When going to see my doctor I have found certain symptoms of a disease. I usually go to see my doctor when I feel unwell or have common problems such as elevated or high temperature, headaches, sickness, a bad cough, a cold, a sore throat, swollen nodules. I would always go to see my doctor if I suffered from a common infection such as flu, tonsillitis, angina, bronchitis or pneumonia. Diarrhoea, food poisoning, constipation, insomnia or feeling pain in the joins are other reasons for seeing my doctor. 2 When is it OK to treat yourself without going to a doctor? Sometimes if I fell unwell (e.g. I have a cold = I have a temperature, a headache, a sore throat, a cough, we sneeze, I feel sick and weak), I try to cure myself without going to a 1 Chudý, Tomáš, Chudá Jana: Topics for English Conversation, Fragment 1996, str. 53 58, ISBN 80-7200-051-9, 15. 4. 2013
doctor. I usually stay in bed, take pills, keep warm and drink herbal tea with lemon or honey. But I never try to overcome a feverish sickness I do not want to risk because I know the illness can leave very dangerous after-effects. 3 Describe your visit at the doctor s. What happens in the waiting room? If I need to see a doctor / a physician / a general practitioner (GP) and if I don t want to wait in the waiting room for a long time, it is better to make an appointment with the doctor in / during his office hours / surgery time. The nurse calls me into the consulting room, looks for my medical report and wants to see my insurance card and takes my temperature if it is necessary. 4 Describe the situation in the surgery. If I am ready, I am invited into the surgery to see the doctor. The doctor asks me what is wrong with me. Then he/she asks me to strip to the waist and examines my chest, tongue and throat. He wants to know if I have a temperature and where I. He listens to my lungs and heart, I have to take a deep breath or stop breathing and after it open my mouth. Sometimes he checks my blood pressure, finds the pulse, taps on the abdomen, examines the tonsils. If it is necessary, he takes the blood count and throat culture. Then the doctor diagnoses the cause and therapy and prescribes a medicine. He makes a certificate about disability to work for working people. Finally, he gives me instruction how long to stay in bed and when to come for a check-up. 4 What can you buy at the chemist s? After the doctor / GP gives me a prescription, I go to the chemist s where I buy the prescribed medicine. Some medicine prescribed by doctors is free of charge. But mostly patients have to participate in the price of the medicine. At the chemist s, I can buy a lot of different kinds of medicines, it depends on my problems and illness: antibiotics, disinfection, cosmetics, medicinal herbs, vitamins, headache pill, sleeping pills, sickness pills, pain
relievers, bandage, gargle, peroxide, thermometer, ointment, eye drops, sanitary towels, sticking plaster, cotton-wool... nose drops, 5 What do you do to stay healthy? What is your lifestyle like? I try to keep my health by physical training, hardening my body, practicing some sports, jogging, walking. As for me, a healthy life style means that I am active in fresh air, I take a rest and have good sleeping habits. I also try to be happy, optimistic and keep my mind in good order. I also eat wholesome food and try to avoid junk food, alcohol, cigarettes and stress. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I am not a vegetarian, I like meat, but I prefer lean meat such as fish, poultry. I try to avoid, fat meat, smoked meat and sausages. I do not use animal fat and much salt and spices. I limit sugary food and high calorie dishes. I do not usually buy white flour pastries, but I prefer cereals and fibrous food. 6 Have you ever been to hospital? Why? Fortunately, I have never been to hospital. I was in hospital once. It was in 2010. I broke my arm. My parents took me to the surgical department. The surgeon examined me. I was also X-rayed. Later I was operated on the operating theatre. Fortunately, I did not have to pass any tests.
