5 Introduction 3 20 years later Via Foundation was established twenty years ago. Back then, not many people were familiar with the word philanthropy. Today, there are a number of signs indicating that the Czech Republic is heading in the right direction. The country is prospering, and through our work at Via Foundation, we see more and more people year by year who care about their communities. But not all of the data is encouraging. According to a Gallop Institute poll, the Czech Republic is still in the bottom half among countries ranked by how people care about their communities and give to others. Only other post-totalitarian East European countries and countries troubled by war rank lower than we do. And when researchers asked if the respondent would help a stranger on the street, they seldom heard yes in the Czech Republic. The issues that Via sought to address when it entered the public realm twenty years ago are thus still relevant. New challenges are also apparent. Social networks are enveloping us into closed virtual worlds. In western societies, including the Czech Republic, the number of people who feel alone is growing. And as election results show, society in the Czech Republic and other countries is becoming fragmented and new divisions between people are emerging e.g. the division between liberals, who view the future optimistically, and those who are convinced that globalization and technological changes do more harm than good. These are the challenges and issues that Via Foundation seeks to bring to the public fore and help address. We will continue to develop the art of engaging in community and the art of giving. 6 4 ABOUT VIA FOUNDATION ABOUT VIA FOUNDATION Via Foundation has been supporting others for the past 20 years. During that time, we have supported over 4,500 projects led by people improving their communities in the Czech Republic and abroad. We share inspiring stories of giving, support groups of people collaboratively transforming public spaces, striving to improve neighborly relations or defending public interests to build strong neighborhoods. Our goal is to make giving, trust and interest in the welfare of others a regular part of Czech life. 7 ABOUT VIA FOUNDATION 5 Via Foundation is dedicated to the art of engaging and the art of giving. In practical terms, this means that we devote our energy and expertise to growing the number of people in the Czech Republic caring and working collaboratively to improve their communities, giving to help others and trusting others. Our vision is a society in which people act freely and courageously, accept responsibility for themselves and their community, and where giving is a regular part of life. Community development and the art of co-existing together We develop community. We seek out, connect and support individuals and groups of people changing their communities for the better. We support people who take the initiative themselves rather than waiting for others to intervene; people who work together to make Czech cities and towns come alive again. Specifically, people who transform and revitalize public spaces, restore neglected small monuments or organize neighborhood gatherings shaping community life and doing whatever is needed in their communities to bring people together. Philanthropy development and the art of giving We develop philanthropy. Via seeks to make giving, charity, generosity and caring for others a normal and regular part of life in the Czech Republic. We raise awareness about giving and recognize individuals and companies for their philanthropy. We help children and students organize benefit events, leading them towards philanthropy from an early age. We also develop online giving in the Czech Republic. Community Forum Since 2005 our partner organizations Friends of Via in Pittsburgh and Via civic association and Via Clarita in Prague have complemented the work of Via Foundation

10 8 How we help The Community in Which We Live This program is for people seeking to engage residents, businesses and institutions in improving a public space in their community such as a park, village commons or town square. We guide them in transforming the public space into a place of community gathering. Do you know that... people of all ages can engage in making positive changes in a community? 11 How we help 9 The town center in Dolní Podluží before the project TOWN center in DOLNÍ PODLUŽÍ Dolní Podluží, a small town in the Lužicky Mountains, had been lacking a proper town center for decades. With financial and technical assistance from Via, local residents began transforming an open space in the center of the town into a community place. First they planned the project and worked with an architect on the design. Next, they held work parties and built a new access path, seating areas, a campfire circle and a playground. Under the leadership of the mayor, over 200 residents took part in the work parties. Normally I wouldn t spend five minutes with my neighbors but when we met at the work party, we chatted and it was great, said a resident of Bečice, where one of the projects took place. 12 10 How we help Living Communities Did you know that... in 2017 the Living Communities program was instrumental in the instigation of a selfservice boat rental facility, cultural event programming at a community sauna, farmers markets at unexpected sites and the planting of a cherry tree allée? Through the Living Communities program, we support people seeking to improve their neighborhoods or communities with the engagement of their fellow residents. They plan and implement projects such as neighborhood festivals, revitalization of public spaces or establishment of community gardens. Our aim within the program is to help improve public spaces, strengthen neighborly relations and guide communities in using their own assets to increase local self-sufficiency in figures projects 259,028 community meetings 2,504,074 CZK ($112,508) in grants CZK raised through project fundraising drives led by the supported organizations

13 How we help 11 A new self-service boat rental self-service boat rental A new self-service boat rental in Černošice near Prague has brought together long-time and new residents and renewed the town s famous riverfront history. Almost 120 residents took part in the planning and implementation of the new boat rental facility and the surrounding area, which now offers a place to meet, rest, sunbathe, have a picnic, swim off the new dock or rent a canoe to explore the Beroun River. ( Experience Together civic association ). The greatest benefit of our project for our neighborhood was raising residents awareness of our region, making people proud of their town (so that they want to stay in the region) and creating new ties between neighbors who didn t know each other before. The Fast Grants program supports groups addressing urgent local public interest issues or unexpected changes in their communities that threaten the quality of life or negatively impact public space. Fast Grant projects are shortterm and often seek to change inefficiency in local government, wasting of public resources, demolition of buildings or vegetation and air and noise pollution. we supported a referendum about gambling in Jablonec nad Nisou as well as efforts to save a historical building and swimming facility? 2017 in figures 3 80 project consultations meetings of the Community Leader club ,000 projects CZK ($40,437) in grants

15 How we help 13 PRESERVATION OF A QUIET RESIDENTIAL DISTRICT A civic association in the city of České Budějovice succeeded in saving a quiet part of the city from new disruptive transit transportation. In 2017, the city council sought to change the land use plan to allow construction of a high-capacity road through a quiet residential neighborhood that includes a hospital and a riverfront recreation zone. Local citizens spoke up against the proposal and worked to challenge it. They organized a petition, several events and a community discussion forum. The association we supported with a Fast Grant worked tirelessly to convince local politicians that the proposal was not in the public interest and submitted comments with the help of an attorney. The council finally decided against the land use plan change, thus preserving the character of the residential district. 16 14 How we help ViabilityNet 3.0 and the Community Forum Did you know that... in 2017 we connected community leaders from 9 European countries through ViabilityNet 3.0? ViabilityNet 3.0 supports community leaders in Central and Eastern Europe and their community improvement ideas. Through the program, they take part in four multi-day meetings and four study visits to learn and connect with other leaders. We also provide community project grants and a mentor to help make their projects successful and sustainable. Since 2017, the program has included several components: community leader support, initiation of a partner organization network, support of an alumni network and collaboration with the academic world in figures partner organizations participating in the CEE network site visits in Slovakia and Serbia supported community leaders 2 686,000 site visits for program alumni CZK ($30,553) in grants

17 How we help 15 For a more communityoriented Vimperk Although Věra Vávra lives part-time in the Czech Republic and parttime abroad, her community work is focused on the Šumava region of the CR. She co-organizes charity concerts and was the main driver behind an informational campaign about a proposed bi-athlon complex in her hometown of Vimperk. Her efforts are now focused on development of community life in Vimperk. With friends from the organization Vimpersko, she is working to initiate discussion about the future of the town and bring neighbors together through community events. Věra was a participant in our program ViabilityNet 3.0, which connects community leaders from Central and Eastern Europe and gives them opportunities to interact, inspire one another and share their experiences in community work. 18 16 How we help Young Philanthropists Through the Young Philanthropists program, we support teams of children and young people ages 6 to 26 who raise money for good causes. They dedicate their energy, time and ideas to organizing benefit events and we support their efforts financially and by providing workshops and mentors. We also match the money they raise with grants of up to CZK 20,000 ($900). Did you know that... 86% of the Young Philanthropists program participants continue helping others after they complete the program? 19 How we help 17 Overcoming hurdles to reach the stars Overcoming hurdles to reach the stars Three friends in Rychnova nad Kněžnou put on a benefit event to help the Orion Center for young people with disabilities. The two-day event was called Overcoming hurdles to reach the stars and included lectures, performances and a clothing bazaar with some 8,000 items donated by residents of Rychnova nad Kněžnou. Several hundred people took part in the event, raising CZK 118,387 ($5,323). 20 18 How we help Via Bona Philanthropy Awards Thank you to all of the following program donors and partners: Nadační fond Avast, Česká spořitelna, Nadace Kooperativa, Hana Dvořáková and Dalimil Dvořák, Nadace Vodafone, Czech Television and the U.S. Embassy as the program patron Through the Via Bona Philanthropy Awards, we recognize people and companies giving back to their communities. Their generosity shows that anyone can be a philanthropist was the 20th anniversary of the Via Bona awards and in honor of that occasion we highlighted the most powerful stories of giving from the 20-year history of the awards program. The 2018 Via Bona Awards program also included an afternoon panel discussion focused on how philanthropy may develop in the future in figures 100 4,175 online votes 122 individuals and companies recognized for their giving since 1997 TV ad screenings 515 screenings of voting ads in cinemas 15 finalists

21 How we help 19 INDIVIDUAL DONOR CATEGORY ZDENKA WASSERBAUEROVÁ Eighteen years ago Zdenka Wasserbauerova s grandson came down with leukemia. Although he survived, a three-year-old boy in the same ward died. For Zdenka Wasserbauerova, an accountant in a tire factory, it was a life-changing moment. If a bone marrow donor had been found, the boy would have lived. She began devoting her time and energy to a single cause: outreach among young people to encourage them to sign up for the bone marrow registry to help save lives. Over the past twenty years, Zdenka has visited schools, made presentations, convinced factory workers and others. According to estimates by the national registry of bone marrow donors, her work has resulted in about 10,000 new donors which means she has indirectly saved many human lives. Young Philanthropist Award MILAN DZURIAK Milan Dzuriak was a competitive athlete with Olympic aspirations until health problems ended his career. To raise money for others with health problems, Milan biked 2,000 kilometers around the CR. He raised enough to buy one disabled boy a new wheelchair and send a second boy on his dream trip to Paris. Good Company Award ČSOB Bank Československá obchodní banka (ČSOB) has a long-standing tradition of philanthropy. In the early 1990s, the company was involved in the founding of the Goodwill Education Fund at the Olga Havlova Foundation and since then, it has supported hundreds of disabled and disadvantaged students through scholarships. Its employee volunteer programs offer both expertise and manual assistance to non-profit organizations. The bank s Goodwill Card is a special debit card for private banking clients where a percentage of every client purchase goes to charitable causes. Regional philanthropists Jan Školník and Hobra-Školník Jan Školník runs a successful family business, Hobra-Školník. He is also dedicated to regional development in Broumov, a remote area that shares a border with Poland. He founded the Broumov Regional Development Agency, which strives to improve the quality of life in the Broumov region and increase tourism. He led a major effort to restore the unique Broumov monastery and transform it into an education and culture center. What I find impressive about the Via Bona Philanthropy Award nominations is that there are still people who feel compelled by a feeling of solidarity with other people, with society, with the clan of humanity at a time in history when it is so easy to stand by and do nothing. 22 20 How we help The Art of Giving journal THE ART OF GIVING supports the development of philanthropy in the Czech Republic. Its objective is to inspire donors, potential donors and anyone else who wants to give back to their community. The journal contains articles about donors and the people they support and about philanthropy in the Czech Republic and around the world. We publish four issues per year. Online versions of the Art of Giving are available in Czech at Journalist Nora Grundová is the journal s editor in chief. 23 How we help 21 Some of the journal s key articles in 2017 included a piece about effective altruism, an interview with Jacquelline Fuller, head of Google s non-profit arm, and an interview with philanthropist and businessman Sanjiv Suri, who received a Via Bona Philanthropy Award for his work. In the final issue of 2017, Via s Executive Director Jiří Bárta reminisced about Maria Horová, our first legacy donor. And there s just one more thing I m worried about At the end of 2017 projects supported by Via Foundation through the Mr. Hora and Mrs. Horová Fund came to an end. By distributing the last of the money in this fund, we fulfilled the final will and testament of Mr. and Mrs. Hora, a couple who helped others both during and after their lifetimes. Not many people manage that! This interview with Jiří Bárta about Marie Horová, the first donor to bequeath property to Via Foundation, explains how it all came to pass. Jan Gregor interviewed Jiří Bárta. How did it all begin? We met Mr. Hora and Mrs. Horová through a young lawyer, who called Via sometime in She said, Hello, I heard that Via knows how to establish donor funds for donors. The reason I ask is because I ve met a couple (they were 83 at the time) and they really want to give away part of their life savings and I ve been trying to convince them not to set up their own foundation. After that we began meeting with Mr. Hora and Mrs. Horová and over borsch soup, golubci cabbage rolls and Becherovka liqueur, we set up the Mr. Hora and Mrs. Horová Fund to help children in the Carpatho-Ukraine. The fund was set up as a sinking fund meaning that Mr. Hora and Mrs. Horová deposited a one-time gift of CZK 300,000 into the fund and we started awarding CZK 50,000 grants to support initiatives helping children and young people in the Carpatho-Ukraine. Mrs. Horová s dream was to help children from poor Carpath-Ukrainian families increase their chances at succeeding in life, give them access to education and enable them to escape from poverty. Why did she decide to support education? She knew that conditions in the Carpatho-Ukraine are really tough and that if you don t have access to education, your chances of succeeding in life are lower. She wanted to give more children a greater chance of succeeding in life and she viewed education as the key. She even refused to help disabled children in orphanages in a kind of brusque way, saying: I feel really sorry for them and empathize with them but with the limited resources I have, I want to invest into the development of healthy children who have the chance to educate themselves and live a fruitful life. With an education, they will be able to earn money and maybe even pass the help on to others. She knew clearly that she wanted to invest into the education of healthy children. 24 22 How we help DARUJME.cz Did you know that... anyone can hold a fundraising drive for his or her favorite organization? In 2017, ambassadors most often held fundraising drives in conjunction with marathons, birthdays, bike races and extreme hikes. In early 2017 we launched a new version of Darujme.cz, our online giving platform. The new version enables individuals to hold fundraising drives to raise money for selected projects. A total of 200 ambassadors used this tool to raise over CZK 3.7 million ($164,795). Donors gave a record CZK 52 million ($2,310,290) through Darujme.cz in 2017, which went to some 400 organizations. Companies also held fundraising drivers. For example, Nadace Vodafone supported the CF Hero application for patients with cystic fibrosis and Citfin supported the Sue Ryder Home in figures CZK ($35,972) raised for good causes 42,810 fundraising drives 51,896,476 donors CZK in gifts

25 How we help 23 TechSoup Did you know that... 5 new partners such as Adobe and Amazon came on board in 2017? Their products and services are now available to NGOs through TechSoup. Through TechSoup ČR, we help organizations which are striving to make positive change in society get the technology they need. The program also helps our technological partners deliver their products and services to the right place. In 2017, we organized 10 offline and online training events for NGOs and added 5 new partners to our portfolio of hardware and software (Autodesk, Q&A Software, Amazon, Adobe and Airbnb) in figures 5 new tech partners 4 webinar newly registered organizations training events

26 24 How we help PARTNER PROJECTS T-Mobile Fund Helping through Stories and Volunteer of the Year In collaboration with Via Foundation, T-Mobile supports its employees in their charitable efforts. Each year T-Mobile encourages its employees to give through its holiday season Helping through Stories fundraising drive. In 2017, T-Mobile matched employees gifts with its own contribution of CZK 654,722 ($29,442). This enabled us to award CZK 1,335,394 ($60,052) in January 2017 to support people in crisis. The grant recipients were nominated by T-Mobile employees. In autumn 2017, T-Mobile recognized employees involved in charitable efforts. These employees were given the opportunity to support community organizations in which they serve as volunteers. A total of 7 organizations were supported with CZK 55,000 ($2,474). Let s Talk The key themes of this program are communication, collaboration and integration. Along with grants, we provided the supported organizations with an opportunity to participate in free training through the T-Mobile Fund Academy, through which T-Mobile employees provide expert advisory services, practical one-day workshops and webinars and volunteer assistance. Program donor: T-Mobile CZK 3,027,565 ($136,150) in grants 37 supported projects Parkour court for teenagers in the Ládví Beachclub implemented with a grant from the Let s Talk program

27 How we help 25 DONOR FUNDS Special Grants We offer individual donors who wish to support a particular organization or project but do not seek to establish their own donor fund help with donation processing. We provide such donors with professional support and handle all of the administrative and communication tasks with the recipient of the donation. In 2017, we supported 8 projects in this way in a total amount of CZK 2,125,771. Supported projects included the organizations ROZKOŠ bez RIZIKA, z.s., Jako doma Homelike, o.p.s. and Naděje pro děti úplňku, z.s. Sýkora Family Fund The proceeds from this donor fund support various projects in the Czech Republic and abroad. In establishing this donor fund, the Sýkoras seek to help their children understand the value of philanthropic giving. In 2017, two projects were supported including the Most Engaged High School Student competition. A total of CZK 68,900 ($3,069) was awarded. Fund donors: Ericka Sýkorová and Jan Sýkora Fund donors: Jan Školník, Martin Kulík, Martin Ducháček, NesST and other individual donors Rachůnek Fund Marek Herman established this donor fund in Since then, Marek and dozens of his students have donated more than CZK 500,000 ($22,485) to the fund. It is a permanent fund, which means that only the fund yields are used to support educational and development projects for parents caring for children under the age of six. No projects were supported from the fund in Fund donor: Marek Herman Three Sisters Are Helping Fund The music band Three Sisters established a donor fund at VIA Foundation in late The fund s mission is to help children and youth and at-risk individuals who must rely on others help and people who unexpectedly find themselves in crisis because of an accident, illness or other personal tragedy. In 2017, the fund provided help to enable needy individuals to undergo medical treatment valued at CZK 90,000 ($4,008). The Mr. and Mrs. Hora Fund helps the needy in the Carpatho-Ukraine Three Sisters, corporate and individual donors to the fund

28 26 How we help Other events in 2017 I truly appreciate each and every donor s support. Receiving donations is a great motivator and a commitment. I know it s a luxury to be able to donate to culture. And I know that it is a value that is more difficult to support than people s basic daily needs and I appreciate the donations we have received all the more because of that. I am so pleased that the dance hall will be able to continue to provide cultural programming in 2018! Zdeňka Morávková, Cultural manager of the Tančírna dance hall 20 stories of giving and helping To celebrate our 20th anniversary, we published a small book showcasing 20 stories of giving and helping involving Via Foundation grantees. Young philanthropists holding benefit concerts to raise money to help disabled children, villagers revitalizing their commons, residents saving local historical buildings from demolition and the team at the Chříč brewery, which employs disabled people are just a few of the book s treasures. Fundraising drive for Tančírna dance hall To celebrate our 20th anniversary, we ran a fundraising drive for the art deco Tančírna dance hall in the Rychlebský Mountains. One hundred years ago, the dance hall was a gathering place in this remote region. We held a fundraising drive online through Darujme.cz to help make it a vibrant community center once again. Some 130 donors contributed CZK 178,753 ($7,961) and another CZK 79,500 was raised through a benefit concert and the auctioning of two scooters donated by the scooter company Kostka. The total amount raised was CZK 258,253 ($11,503), which is enough to cover the annual costs of program development and management at the dance hall and which will enable concerts, an international festival, a period ball and a series of dances.

29 How we help 27 PROGRAMS WHICH WE CONCLUDED IN 2017 Viadukt In the Viadukt program, we guide people working in the non-profit sector through the ins and outs of community work. The program is comprised of three parts: the Guide series of training workshops, the Collection, which are multiday workshops about communication and cross-sector collaboration, and ViaCafé, which are informal gatherings where people share experience, support each other and make connections. The 2017 Guide program ran from January through June and helped 14 participants with personal professional development and organizational development. In October 2017, we held a Collection two-day training workshop about proposal quality, goal setting and development of proposal ideas. We also tied the program to other training workshops in our other programs. Since 2014, when we initiated Viadukt, we have supported 97 people through the program. Better Business Through the Better Business program, we supported entrepreneurs who connected business with a good cause. These social enterprise start-ups aim to initiate positive social change through their work. The supported projects include a small laundry service that employs people with hearing impairments; a brewery, a bakery and a coffee roastery which employ disabled people and an organization working out of a castle that employs people facing longterm unemployment. The supported organizations received grants and training. The program was implemented with the generous support of UniCredit Foundation and UniCredit Bank. We supported a total of 16 enterprises with social, environmental, community and/or economic benefits to society through two rounds of the program. Cultural Heritage Fund The Cultural Heritage Fund was established in response to the extensive floods in At that time, we raised CZK 19.5 million from Czech and American donors to help families afflicted by the floods and to restore damaged monuments. 43 Benefit events 41 Benefit events for Via Foundation Each year we hold several benefit events to raise money to help fund our programs. We love them because we get to spend an evening with our donors and all manner of fascinating guests enlightened philanthropists, business people, company owners and artists, for example. Our great thanks to go all of the people who supported our Charitable Auction in different ways, joined us at a benefit dinner or held a fundraising drive for Via Foundation Charitable Auction The 11th annual Via Foundation Charitable Auction took place in November 2017 at the Prague Žofín Palace. We raised a record CZK 3,458,100. TV star Tereza Kostková was the event MC and as our guests reported, the atmosphere during the auction was positively electrifying. Just under 100 leading artists, designers, Czech brands, winemakers and others donated items to the auction. The Exceptional Experiences auction items attracted the most attention. One of the most soughtafter items was A Day as the Director of Via Foundation, which went for CZK 160,000. The same bid price went to A Role in a Sklep Theater Play. Dinner with athletes Gabriela and Petr Koukal was another popular item, finally going for CZK 100,000. The auction proceeds were used to support philanthropy and community projects in the Czech Republic and Via Foundation s organizational development. Charitable Auction

44 42 Benefit events Peer2peer fundraising drives and online fundraising Peer2peer fundraising, a.k.a. an individual fundraising drive, is becoming a more and more popular form of fundraising around the world and the Czech Republic is no exception. We guide individuals in setting up their very own special fundraising drives on our online giving platform, Darujme.cz. In 2017, 6 courageous individuals held their own fundraising drives to support our Fast Grants and Living Communities programs. Two of these fundraisers celebrated birthdays through their drives and four ran races. Together, they raised CZK 268,565 from their friends and acquaintances in support of Via programming. Via Foundation also celebrated a birthday in 2017 our 20th through a special fundraising drive. We raised money for the revitalization of cultural programming at the beautiful art deco Tančírna dance hall in the Jesenik mountains. Several years ago, local residents in this remote region of the Jesenik mountains saved the building from demolition and now the dance hall is reestablishing its popularity as a cultural hub. Through a benefit concert by the local band Priessnitz and our online fundraising drive, a total of CZK 180,000 was raised from 130 donors. The money will help cover concerts, an international festival and a series of dances (ranging from swing to ballroom, if you happen to be in the neighborhood) and, best of all, a period ball. Benefit dinner with Magda Vašáryova In March 2017, we had the pleasure of holding a benefit dinner with Magda Vašáryova renowned actress, diplomat and politician. Our guests enjoyed an evening of interesting conversation about life in politics and civil society. Thanks to the generosity of our guests, we raised CZK 127,500 for our program The Community in Which We Live. This program supports people improving public spaces in Czech towns and villages by engaging their neighbors in the design and build phases. The benefit dinner proceeds also contributed to Via s fundraising costs. We are grateful to the Radisson Blu Alcron Hotel for hosting the dinner.
