Úvod Výukový materiál je primárně určen pro žáky 3. a 4. ročníků čtyřletých oborů zakončených maturitní zkouškou (39-41-L/01 Autotronik, 33-42-M/01 Nábytkářská a dřevařská výroba, 23-45-M/01 Dopravní prostředky, 36-45-M/01 Technická zařízení budov, 39-41-L/002 Mechanik instalatérských a elektrotechnických zařízení budov) a 2. ročníků nástavbového studia (23-43-L/51 Provozní technika, 64-41-L/51 Podnikání), ale lze jej využít i při výuce nadanějších žáků v nižších ročnících uvedených oborů. V rámci seznámení se s problematikou reálií a života v anglicky mluvících zemí je výukový materiál vhodné použít jako podpůrný a doplňkový studijní materiál v předmětu Anglický jazyk. Jednotlivá témata korespondují s tématickými plány vypracovanými v souladu s ŠVP pro dané obory a vycházejí z požadavků RVP. Jazyková úroveň výukového materiálu je v souladu s požadavky úrovně Intermadiate - B1 (středně pokročilý) Společného evropského referenčního rámce pro jazyky. Výukový materiál se zabývá největšími kanadskými městy. Vzdělávací materiál zahrnuje souvislý text, jenž je souhrnným představením daného tématu. Součástí kapitoly je rovněž kontrolní cvičení a otevřený úkol. 1

1.1 Ottawa Ottawa is the national capital of Canada. This picturesque and safe city is the fourth largest city in Canada. Ottawa is cosmopolitan, with museums, galleries, performing arts and festivals, but still has the feel of a small town and is eminently affordable. English and French are the main languages spoken in Ottawa. You will also hear many other languages, as Ottawa is a diverse, multicultural city, and about 25 percent of its residents are from other countries. With 150 km (93 miles) of recreational paths, the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink in the winter, 850 parks, and access to three major waterways, Ottawa is a joy for outdoor enthusiasts. As well as being home to the Government of Canada, Ottawa is a hightechnology centre, and boasts more engineers, scientists and PhD graduates than any other city in Canada. 1.2 Toronto 3
Toronto is the capital city of the province of Ontario. It is located in the southern part of the province, on the north shore of Lake Ontario.Toronto is a mutlicultural metropolitan city in Canada. It is home to over 2.7 million people. Toronto is considered the cultural, entertainment and financial capital of Canada. The most famous landmark is the CN Tower. It is located in the heart of Downtown Toronto between the Rogers Centre and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Front Street. Near the top of the tower, a 24 sq. metre glass floor allows visitors to watch the streets under their feet. The CN Tower is the world's tallest tower as well as Canada's most recognizable icon. At a height of 553.33m, the tower is the centre of tourism in Toronto. 1.3 Montreal Montreal is a city in Quebec. It is the largest city in the province, the second-largest in the country (after Toronto) and the fifteenth-largest in North America. The city is located on the Island of Montreal. As of 2011, the city of Montreal had a population of 1,649,519. French is the city's official language and is also the language spoken at home by 56.9% of the population. 56% of the population are able to speak both English and French. Montreal is the second largest primarily French-speaking city in the world after Paris. Montreal is an important centre of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, culture, tourism, film and world affairs. 4
1.4 Quebec It is the capital of Quebec and the province s third largest city. Quebec is the podest city in Canada and contains some of the oldest houses dating from 17th century, churches and streets in North America. The city s old quarters, characterised by narrow winding streets, old stone buildings and historic French-style architecture, are situated beside the St. Lawrence River. 1.5 Task Imagine that you and your friend have won a lot of money.
