Why? Mrs. Sowerberry hated him, because she thought he was a burden who eats a lot. Noah Claypole wanted to show his superiority over Oliver. Bill Sykes, because he was selfish and full of hatred. c) Were there any people, except for Mr. Brownlow, who were nice to Oliver? Give examples. The old lady he met on his way to London who fed him a take him home when she found him exhausted. Nancy liked Oliver, because she saw herself when she was small in him, perhaps. It was a special relationship. On the one hand, Fagin taught Oliver how to pickpocket and used him in certain ways, on the other hand he probably partially substituted father to Oliver. e) Why didn t Nancy want to betray Bill Sykes? She was in love with him and wanted to stay true and faithful. She was strongly dependent on him. f) What words would you use to describe Bill Sykes personality? Sykes is an evil character. He has no positive feelings, he s cruel and reckless. He behaves really selfishly most of the time and wants to use everyone in his own advantage. g) Why did Mr.Brownlow look after Oliver and gave him education? He thought there s goodness in Oliver. He didn t want him to become a criminal. h) Why did Oliver want to visit Fagin in prison? Because he pitied him. They didn t have such a bad relationship after all. Oliver wanted Fagin to pray with him, but Fagin wasn t capable of it or he wasn t willing to do so. i) In your opinion, was Fagin a good or a bad character? It s hard to say.
