/th scale kit 0 P-Q AIRACOBRA The P- Airacobra was developed by the Bell Aircraft Corporation in Buffalo, New York in the late 0's. The first XP- prototype had its maiden flight on April the th, in Dayton, where it reached a maximum speed of km/h at 0 m, climbing to that height in only minutes. The XP- had a very good flight performance, and specifically, good manoeuvrability thanks its original concept of airframe, with its Alison V-- 0 HP supercharged engine located in its centre of gravity. This engine location also gave the aircraft a long, slim nose well suited for installation of a powerful weapon. The USAF ordered a test series of YP-s on April the th, but before the series was finished the project was significantly changed. Because of supercharger troubles, the original engine was replaced by a less powerful Alison V-- without a supercharger, and just 0 HP. The YP- had an engine-axis Oldsmobile T- cal. mm cannon, two.0calibre (. mm) machine guns and two.0calibre (.mm) machine guns mounted in the nose. The pilot seat got some armour, but the weight was increased to 0kg against 0kg of the prototype. Because of these changes the maximum speed was decreased to 0km/h and climb to 0m now took. minutes. Although the excellent prototype flight performances were decreased, the Air force didn't loose interest and ordered 0production P-Cs. The first 0of these were supplied as standard P-Cs and the remaining 0were finished as P-Ds, with the two.0calibre (.mm) machine guns moved to the wings and two more.0calibre (.mm) machine guns were added to the same location. The USAF received its first P-Ds in February, and the next order for P-D's was placed at this time. The British RAF ordered P-'s in April 0. British Airacobra Mk.I's were produced in P-D standard, but with the engine-axis canon replaced with a British Hispano M 0mm cannon and the wing machine guns were replaced with.mm Browning's. The first Airacobra Mk.I's were received in July, but the RAF was disappointed, when it was found that they were not suitable for service in the European war theatre. In October four Mk.I's were tested by 0 Squadron in the ground attack role over occupied France, Airacobras were withdrawn from service and RAF Airacobra Mk.I's were send to Russia. When the USA came into the war, the USAF confiscated Airacobras from the British order on the production line. They were re-designated P-00, and served in the Pacific. All P-00's have exhaust tubes on each side of the engine, and this was the major difference from the P-D series. The next block of aircraft, also with exhaust tubes, were aircraft of the P-F series, and after them came the P-K series ( aircraft), P-L (0aircraft), P-M (0aircraft) and P-N (0 aircraft). All these four series were very similar, using various engines, propellers and other equipment. The final version was the P-Q with an Allison V-- engine (0 HP), and the main difference was the installation of two.0calibre (. mm) machine guns in under-wing pods instead of the four.0calibre (.mm) wing mounted machine guns in the older series. Most of the 0 Q series aircraft were sent to Russia. Production was ceased in August, after the final Airacobra, number, was finished. The USAF employed Airacobras extensively until August, when they were withdrawn from front line service. The USAF used the largest number of Airacobras, of all types, in February. They served in the Pacific theatre, as well as in North Africa and Italy. In total Airacobras were sent to Russia (actually, but aircraft were lost during transport) where they were very popular for their solid metal airframe and heavy weapons. The French Air Force had Airacobras, and P-'s also served with the Australian RAAF, the Italian AF and the Portuguese AF. After the war a number of Airacobras were employed in civilian service and used for air races. Prototyp XP- absolvoval svùj první let.. v Daytonu, kde dosáhl maximální rychlosti km/h ve výšce 0m. Na tuto výšku vystoupal za pouhých minut. XP- mìl velmi dobré letové vlastnosti, mimo jiné i díky své originální konstrukci, kdy turbokompresorem vybavený motor Alison V-- o výkonu 0 k byl umístìn v tì išti letounu, v trupu za kabinou. Toto umístìní motoru také uvolnilo pøíï pro instalaci silné výzbroje..dubna USAF objednalo zkušební sérii YP-, ale pøed jejím dokonèením byl projekt významnì upraven. Pro potí e s turbokompresorem byl pùvodní motor nahrazen motorem Alison V-- bez turbokompresoru, dávajícím jen 0 k. Mezi bloky válcù byl namontován kanon Oldsmobile T- rá e mm, støílející dutým høídelem vrtule, do pøídì byly instalovány dva kulomety rá e, mm a dva rá e, mm. Pilotovo sedadlo dostalo pancéøování, ale hmotnost vzrostla na 0kg oproti 0kg prototypu. Rychlost poklesla na 0 km/h a výstup na 0m nyní trval, minuty. Pøesto e výkony stroje poklesly, USAF neztratilo zájem a objednalo 0produkèních P- C. Z nich bylo 0dodáno skuteènì jako P-C, zbylých 0pak bylo upraveno na standard verze D, se dvìma kulomety rá e, mm v pøídi a ètyømi kulomety rá e, instalovanými v køídle. USAF dostalo své první P-D v únoru a objednalo daších kusù. Britové objednali v dubnu 0 Airacober. Byly dodány v èervnu. Odpovídaly verzi D upravené podle britských po adavkù. Kanon Oldsmobile byl nahrazen kanonem Hispano M rá e 0mm, a køídelní kulomety byly britské Browning rá e, mm. RAF testovalo ètyøi Airacobry Mk.I v bojových podmínkách u 0.squadrony v øíjnu (kde si je vyzkoušeli i nìkteøí ès.piloti), ale byli zklamáni jejich výkony. Zbylých Airacober Mk.I pak bylo posláno do Ruska a pøedáno sovìtskému letectvu. Po vstupu USA do války, britských Airacober bylo konfiskováno na výrobní lince. Stroje byly oznaèeny P-00 a bojovaly vìtšinou v Pacifiku. Všechny P-00 mìly výfukových trubic na ka dé stranì motoru, co je jejich hlavní rozlišovací znak od P-D.V dodávkách následoval blok letadel verze P-F, také s výfukovými trubicemi, po nìm pak verze P-K (letadel), P-L (0 letadel), P-M (0letadel) a velký blok 0 letadel verze P-N. Všechny ètyøi tyto série si byly velmi podobné, pou ívaly rùzné motory, vrtule a další vybavení. Poslední a nejrozšíøenìjší verzí byla verze P-Q, vybavená motorem Alison V-- o výkonu 0 k. Její nejvìtším vnìjším rozdílem oproti pøedchozím verzím bylo nahrazení ètryø køídelních kulometù dvìma kulomety rá e, mm, instalovaných v gondolkách pod køídly. Vìtšina z 0 P-Q byla dodána do Sovìtského svazu. Produkce byla ukonèena v srpnu po dokonèení poslední,. Airacobry. USAF pou ívalo Airacobry v první linii do srpna, kdy byly sta eny z frontové slu by. Nejvíce Airacober, celkem letadel všech verzí, mìlo USAF ve slu bì v únoru. Slou ily v Pacifiku, v Severní Africe, Itálii i na domácích základnách. Celkem (, ale bylo ztraceno bìhem pøepravy) Airacober bylo dodáno Sovìtskému svazu. V sovìtském letectvu byly Airacobry velmi populární pro jejich robustní konstrukci a silnou výzbroj. Francouzské letecvo mìlo Airacober rùzných verzí, a P- byly v menších poètech pou ívány i letectvy Austrálie, Itálie a Portugalska. Jeden kus se po válce vyskytoval i v Polském letectvu. Po válce byla øada Airacober pou ívána v civilních slu bách, mimo jiné jako závodní stroje. Jednu z nich vlastnil napø. Miro Slovak.
