Moravian-Slovakian Verbuňk This men's dance was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 2005. Verbuňk is an improvised dance performed by men or boys in folk costumes accompanied by a cimbalo or brass band. The name of the dance comes from a German word werbung (recruitment) which reflects its historical origins in the recruitment of dancers and soldiers for the military in the eighteenth century.
The Ride of Kings The Ride of the Kings from Moravian Slovakia is an old and traditional folk celebration. It takes place the last weekend of May in several villages and towns in Moravian Slovakia and Haná. Only in Vlčnov it is held every year. The origin of the parade is still unknown. According to the most famous legend, the Hungarian king Matthew Corvin was fleeing from the Czech king George of Poděbrady. In order to not be recognised and captured, he dressed himself in women s clothing, covered his face with ribbons, and put a rose in his mouth so that he would not reveal himself by his voice.
The Ride of Kings The ride of the Kings consists of legrut boys in costumes on horses, who accompany the kinga young boy holding a rose in his mouth. The King and pageboys are wearing women s ceremonial costumes, while the legrut boys are dressed as men. The Ride of the Kings was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 2011.
Shrovetide processions The Shrovetide processions and masks (called masopust in the CR) take place in the town of Hlinsko and six nearby villages in the Hlinecko area of Eastern Bohemia in the Czech Republic. This tradition is common in many places in the Czech Republic but only in the Hlinecko area has it been preserved and not changed through the centuries.
Shrovetide processions This popular custom takes place at the end of winter during Shrovetide the period just before the Christian Lent. The Spotted Man and Wife, two masked figures, lead the parade. Men and boys disguised in masks go from door to door around the village. They wish each household prosperity and health and play songs. The parade ends with the ceremony of the killing of the Mare (a mask), which is a myth connected with the arrival of spring. The Shrovetide processions were inscribed on the UNESCO List in 2010.
Falconry Falconry is a special way of hunting with the help of birds of prey. The history of falconry in the area of the Czech Republic dates back hundreds of years. Nowadays we can see demonstrations of falconry in the courtyards of Bohemian and Moravian castles and chateaux where we can witness the special bond between these beautiful birds and their owners. Falconry was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 2010.
