Australia is both the largest island and smallest continent. It is a federal state with the official title the Commonwealth of Australia. The head of state is British monarch and her representative is the Governor General. Australia was settled by Aboriginals about 50 000 years ago.they still live there. The first Europeans were the prisoners because the country used to serve as a penal colony.
Australia has various landscapes and climate. In the centre there are a lot of deserts. The best-known landform is Uluru Ayers Rock, which can be found in the central part of the country. In the north there are tropical regions, where the most Aborigines live.
Along the coast of Queensland there is Great Barrier Reef world s largest coral reef. Thanks to the climate and geographical isolation there are unique animal species such as the kangaroo (its name comes from Aboriginal language), the koala bear, the Tasmanian devil or the platypus egg-laying mammal.
In the south there are the most populated areas with large cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne. Also the capital city Canberra is found there - in a special territory called ACT (Australian Capital Territory)
New Zealand NZ lies in the South Pacific about 2 000km southeast of Australia. It consists of two main islands (North and South) where you can find various picturesque landscapes, volcanoes and mountains. NZ s wildlife is unique, with a lot of animal species that cannot be found anywhere else. The best-known are flightless birds such as kiwi, which is the symbol of the country. NZ s inhabitants call themselves kiwis. Indigenous people in NZ are called Maoris and their language is the other official language in NZ (together with English) The capital city Wellington is located in the south of the North Island. One of the famous New Zealanders was sir Edmund Hillary, the first mountaineer who climbed Mount Everest (1953).
