BASIC FACTS Scotland is a part of Great Britain as well as Wales, Northern Ireland, and England. The capital city of Scotland is Edinburgh. Population: 5.3 million people (2012) Area: 78,387 sq km The official language is English but Gaelic is also spoken.

FAMOUS FOR Scotland is famous for beautiful nature. There are a lot of mountains, lakes and rivers. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands (1,343 m) which is the highest mountain in the whole UK. There are beautiful lakes and a lot of islands 787 islands e.g. Skye, Arran, Islay etc.
LOCH NESS The most famous lake is Loch Ness for its creature Nessie. Loch Ness - a fresh water lake - is in the Scottish Highlands. It is 36 kilometres long, on average it is 240 metres deep. Thousands of tourists come to visit the lake and see the monster Nessie.

KILT AND WHISKY Kilt is a Scottish traditional costume. There is a legend the Scottish men don t wear underwear under a kilt. Whisky is Scottish national drink. It is made from water, barley and yeast. The Gaelic name for whisky is water of life.
BAGPIPES AND HAGGIS Bagpipes is a traditional musical instrument. Bagpipes are made of sheep s stomach. Haggis is a Scottish national meal. It s a large, round sausage filled with stuffing. The stuffing is made from sheep s internal organs (liver, kidneys, lungs and heart)
CITIES Edinburgh (470,000 people - 2012) is the capital city is Scotland. However, it is not the largest city in Scotland. Glasgow (590,000 people 2012) is the largest city in Scotland. Other cities include Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Kilmarnock, etc.

FAMOUS SCOTS Scotland has a lot of famous people. Sean Connery is a Hollywood star. He has got the title of Sir. He appeared in first James Bond films in the 60s. William Wallace known as Braveheart is a Scottish national hero. There is a film with Mel Gibson about William Wallace called Braveheart (1995).
FAMOUS SCOTS There are a lot of world famous inventors in Scotland more than in any other country. Alexander Flemming discovered penicilin in 1929. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. John Logie Baird invented the television.
SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS The Scottish Highlands is scenery in the north of Scotland. The Highlands can be described as pure, rugged and dramatic. It is dominated by Ben Nevis, the UK s highest mountain. Fort William is a main town in the Highlands. It is the base for mountain walking.

THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS Fort William is known as the UK s outdoor capital. The activities you can do in the Highlands include mountain walking, hiking, climbing, fly fishing, cycling, mountaim biking, canoeing and kayaking. Loch Ness is just over an hour away.

NATIONAL SYMBOLS The national flag of Scotland, known as the St. Andrew s Cross (or Saltire), dates from the 9th century, and it is the oldest national flag still in use. There are other symbols of Scotland including the thistle (the nation s floral emblem), the textile pattern tartan that often signifies a particular Scottish clan.
