Přídavná jména (adjektiva) mají většinou tři stupně: 1. Základní tvar (pozitiv) big, tall, noisy, important 2. Druhý stupeň (komparativ) bigger, taller, noisier, more important Druhý stupeň používá k porovnání dvou lidí, míst nebo věcí. 3. Třetí stupeň (superlativ) biggest, tallest, noisiest, most important Třetí stupeň se používá k porovnání tří nebo více lidí, míst nebo věcí.

Některá dvouslabičná přídavná jména je možné stupňovat pomocí přípon er/-est nebo pomocí more/(the) most. Jedná se např. o tyto výrazy: clever 2. stupeň cleverer / more clever 3. stupeň (the) cleverest / (the) most clever common, gentle, handsome, happy, narrow, pleasant, quiet, shallow, simple, stupid, tired.
SROVNÁVÁNÍ As as My sister is as old as you (are). (You are the same age.) He isn t as tall as me / I am. (I m taller than he is / him.)
- pomocí 2. stupně srovnáme 2 osoby, věci apod. You are taller than I am/me. The weather is better now than it was in May. Travelling by bus is cheaper than travelling by train. Českou vazbu čím tím vyjádříme pomocí určitého členu a 2. stupně přídavného jména/příslovce. The cheaper, the better.
- pomocí 3. stupně There are 12 girls in the class. Jane is the youngest. (Třetí stupeň můžeme použít samostatně, pokud je z kontextu jasné, k čemu patří.) Jane is the youngest girl in the class. He is the best actor in Hollywood. This is the tallest person in the world. Thomas is the most reliable of all your friends. This is the best book (that) I have/i ve ever read.
Doplňte vhodný tvar přídavného jména. Apples are healthier than chips. (healthy) Jamie is as old as Charles. (old) Gold is more expensive than silver. (expensive) Lucy is the prettiest girl in the class. (pretty) My brother is better at sports than me. (good) France is farther than Germany. (far) My car is faster than yours. (fast)

His elder/older sister is a doctor, Potřebuji nějaké pohodlnější boty. I need some more comfortable shoes.
