Letohrad Wenceslas Square in Letohrad [obr.1]
Location: Letohrad is a town in the Ústí nad Orlicí district, in the Pardubice region in Eastern Bohemia. It lies at the foot of the Orlické Mountains at the cofluence of the rivers Tichá Orlice and Lukavický Potok. It is located 7 km southeast from Žamberk. In the past the town was called Kyšperk and it was renamed to Letohrad in 1950. An old castle called Kyšperk used to stand here but there are only a small remains of it nowadays.
Some history facts: The oldest record about the Kyšperk castle is from 1308 but the town is mentioned only in 1513. During the years 1680-5 the Kyšperk Chateau and also Saint Wenceslas Curch were built. With the first train in Kyšperk in 1847 we can talk about slow industrialization of the town, mainly wooden and textile industries. Nowadays the electrical engineering industry prevails and also the production of construction material is worth mentioning.
Some important sights: The Letohrad Chateau was build at the instigation of H.J. Vitanovský from Vlčkovice. In the area of the chateau we cand find a marvellous park with some unique and rare plants, e.g. Kandík psí zub. Vitanovský also founded a baroque Church of St. Wenceslas which is beautifully decorated with fabulous plasters (stucco) by the Italian master Giovanni Maderna. There is an interesting Museum of Jára Cimrman in the area of the chateau where you can get to know a lot of information about this czech genius.
