its Own Time (Viola Ježková, Czech Republic, 2017) Synopsis: Journalist Saša Uhlová spent six months exploring working conditions at the worst-paid jobs in the Czech Republic. She spent several weeks in a hospital washroom, at a poultry plant, behind a cash register and at a waste sorting facility. Her experience formed the basis for a very personal series of reports about people working invisible jobs under shocking conditions, published on the A2larm. cz website. Apolena Rychlíková has turned these articles into a documentary film consisting of scenes shot at Uhlová s home and of video footage taken at her places of work, accompanied by Uhlová s read commentary. Jury statement: The jury values the human investment on the part of Saša Uhlová, who managed to look at the everyday reality of exploited people through honest, focused, and empathic eyes, free of ideological bias. We appreciate Apolena Rychlíková s directing approach, being able to look at Saša Uhlová in the same way. Special Mention: The Last Shift of Tomáš Hisem (Jindřich Andrš, Czech Republic, 2017) Synopsis: I hope that all is okay and that you ll get something out of this, proclaims miner Tomáš Hisem at the start of his shift at Ostrava s Paskov Mine, which he decided to document. Although we don t see his face (the camera that he has smuggled into the mine is attached to his helmet), we hear his distinct local dialect as he inspects the dark and dusty tunnels and claustrophobic underground spaces that we walk and crawl through on all fours. With a sense of immediacy and in his own distinctive manner, he captures a particular place at a particular time one day before the Paskov Mine is closed and 1,300 of his colleagues lose their jobs. Synopsis: Viola Ježková s experimentally conceived film presents real time and cinematic time as something woven into one image. The image layers are often layered over one another, and the audio tracks are intermixed. This very personal documentary is a poetic exploration of memory, consciousness and future expectations as inexorably joined by reality. Filing by before our eyes (before the cinematographic gaze) are scenes from the past and images of everyday life; in the voiceover, inner voices recite fragments of long-ago dialogues between those who have left us but have not left us alone. Jury statement: The jury was impressed by the radical form, suggestive minimalist approach and unique authenticity of The Last Shift of Tomáš Hisem by director Jindřich Andrš. For poetically charged images and her unrestrained use of the filmic language, the jury acknowledged Viola Ježková s film Everything Has its Own Time. A tripping movie, an abstract testimony about one s real life. Student Jury Award: Milda (Pavel Křemen, Czech republic, 2017) Synopsis: As the main representative of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, Milouš Jakeš was the most powerful man in the country. At ninety years old, he still evokes strong reactions in society today. The director joins Jakeš on a look back at his life, from his beginnings at the Baťa Works until his final expulsion from the party. The film is interspersed with period footage of anti-government protests being put down, and the former general secretary is also confronted with former dissidents or their descendants. This documentary portrait shows an almost ascetic old man with firm convictions regarding the rightness of the old order, which suited his austere nature. Jury statement: Our choice stems from the need to point out that also us, those who sit on the student jury and who didn t experience the absurdity of the previous regime, find it important to bring attention to and reflect on the atrocities of the communist era. We would like the film to enter the consciousness of the younger generation as we believe that in their hands lies the chance to change our society and to avoid making the same mistakes. 12

FASCINATIONS Best World Experimental Film Jurors: Zbyněk Baladrán, Petra Baladránová, Matěj Baladrán, Marie Anna Baladránová Best Experimental Documentary Film 2017: Boat People (Sarah Wood, UK, 2016) Synopsis: Delving for a brief moment into an everyday scene, we see various movements at various speeds and experience microstories representing the familiarity of the street. The classical technique of analytical slowing down different parts of the image at different speeds is used to capture an otherwise invisible phenomenon. Jury statement: The jury grants the Special Mention to The End of Time by Milcho Manchovski. Within the framework of several minutes, the film shows a seconds-long moment from everyday reality, thus opening a time window to a multitude of hidden details celebrating life. The jury appreciated mainly the director s straightforward approach and his ability to build up tension in a seemingly timeless atmosphere of a street in Cuba. Microstories revealed through an uneven slow-motion of the images sets off small miracles that escape our perception under the standard speed of the flow of time. FASCINATIONS: EXPRMNTL.CZ Best Czech Documentary Film Synopsis: As essayistic meditation on mass movements of people since the Second World War, including today s mass flight from war, the possibility of death and environmental catastrophe. Images of the natural elements and scenes taken from the films of, among others, Humphrey Jennings or Derek Jarman explore the relationship between the representation of movements and ideas. Jury statement: Following a long and democratic discussion, the jury agreed to award the prize to Boat People, a filmic essay directed by Sarah Wood. The film is a contemplation on the role of migration in the history of humankind. Based on scenes taken from other films and a poetic voice-over, it compiles an account of migration on the backdrop of the history of Great Britain as a maritime power and an unforeseeable movement of human masses. The film appealed to the jury with its combination of a subjective perspective, historical reflection and especially the role of the moving image in depicting tragic events associated with the loss of home. We also acknowledged the focus on hospitality as a human way of relating to others. Special Mention: The End of Time (Milcho Manchevski, Cuba, USA, 2017) Jurors: Zbyněk Baladrán, Petra Baladránová, Matěj Baladrán, Marie Anna Baladránová Best Experimental Documentary Film 2017: Can (Lucie Navrátilová, Czech Republic, 2017) Synopsis: This experimental film collage makes use of documentary, fiction and animated film techniques. The fading traces of childhood are mixed with the folk culture of the Haná region, all of it shot on 16mm film. The filmmaker thus preserves her chosen motifs, which are slowly but irrevocably disappearing from the present day. Jury statement: The jury grants the award to 16mm film collage Can directed by Lucie Navrátilová. The film humorously elaborates on the topic of storing and preserving, with the ambition to conserve the folklore of the Haná region, dying trees, as well as forms of narration that are becoming inadequate and are slowly disappearing. The jury was impressed by the humorous angle and playfulness with which the author approached her topic. We also appreciate her work with the form. It is a collage of several layers of narration, fused into a highly personal testimony about the end of adolescence and the inevitable end of everything that is connected with the intimate exploration of the world. 13

Special Mention: Tradition (Kateřina Turečková, Czech Republic, 2017) Best Documentary Debut Film 2017: Panoptic (Rana Eid, Libanon, SAE, 2017) Synopsis: The town of Kyjov has two traditions: folk culture and methamphetamine. Dressing up in folk costumes is one of the things that the region of Moravian Slovakia is known for, but it is a façade funded from the municipal budget. Then there is the less idyllic reality of daily life, the status of men and women, and drinking at the 24-hour bar or in one s basement. An exacting rhythmic film poem, shot and edited like its subject traditionally, i.e., using analogue film. Special Mention: The Special Mention goes to Kateřina Turečková for her film Tradition. The film originated as a school exercise on a 35mm film, poetically reflecting Moravian-Slovakian folklore traditions in the town of Kyjov and the consumption of crystal meth popular among the local youth. The town s official support reduces itself to Moravian traditions, neglecting social life and leaving young people at the mercy of their fate. The jury appreciates the subtle irony in combining old and new traditions to form a social hybrid as well as the attempt to integrate crystal meth into the film s sensitive layer resembling a smut preventing social reflection. We also value the attempt to integrate crystal meth into the film s sensitive layer resembling a smut preventing social reflection. We believe that the film will catalyse discussion and changes in a town that have allocated funds for its making. FIRST LIGHTS Best Documentary Debut Film Jurors: Augustín Masaedo, Evgeny Gusyatinskiy, Giona A. Nazzaro, Hicham Falah, Josh Siegel Student jurors: Pavel Jan, Barbara Nováková, Varvara Šatunova Best Documentary Debut Film 2017: Meteors (Meteorlar, Gürcan Keltek, Turkey, Netherlands, 2017) Synopsis: Lebanese filmmaker Rana Eid s documentary essay premiered in the Signs of Life section at the Locarno Film Festival, a film in which she captured her journey through Beirut while mourning the death of her father. In an attempt to understand her hometown, she decided to explore its very core its underground. Because that was exactly how she de facto lived in hiding, just as everyone else did during the 17-year-long civil war. The director s personal journey, filled with atmospheric, auditory sensations (she doesn t deny her years of sound work), reflects Lebanon s troubled past, as well as its present and future prospects, on a whole different level. Jury statement: The First Lights jury grants the main award to two films. We wish to make clear that this is a reflection of our collective and equal enthusiasm for both. This is not in any way a compromise born of divided opinion. While differing dramatically from each other in form and tone, these two films speak to the dark times in which we live. Both are complex inquiries into the roots of conflict, in Turkey, in Lebanon, and beyond. Old hatreds are laid bare in the most brutal of ways in wars that seem to have no end. And yet, Gürcan Keltek and Rana Eid serve the honourable cause of the documentarian who bears witness to sufferings that have purposefully been kept hidden from us. The poetry of their difficult images deepens our empathy in regarding the pain of others. Only in doing so can we ever hope to come out of the darkness that hangs over us all. The jury awards the prize of First Lights to Meteors and Panoptic. We do so feeling inspired and hopeful about the future of documentary filmmaking. Student Jury Award: The Making of Justice (Sarah Vanhee, Belgium, 2017) Synopsis: People are transformed from hunters into victims and the city is hit by rockets and meteors on the same day. Through the eyes of actress Ebru Ojen, this strange docufiction captures the historical memory of one Kurdish town in eastern Turkey, which is stricken by armed conflict and where martial law throws daily life into a frozen timelessness. The director s original combination of various cinematic styles with recycled video material joins the film s many fragments into visually and musically interrelated chapters that mix political commentary with a documentary essay about a disappearing world. 14

Synopsis: A consistently out-of-focus visual record tracking seven men as they discuss the screenplay for a film about the life path of Tom, a young murderer who, after twelve years in prison, returns to the village where he lived, and tries to prove to himself and others that he has changed. The camera slides down the walls, snoops between chair legs, and captures useless details of the individual body parts of the participating figures. The schematic story of Tom s guilt, punishment, and new beginning, which the film s director guides her consultants through step by step, gradually gains in plasticity and becomes a surprisingly effective tool for thinking about the image of a criminal and the concept of justice. Student Jury Award: The student jury of the First Lights section grants the award to a filmmaker whose clear vision, self-assured directing style and a profoundly human insight allowed him to defy the conventional portrayal of those who have been sentenced to prison. The stories of the individual characters combined with minimalist filmic language compel us to reflect on the general character of justice. The Award goes to the film called The Making of Justice. SHORT JOY Best Short Documentary Film Jury: online poll Best Short Documentary Film 2017: Interiors & Exteriors (Ashique Mostafa, Bangladesh, 2017) Synopsis: The never-ending war in Syria has destroyed everything. Although Aleppo is in ruins, some of its residents have remained. Candid camera shots record the daily routine of the members of the White Helmets, who try to rescue people trapped beneath the rubble. But for how long can a dead city be kept alive? Translucent being: Marcel Ophuls Marcel Ophuls s documentaries are built primarily around interviews with eyewitnesses and direct participants in the events, combined with archival materials. All four films being shown in Ji.hlava clearly reflect his painstaking research and uncommon ability to earn his subjects trust. Short Joy presents a selection of the best Czech and international documentary shorts consummate works exploring the strength of documentary film within a limited space. Films that think about psychedelic states, and works capable of inducing them. Conference: Fascinations Outstanding experimental films made outside the official art of the regime in the second half of the 20th century in the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Reality TV Reality TV opens viewers eyes to new television formats and presents the full range of current forms of crossover genres such as docudrama, docusoap, reality show, and mockumentary. 24 OFF-SCREEN SELECTION This year again, Jihlava did not live only with films and documentary-related events. The town hosted a variety of authors readings, concerts, theatre performances or exhibitions. Laboratorium The annual off-screen part of the Fascinations festival section will this time revolve around gaps, limits and boundaries of the visible: a plane s landing shown as a mere light composition, a photogenic landscape in the opening sequences of blockbusters, crowds interspersed with individuals rushing across pedestrian crossings, arrangement of photos into seemingly compact geometries of memories, phenomena and expressions beyond the boundaries (of the visibility) of things and an autonomous vision of a camera recording what it is in direct contact with. Game Zone The Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival is dedicated to showing various ways of representing reality: through original documentary features or shorts (both new and old) from around the world, through experimental films, progressive reality TV formats, or hybrid genres such as doc-fi, via audio-visual installations, and since last year in the form of interactive documentary films or web-docs Virtual Reality The Ji.hlava IDFF gives viewers the chance to enter into 360 films and spatial installations. Here, you can find 360 documentary films, VR installations and works on the boundary between film and art that make use of virtual spaces to create autonomous worlds whose own rules are determined by visuality. We are interested in works that take advantage of the characteristics of virtuality in an innovative and contemplative manner, that experiment with the audiovisual representation of reality and real stories, or that build an entertaining and instructive world of knowledge and learning. MUSIC PROGRAMME The Music Off-programme made by curator Pavel Klusák presented also this year a several projects prepared especially for the 21st Jihlava IDFF. AVA Kolektiv: Moving Spaces (CZ) A noise quartet. Field recordings, performed live by four sound artists and musicians from Brno with close ties to Bastl Instruments. A four-channel sound system, sounds of the real world in an improvised interactive performance. A documentary record of place, deconstructed in the name of documentaries and the musician s personal feelings. and educational documentary computer games. The Game Zone, made possible this year thanks to the cooperation with Dell and Intel, features ten stations equipped with the latest technology where visitors can interactively explore the Milky Way or the underwater world, be in the middle of a snowstorm in an Eskimo village or the Iranian Revolution in Tehran, or experience military conflict through the eyes of a civilian. The educational games offer an entertaining opportunity to learn about biology, maths, and history, or to expand economic knowledge and spatial thinking. Learning is not the passive absorption of information. It is the product of an intellectual and creative dialogue with the world, and the Jihlava IDFF offers a chance to engage in such dialogue on the movie screen and through computer monitors. The festival presents a broad range of games that work with references to reality or can be used to learn about scientific fields and disciplines. Black Moon O (Rusko / CZ) A three-hour ambient AV séance. Our path has its roots in the depths of the dark areas of our personality. Their dark radiation creates form from emptiness and gives silence its aural qualities. By being divided into multiple forms, 24

emptiness forgets that it is empty. Sounds respond to one another and even silence forgets that it is not speaking. This ever-changing international ensemble of artists brought together by a shared interest in ambient music, fresh sounds and a love for tea grew out of the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem. Circuit Diagram & Derya Yildirim (Turkey / Germany) A trio that mixes krautrock with Turkish psychedelia. Harsh electronic rhythms and a psychedelic cither combine to create ecstasy. The Czech premiere features rising star Deryi Yildirim, whose second band (Grup Şimşek) has been taking this year s leading European festivals by storm. Děti mezi reprákama (CZ) With the length of his public performances, Dominik Zezula is the Fidel Castro of Czech indie pop. The band s third album Prázdniny is full of stories in which he realistically reflects the experiences of those in the audience. The evening continues with a DJ set by another member of the trio, Ondra Mikula aka Aid Kid. Kink Gong (France) A strong block of music with the shared theme of After Improvisation. Laurent Jeanneau (Kink Gong) spends part of his life in Asia. In his music, he rearranges film and audio recordings of the traditions, rituals and pop music of China, Laos and Vietnam. Pátí na světě (CZ) Pátí na světě represents a return to song after Ivan Palacký s successful improvisation with colleagues from Japan, Austria and Australia. The band s debut album Uniori (Polí5) is a hot tip for one of the best albums of the year. Radio Wave Live Session: Opak Dissu (CZ) An incomprehensible and thus all the more popular hip-hop crew promoting hard partying and Czech pathetic-ness. Asap Jarda, Don Chain, Bluraykoránthug and Young Lvíše in fullblown party mode. The night continues with DJs authorized by this friendly mafia. Rie Nakajima & Pierre Berthet (Japan / Belgium) The experimental stage in the Church of the Holy Spirit opens with one of the highlights of the programme. In a subtle and precise performance, experienced and acclaimed musicians manipulate dozens of resounding objects to create a landscape of sounds, ideas, associations and stories right in front of the viewers eyes. Shilpa Ray (USA) A musical gala fi nale. The Brooklyn blues-punk sextet with goth burlesque elements concludes its Czech tour at our festival. Singer Shilpa Ray has been earning rave reviews for the new album Door Girl, which shows the infl uence of Patti Smith, Nick Cave and Allen Ginsberg s Howl. Jakub Šimanský (CZ) Šimanský and his alternatively tuned guitar delve headfirst into the tradition of grassroots blues artists like John Fahey. Přerov s alternatively tuned punker plays like no one else in the Czech Republic just check out the forceful beauty of his album Face To Face Against American Primitivism In Eastern Europe Vol. 1. Jonáš Gruska (SK) A Lisbon Story, but in Jihlava. The hunter of sounds comes to the city, which he spends several days getting to know and deciphering with his microphone. Maybe he even records himself. In the end, he appears before an audience and creates an instant live mix composition. Slovak audio artist Jonáš Gruska studied in The Hague and Cracow and recently released the album Spevy. Kalle (CZ) The darkness and intimacy of indie rock. Electric guitar and voice a duo capable of staying on stage together and alone. MADE IN SLAVUTYCH A Czech Wedding, Ukrainian-Style is the fi nal part in the three-year project MADE IN SLAVUTYCH, which Kateřina Šedá has been working on since Forty-four residents of Slavutych come to the Czech Repubilc for a week and become the guests at a Czech couple s wedding. The goal of the event is not to be a tour of any Czech town or historical monument, but rather to show that Ukraine has become a member of a family. 25

INDUSTRY SECTION FOR FILM PROFESSIONALS For the sixteenth time in a row, the Jihlava IDFF, has offered its industry programme. Traditional platforms in this section again offered a friendly space for all foreign and Czech film professionals. Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival is a unique and prestigious event as well as the largest festival of creative documentary film in Central and Eastern Europe. Jihlava s industry programme is an ideal place for talented producers to present their work along with other film professionals and increase the potential by creating new, original and successful projects. We are pleased to see the number of delegates from various filmmaking spheres who help intensify the connection between the specifics of eastern and western documentary tradition. This development arouses not only our pride, but reassures us that we are doing things the right way. It encourages us to invest even more time, energy and creativity in the preparation. EMERGING PRODUCERS 2017 Emerging Producers is a promotional and educational project that brings together talented documentary film producers from Europe and, this year exclusively, from Morocco. The workshop s main aim is to interconnect talented European producers with film professionals, especially those working in documentary cinema. The project also provides the participants with an easy access to information in the field of audio-visual production, deeper and broader insight into the film market, and helps them establish contacts with producers from other countries, thus increasing the potential of future European co-production projects. While the project s main part takes place in October during the Ji.hlava IDFF under the guidance of experienced lecturers, Emerging Producers receive year-round support and promotion at major film festivals. Since 2017, following the success of the previous five editions, the programme was extended with an additional four-day meeting in Berlin and producers presentation during Berlinale. 26

We are happy that over 100 producents attended the Emerging Producers programme during the last six years and a lot of them are really successful and are awarded on the festivals all around the world. JI.HLAVA ACADEMY Ji.hlava Academy is an educational, networking and inspiring platform open to experienced talents representing various elements in non-fiction contemporary cinema. Over the course of four days, Ji.hlava Academy offered a creative lab for those dedicated to make, reflect upon or share contemporary films directors, cinematographers, editors, producers and visual artists, but also film and art critics and festival programmers; for those who are observing and broadening limits of visual style, authorial approach or audience perception. The programme consisted of lectures, talks, discussions and screenings and was accessible only for selected participants. Some parts of the programme were open to all participants; some were carefully tailored for each participant or participated film/project. Main lectures in the 2017 were Luciano Barisone, italian film critic and former director of the film festival, Fred Kelemen, Hungarian film and theatre director and former director of the film festival and Anja Salomonowitz, Austrian film director and screenwriter. INSPIRATION FORUM The first project of its kind at film festivals and an absolutely unique programme initiating new themes and topics in documentary film, bringing together film professionals and significant and provocative personalities from outside the film world. At present, there are numerous festival and industry activities focused on the development of an existing topic, the search for co-producers and the extension of distribution possibilities. The Inspiration Forum, on the other hand, creates a platform for the search for new themes and their interpretations, preceding the filmmaker s decision as to which subject is to be developed. Lectors of the Inspiration forum 2017 were Polish reporter and writer Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska, Croatian theatre director Oliver Frljić and daughter of the Boris Nemtsov Zhanna Nemtsova. FESTIVAL IDENTITY The unique meeting for representatives of film festivals of various types and programme orientation including special presentation called Festival Hub, powered by PechaKucha. This meeting of film professionals includes a competitive exhibition of festival posters from Two awards are annually presented: the audience award and the award of the jury composed of representatives of film festivals who participate in the Festival Identity meeting. Both awards were won by the Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival CONFERENCE FASCINATIONS The Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival organised a third edition of a conference meeting for experimental documentary film distributors, gallerists and festival representatives. This year s discussion revolved especially around seeking and promoting new talents. VISEGRAD ACCELERATOR Visegrad Accelerator is aimed at interconnecting professionals from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland attending Ji.hlava IDFF The project opens the possibility to establish a creative Visegrad platform initiating and expanding various film activities through meetings of film professionals, critics and film festival representatives from Central European countries. Visegrad Accelerator is a platform for film professionals from Visegrad countries within the Ji.hlava Industry Programme and aims to discover and support new talents from Central Europe, introduce them to the international industry community and thus accelerate their creative growth. It creates a unique environment where V4 filmmakers can get support for their documentary projects (Inspiration Forum), present their producer s vision and develop European co-productions (Emerging Producers), share experience (Festival Identity) and discuss their needs (V4 Panels) all in a relaxed, creative and non-competitive Ji.hlava environment with professionals from around Europe. The project was supported by the International Visegrad Fund. 27

INSTITUTE OF THE DOCUMENTARY FILM ON THE 21st JIHLAVA IDFF The Institute of Documentary Film co-organizes the industry section at the Ji.hlava IDFF. For the ninth time, the Silver Eye Awards were presented in three categories to the best documentary films in the East Silver Market. Film professionals attended the Ex Oriente Film workshop, while audiences enjoyed a unique screening and discussion in a Jihlava church as part of KineDok. EAST SILVER MARKET The Institute of Documentary Film regularly hosts the East Silver Market at the Ji.hlava IDFF to present a selection of the latest documentaries from Central and Eastern Europe. A record number of 700 films were submitted to its 14th edition and festival industry guests, especially festival programmers, had the opportunity to visit its video library and stream a total of 317 films. Best Mid-length Documentary / The international jury decided to award Paper Stars by the Russian filmmaker Inna Omelchenko and explained its choice as follows: The film deals with its subject in a focused yet poetical form and treats its protagonists gently and respectfully. The smooth camera immerses in the life of 13-year old girls and captures this beautiful, yet very fragile and vulnerable coming-of-age process. A reflection on the relation between the individual and the group, the film in the same time witnesses the political dimension of education and traditional summer camping of teenagers. Best Feature Documentary / Out of a slate of outstanding films from Central and Eastern Europe, the jury awarded the Silver Eye Award for Best Feature to the Austrian documentary Sand and Blood. During the festival closing ceremony, the award was presented to director Matthias Krepp and producer Leni Gruber. Members of this year s jury made up of festival representatives commented on the winner: The film presents a story about Iraqi and Syrian war conflicts and its refugees by using self-shot images and home videos, and it finds a brave conceptual solution to the necessary anonymity of the characters that holds the viewers attention from the beginning to the end. It is a heart-wrenching, raw and tough film, but highly necessary to understand the complexity of humankind when put under extreme conflict and confrontation. Attesting to its quality, Sand and Blood is in this year s line-up of the prestigious IDFA Competition for Student Documentary. Silver Eye nominees included Opera about Poland (dir. Piotr Stasik), this year s winner of the Between the Seas festival competition. Along with two other documentaries The Road Movie (dir. Dmitrii Kalashnikov) and The Wall (dir. Dmitry Bogolubov) Stasik s film was among the top most-viewed films in the East Silver Market. SILVER EYE AWARDS 2017 Thanks to the support from MEDIA/Creative Europe, Silver Eye Awards were presented with the goal of helping films to improve promotion, secure a distributor or a screening at international festivals and in TV networks. The awards, along with EUR 1500 and year-long festival support in the East Silver Caravan, went to the best films in three categories Best Short, Mid-length and Feature. In the short category, the award was presented to the Polish film Dust by Jakub Radej. The Russian filmmaker Inna Omelchenko received won in the mid-length category for her film Paper Stars and the Austrian documentary Sand and Blood by Matthias Krepp was announced the winner in the feature category. Figures show that East Silver is in high demand among festival guests. This year we had 1450 views of the films in our selection. The visitors of the video library included mostly festival programmers, distributors, sales agents, TV representatives as well as producers and filmmakers, adds Zdeněk Blaha, East Silver Market Manager. The selection also included more than 180 festival films. The most popular were Milda (dir. Pavel Křemen) and Skokan (dir. Petr Václav), both from the Czech Republic, and In Praise of Nothing (dir. Boris Mitić; Serbia, Croatia, France). Best Short Documentary / In this category, the jury awarded the Polish film Dust by Jakub Radej that follows the path of a human body from death to burial. The jury commented on the film: While there was a fine selection of films in the competition, Dust stood out as a careful and considered documentary. We admired Dust for its detachment of emotion, its conceptual approach to the subject of death, and for its beautiful cinematography and polished editing. 28

EX ORIENTE FILM Over the course of 6 days, 15 renowned tutors helped filmmakers and producers to develop and secure funding for their projects. The Ex Oriente Film was attended by leading film professionals who offered festival visitors an array of talks and debates. In two of the most captivating masterclasses, the Austrian filmmaker Andreas Horvath presented his latest controversial documentary Helmut Berger, Actor and the young Russian filmmaker Dmitrii Kalashnikov with his feature documentary The Road Movie, compiled of found dashcam footage shot by Russians. KINEDOK KineDok is a unique project focused on alternative distribution of creative documentaries and screenings at unconventional venues. In Jihlava, KineDok visited the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross to screen the Croatian film Tourism! followed by the discussion with the director Tonći Gaćina about the relationship of Croats to tourists. Throughout the year, KineDok is active in eight European countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Poland, Norway and Bulgaria). Representatives from each country met at Ji.hlava IDFF and after the evaluation of this year s collaboration, they discussed a strategy for One of the main items on our agenda was the selection of documentary films for the upcoming year. Each partner presented the best 6 new films from their region and then, we will carefully choose the catalogue for This year s preselection consists of exceptionally high-quality documentaries. I can t wait to offer our audience the final selection that will be ready for the year-round launch at the beginning of the next year, says Kristýna Genttnerová, KineDok Coordinator. One of the workshop s participant Hana Šilarová (Frame Films) sums up the potential of the event: The Ex Oriente Film workshop has been beneficial for our project Never Happened (Skutok sa nestal) directed by Barbora Bereznaková on multiple levels. It gives us the opportunity to fully focus on our film for 3 weeks and get valuable feedback and advice from experienced film professionals. Moreover, sharing our ideas with other filmmakers at such an early, fragile stage, has been even more meaningful. The pinnacle will be a central pitch featuring all 12 participating projects and an additional 9 projects, that takes place at the international event East Doc Forum (March 3 9, 2018). The East Doc Forum raises the visibility of these projects and allows the filmmakers and producers to establish important contacts with other professionals. One-on-one meetings are an important part of the event and these can be requested by guests interested in a specific project. Filmmakers also participate in round-table sessions and get feedback from guests they might not otherwise meet. The Forum provides a unique platform to test out the international response and potential of the attending projects, says Tereza Šimíková, East Doc Platform Manager. 29
