Albatros D.V 8 GERMAN WWI FIGHTER :8 SCALE PLASTIC KIT FIRST, A FEW WORDS In mid-96, the Albatros D.III fighter was developed. It was inspired along the same conceptual lines as the Nieuport. The new type was delivered to fighter units in the fall of 96. As in the Nieuport, a flaw manifested itself in the construction of the lower wing, which under tight maneuvers, would violently twist and even fail. The reason for this was never fully revealed. Restrictions were therefore placed on the use of the aircraft, but even so, the D.III became a successful fighter. In April, 97, the Idflieg requested the manufacture of 0 lightened versions of the Albatros, the D.V. The new variant inherited an unchanged wing from the D.III, with the exception of the linkages controlling the ailerons having been moved to the top wing. That itself was moved 0cm closer to the fuselage, which was aerodynamically refined with an oval cross-section with a curved vertical tail. The spine of the fuselage incorporated a headrest, which was often removed by pilots as this piece tended to limit view. Armament consisted of a pair of LMG 08/ 7.9mm machine guns. Powerplant was a Mercedes D.IIIa, rated at 7kW (70hp). Overall, the D.V. was 0kg lighter than the D.III, but the lower wing problems repeated themselves in the lower wings. Despite this, there were a further 00 pieces of the D.V. ordered, and another 00 in July. After that, production gave way to the modified D.Va. The lower wing was strengthened, and the structure was beefed up between the leading edge of the wing and the interwing struts, while the aileron linkages reverted to that used on the D.III. This, however, failed to solve the problem, and the weight of the aircraft grew to the point where the D.Va exceeded that of the D.III. Satisfactory performance was attained with the installation of the Mercedes D.IIIau, rated at kw (8hp). There were,6albatros D.Va delivered from October, 97. Although the aircraft were not overly popular with pilots, prior to the introduction of the Fokker D.VII in May, 97, the D.V. was the most widely used German fighter. Even as late as April, 98, they formed.% of the fighter force on the front, and many, along with the D.III, soldiered on to the end of the war. The D.Va was the last series built fighter fromalbatros, other types proving unsuccessful, and the firm produced the Fokker D.VII under license. A Ltn. Kurt Monnington, Jasta, 97 In 97, Kurt Monnington was transferred from FA to Jasta. With this unit, he gained no aerial victories. In March, 98, he found himself with Jasta 8, in the so-called Berthold exchange, that saw the transfer of personnel between Jasta and Jasta 8. On May th, he claimed his first kill (S.E.a), and on June th, his second (Bristol Fighter). After that, Jasta 8 was relocated from the northern sector of the front to the Montingen airfield at Metz. Here, Monnington gained five victories over British bombers in combat with the IndependentAir Force. 60 H0 0 H H0 0 6 H9 H ČESKÝ TEXT NALEZNETE NA www..com/info/photos/8 H0 0 H H H H0 0 H9 H0 0 60 WHITE PINK 6 H VIOLET H9 H 60 DARK H0 0 WOOD 9
B Ltn. Walter Böning, Jasta 76b, early 98 By the time that Walter Boning became the first CO of Jasta 76b, he had already six victories to his credit, achieved while attached to Jasta 9. With the new unit, he gained a further eleven kills over British and French aircraft. He gained the last two on May 0th, 98, but the following day would prove fateful. On initiating combat with Camels from No.70 Squadron, RAF, he suffered a minor collision with a colleague, Vzfw. George Markert. Both were able to recover, but having lost focus, were immediately attacked. Markert went down in flames, while Boning was able to land at his own airfield, but did not recover from his injuries. E Ltn. Alois Heldmann, Jasta 0, late 97 Alois (Aloys by some references) Heldmann joined Jasta 0 in June, 97 after usual service with Flieger Abteilungen. His first two, unconfirmed, kills came by May, and his first confirmed on June, 97. His score continually grew so that by the end of the war, still with Jasta 0, he gained fifteen. As such, he became the third most successful pilot of the unit.ahead of him were only Erich Lowenhardt with, and Friedrich Friedrichs with.
