1 Bf 109E R0007 1:48 intro No other aircraft of the German Luftwaffe is so intimately connected with its rise and fall in the course of the Second World War than the Messerschmitt Bf 109. This type, by whose evolution outlived the era in which it was conceptualized, bore the brunt of Luftwaffe duties from the opening battles of Nazi Germany through to her final downfall. The history of the aircraft begins during 194-5, when the Reich Ministry of Aviation formulated a requirement for the development of a single-engined monoplane fighter. Proposals were submitted by Arado, Heinkel, Focke-Wulf and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. The last mentioned firm featured a technical director named Professor Willy Messerschmitt, who was riding a wave of popularity based on the success of his recent liason aircraft, the Bf 108. His goal was to conceive of an aircraft with the best possible performance for the specified weight, size, and aerodynamic qualities. Over the subsequent months, several prototypes were built that served first and foremost in development flights and further modifications. The aircraft was relatively small, and compared to the prevailing trends of the time, docile with revolutionary features such as low wing design, the use of a retractable landing gear, a wing with a very narrow profile, wing slats, landing flaps, weapons firing through the prop hub, and so on. Even the enclosed cockpit and the method of construction were not very common just four years prior to the beginning of the Second World War. At its conception, the Bf 109 was a very promising asset despite some powerplant troubles. These were solved by the introduction of the DB1. This engine, together with its extrapolated development DB 5, is umbilically connected to the types success. These two-row, twelve cylinder inverted V engines powered several tens of thousands of '109s in over 25 versions and variants. The first combat use was by three developmental Bf 109s in the Spanish Civil War, where they were delivered in December, 196. The pre-series airframes were to, first of all, validate the aircraft's abilities in modern aerial combat. Shortly thereafter, production machines in the form of the Bf 109B-1 began to reach 2./J.88, the Legion Condor. The desire of Germany to demonstrate her aerial prowess to potential foes was advanced further in international sport meets. The triumphs attained in Zurich in the summer of 197 were complemented several months later by grabbing the speed record of kph. In very short order, the progressive developments represented by the C, D and E versions appeared. Despite this, the delivery of the types to combat units did not sustain a rate that was desired by military brass. Even by August, 198, the Bf 109 accounted for less than half of the 64 front line fighters in service. The later months saw an increase in these rates. By the time of the invasion of Poland (which saw the participation of only a little more than 200 aircraft) the Luftwaffe possessed the best fighter produced in continental Europe. With both a qualitative and quantitative advantage, the fighter wing of the Luftwaffe entered the Polish campaign, the first defenses of the Fatherland, Blitzkrieg against the West, and the Battle for France. With one foot in the door that was the English Channel, the Luftwaffe embarked on the attacks on Britain in the summer months of Here, the first weakness of the Bf 109 was revealed: the inability to carry drop tanks that would have enabled the type to effectively escort bombers to England. Even if by the end of the war it was clear that the development of the Bf 109 was exhausted, during its combat career, the type was able to keep pace with the foes that it encountered. Besides its primary function as fighter, the Bf 109 also appeared as a fighterbomber, reconnaissance platform, night fighter, trainer and rammjäger. The disappearance of the Bf 109 from the skies over Europe was not spelled out by the end of the war. Several examples were in Swiss service up to 1949, and many flew in the air force of Czechoslovakia in both original form with a DB 5 powerplant and as aircraft built out of necessity with surplus Jumo 211s. The latter type also served as the first fighter to fight for the independence of the newly formed state of Israel. V prùbìhu následujících mìsícù vzniklo nìkolik prototypù, které sloužily zejména ke zkouškám a dalšímu vývoji. Letoun byl pomìrnì malý, oproti stávajícím zvyklostem relativnì jemný, s revoluèními konstrukèními prvky jako byla dolnokøídlá koncepce, použití zatahovacího podvozku, køídlo s velmi štíhlým profilem, pohyblivé sloty, vztlakové klapky, zbranì støílející osou vrtule, atd. Dokonce uzavíratelný pøekryt kabiny nebo skoøepinová konstrukce nebyly ètyøi roky pøed zaèátkem 2. svìtové války tak obvyklým jevem, jak by se z dnešního pohledu mohlo zdát. Bf 109 byl již z poèátku svého vývoje, i pøes problémy s pohonnou jednotkou, velmi nadìjným projektem. Problémy s pohonem vyøešila až zástavba motoru DB 1. Ten je spolu s pozdìjším DB 5 neodmyslitelnì spojen s úspìchy Bf 109. Øadový invertní dvanáctiválec do V pohánìl nìkolik desítek tisíc vyprodukovaných stodevítek ve více než 25 verzích a variantách. K prvnímu bojovému nasazení tøí zkušebních kusù Bf 109 došlo za obèanské války ve Španìlsku, kam byly odeslány v prosinci 196. Stroje z pøedsériové výroby mìly pøedevším ukázat schopnosti letounu v moderní letecké válce. Následnì se do bojového nasazení u 2./J.88 Legion Condor zaèaly dostávat i sériové stroje varianty Bf 109B-1. Snaze Nìmecka ukazovat svou leteckou sílu potenciálním protivníkùm napomáhala i sportovní klání. Triumf letounù Bf 109 na leteckém mítinku v Curychu v létì 197 byl doplnìn o nìkolik mìsícù pozdìji ustanovením rychlostního rekordu km/h. Ve velmi krátkých èasových úsecích následovaly verze C, D a E. Pøesto však doplòování nových strojù k bojovým útvarùm nepokraèovalo tempem, který by si velení mohlo pøát. Ještì v srpnu roku 198 tvoøila výzbroj letouny Bf 109 ménì než polovinu z 64 stíhaèù první linie. Ovšem bìhem následujících mìsícù roku se tempo dodávek k bojovým útvarùm zrychlilo. V okamžik pøepadení Polska (kterého se však zúèastnilo jen o málo více než dvì sta Bf 109) tak Luftwaffe disponovala zajisté nejlepší stíhaèkou, jaká byla v kontinentální Evropì vyrobena. S technickou i množstevní pøevahou tak stíhací èást Luftwaffe absolvovala polskou kampaò, první obranu Fatherlandu, Blitzkrieg proti západu i bitvu o Francii. S jednou nohou vykroèenou pøes Kanál La Manche zahájila Luftwaffe v letních mìsících roku 1940 útoky na Británii. V tu dobu se mj. projevil jeden vážný nedostatek Bf nepøipravenost konstrukce stroje na nesení pøídavné nádrže, která by zvýšila dolet letounu pøi doprovodu bombardérù nad Británii. Tato zdánlivá malièkost byla jedním z faktorù, které zapøíèinily porážku Luftwaffe v Bitvì o Británii. Zkušenosti z bojù v r napomohly pøi vývoji verze F, která se zaèala k bojovým útvarùm dostávat bìhem pøedjaøí Elegance Bf 109 u Friedricha dosáhla vrcholu. Po bojích nad Kanálem a severní Francií, spíše již defenzivního charakteru, se Bf 109F zapojily i do útoèných akcí, a to zejména pøi operaci Barbarossa na východì nebo v severní Africe. Do pozdìjších úkolù Jagdwaffe ve druhé fázi války na východì i do obrany Øíše v letech se zapojovaly pøedevším Bf 109 verze G a v posledních mìsících války pak také verze K. Aèkoli na konci války bylo jasné, že koncepce letounu Bf 109 se po deseti letech služby dostala na hranici možností, po celou dobu své bojové èinnosti dokázaly jednotlivé varianty držet krok se svými stíhacími protivníky. Kromì svého prioritního urèení stíhacího letounu se Bf 109 objevily i v rolích stíhacíbombardovací, prùzkumná, noèní stíhací, palubní stíhací, cvièné nebo jako rammjäger. Nebe se pro Bf 109 nezavøelo ani po skonèení války. Nìkolik strojù sloužilo až do roku 1949 ve Švýcarsku, mnohé létaly v balkánských zemích, v osvobozeném Èeskoslovensku, a to jak v pùvodní podobì s motory DB 5, tak v pøestavìné variantì s motory Jumo 211. Zejména tyto stroje pozdìji tvoøily základ letectva bránícího svobodu novì budovaného státu Izrael. Finsko zrušilo Bf 109 až v roce 1954 a Španìlsko opustilo své HA-1109 a 1112 dokonce až v roce 1967.

16 A Bf 109 E-1, 6./JG 26, summer 199 This Bf 109 E represents the camouflage scheme used on German 109s prior to WWII and in its early phases. The dark green RLM 70 and 71 color on the upper surfaces are complemented with light blue RLM 65 on lower surfaces. The white tail and wingtips were used during war games. A few months later, the mountain goat / chamois emblem of the 6th Staffel appears just below the cockpit. The unit badge of JG 26 is present on both sides of the fuselage and the yellow of the 6th Staffel adorns the spinner as well Tento letoun pøedstavuje marking používaný na Bf 109 pøed zaèátkem 2. svìtové války. 17 B Bf 109 E-, W.Nr. 5057, flown by Oblt. Josef Priller, CO of 6./JG 51, France, late 1940 The personal mount of Josef Priller underwent several camouflage color modifications throughout its career. The initial scheme was probably composed of RLM 70/71/65. Later, the underside light blue was extended up the sides of the fuselage and this color was subdued by the application of irregular squiggles of RLM 02 and 71. Furthermore, the upper surfaces of the wing, originally composed of broken lines, were augmented in a similar manner as the fuselage sides.. At the time, the aircraft also received a yellow nose section and rudder. The extent of the front end yellow coloring is not clear, and we are offering one option. The emblem of II./JG 51 Gott strafe England! (God punish England!) is sprayed on without the usual white background, a black raven with an umbrella symbolizes Prime minister N. Chamberlain. The 6th Staffel marking - the Ace of Hearts - subsequently was used on Priller s later aircraft as a personal marking. The kill marks denoting Priller s aerial victories on the tail partially obscured the Swastika. Brewmaster Josef Priller attained 101 aerial victories in 1,07 operational flights between 199 and The pictured aircraft was later inherited by another well-known Luftwaffe pilot, Hptm. Herbert Ihlefeld, who used it in 1941 in the Balkan campaign. Osobní letoun Josefa Prillera prošel øadou barevných úprav. Pùvodní kamufláž zøejmì tvoøilo velmi tmavé schéma z barev RLM 70/71/65. Pozdìji byla svìtle modrá RLM 65 ze spodních ploch vytažena vysoko na boky trupu, které byly mírnì ztmaveny nepravidelnými skvrnami barev RLM 02 a 71. Horní plocha køídla kamuflovaná lomenými poli barev dostala nepravidelné skvrny stejných barev. V tutéž dobu stroj také dostal žlutý nátìr pøídì a smìrového kormidla. Rozsah žlutého nátìru na pøídi zùstává pøedmìtem spekulací, nabízíme jednu z možností. Emblém II./JG 51 Gott strafe England! (Bùh ztrestej Anglii!) nemá obvyklé bílé pozadí, havran s deštníkem imituje britského ministerského pøedsedu Chamberlaina. Srdcové eso znak 6. Staffel se pozdìji objevoval na všech Prillerových letounech jeho osobní emblém. Symboly Prillerových vítìzství na smìrovce ve formì svislých proužkù s daty èásteènì zakrývají svastiku. Pivovarský sládek Josef Priller dosáhl bìhem 2. svìtové války 101 vítìzství v 107 operaèních letech. Zobrazený letoun po nìm zdìdil další známý pilot Luftwaffe, Hptm. 18 C Bf 109 E-, flown by Hptm. Dr. Erich Mix, Stab I./JG 5, Wiesbaden-Erbenheim, November, 199 JG 5 conducted experiments with camouflage colors at the beginning of WWII. This led to the birth of colorful aircraft, but the identity of the colors used remains a mystery. The theory we used for our color scheme says that the RLM 70/71 colors were overpainted with segments of RLM 02 grey-green. Period photos of the aircraft betray little about the pattern of upper surfaces so we used pictures of similarly camouflaged aircraft as a source. Dr. Erich Mix is a very interesting person. He fough in the Great War as a member of Jasta 54. He flew the Fokker D.VII and downed three enemy airplanes. He managed to destroy six enemy aircraft in the air during WW2, three with I./JG 5 and two as CO of III./JG 2 in the Frech and British skies and another one in He became CO of I./JG 1 in late 1941 and from 1942 to 194 he led the whole JG 1. He was active in public life also. He was a member of NSDAP, two times joined the SS, and was elected as mayor of Wiesbaden. After the war he became a member of local parliament, worked for the German Red Cross etc. Na samém poèátku války experimentovala JG 5 s kamuflážními barvami. Vznikly tak pomìrnì pestré letouny, avšak identifikace použitých barev zùstává pro badatele tak trochu záhadou. Pøi naší rekonstrukci jsme vycházeli z teorie, že kombinace barev RLM 70/71 byla na horních plochách doplnìna poli barvy RLM 02. Dochované snímky letounu neukazují vìtšinu horních ploch, zde nabízíme rekonstrukci dle podpùrných dokumentù. Štábní oznaèení na boku trupu patøí letounu technického dùstojníka. Dr. Erich Mix je zajímavou postavou. V øadách Jasta 54 se zúèastnil již Velké války, kde létal na Fokkeru D.VII a pøipsal si tøi ovìøená vítìzství. Bìhem 2. svìtové války dosáhl pøinejmenším šesti sestøelù, tøí u I./JG5, dvou jako velitel III./JG2 nad Francií a Velkou Británií a jednoho v rámci vyšší velitelské funkce v roce Na podzim 1941 se ujal vedení I./JG 1 a od roku 1942 do roku 194 velel celé JG 1. Angažoval se také ve veøejném životì. Stal se èlenem NSDAP, dvakrát vstoupil do øad SS a po válce se stal primátorem Wiesbadenu, zastupoval FDP v zemském snìmu, pracoval pro Èervený køíž a pùsobil v dalších funkcích. 1 S ? ? Ioan Di Cesare, Escadrila 57, Grupul 7 Vanatoare, D Karpovka Stalingrad airfield, Soviet Union, November, 1942 The Romanian air force, apart of their own local aircraft, used aircraft purchased abroad. The Bf 109 of various subtypes were among them. The E- illustrated was delivered from Germany in the typical export camouflage of RLM 71 and 65 colors. The Donald Duck artwork was the unit badge of Grupul 7 (Group). Five white stripes on the left side of the fuselage symbolize Di Cesare s ground victories during Operation Barbarossa, two kill marks on the fin denote his aerial victories. Apart of the pilot 'DIC' initials, the Hai Fetito!" (Go ahead Fetita) inscription was also painted on both sides of the engine cowling. This references to the pilot s favourite racehorse philly 'Fetita'. Ioan Di Cesare is a Rumanian aces with 16 confirmed victories Rumunské letectvo používalo bìhem 2. svìtové války kromì vlastních konstrukcí také v zahranièí zakoupené letouny. Mezi nimi byly Bf 109 rùzných verzí. Zobrazený Bf 109 E- byl dodán v typické exportní kombinací barev RLM 71/65. Kresba kaèera Donalda je znakem Grupul 7. Pìt bílých proužkù pod kabinou symbolizuje pozemní vítìzství Di Cesareho z operace Barbarossa, dva proužky na levé stranì kýlovky pak vzdušná vítìzství. Kromì monogramu DIC nalevo pod kabinou pilot pøidal také nápis Hai Fetito! (Pojïme Fetito!) na motorový kryt. Odkazoval na dostihovou kobylu jménem Fetita, kterou si Di Cesare oblíbil. 20 E Bf 109 E-, flown by Hptm. Werner Mölders, CO of III./JG 5, May, 1940 Werner Mölders flew this aircraft from late 199 to June 6, On that day, he was shot down by French pilot Lt. René Pommier-Layragues (6 v. in total). The fin sports eighteen white kill marks. Up to the time of his death, Mölders downed enemy aircraft, the first of them during the Spanish Civil War and he became the most successful pilot of this WWII prelude. He was awarded the Knight s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Werner Mölders died on November 22, 1941 onboard an He 111 bomber during the journey from Crimea to Germany to take part in Ernst Udet s funeral. This E- is interesting as its wing and horizontal stabilizer upper surfaces, formerly painted RLM 70/71, are oversprayed with light RLM 02 splotches. Werner Mölders používal tento stroj od konce roku 199 do 6. èervna 1940, kdy jej sestøelil francouzský pilot Lt. René Pommier-Layragues (celkem 6 v.). Kýlovka nese bílých symbolù sestøelù. Do své smrti Mölders sestøelil celkem nepøátelských letounù. První úspìchy zaznamenal ve španìlské obèanské válce, kde se stal nejúspìšnìjším stíhacím pilotem. 21 F Bf 109 E-4, W.Nr. 1480, flown by Oblt. Franz von Werra, Wierre-au-Bois, France, September 2, 1940 The illustrated Emil became the subject of a fascinating event that delivered the first German ace, Oblt. Franz von Werra, into British hands. On the morning of September 5, 1940, Franz von Werra was shot down over Kent. He managed a successful belly landing, was taken prisoner, and his plane was scrutinized by RAF experts. Von Werra attempted to escape on several occasions, and finally succeeded in Canada during transfer to a POW camp. He managed to go through the United States, to South America, and then back to Germany, where he rejoined the Luftwaffe. He served on both the eastern and western fronts, but had strict orders to avoid the shores of England. The Channel, nevertheless, proved fateful for him when, on October 25, 1941 as CO of I./JG 5, he disappeared over it. W.Nr carried the standard camouflage of 02/71/65 with white identification markings. These included the rudder and wingtips. The RAF report suggests that the engine cowl was in RLM 65, was cleaner than the rest of the airframe, and may have been a replacement off another machine. The tail surfaces carried victory marks (eight in the air and five on the ground). Positioning of them was different on each side of the fin. The RLM65 color extended to the upper surfaces of the leading edge wing. Von Werra se stal známým svým útìkem z kanadského zajateckého tábora, kdy se dokázal pøes pùlku svìta vrátit na nìmecké území a dál bojovì létat. To se mu stalo osudným, když se 25. øíjna 1941 nevrátil z letu nad Kanálem. Von Werrùv stroj je èasto zobrazován s bílým motorovým krytem. Dùkladné studium fotografií a archivních podkladù však dokazuje, že na letounu nebyl. 22 G Bf 109 E-4, W.Nr. 5819, Obstlt. Adolf Galland, CO of JG 26, Audembert, France, December, 1940 Adolf Galland, ace and future General, flew the illustrated Emil in the fall of 1940 to the beginning of 1941 as CO of III. Gruppe, and later of the entire JG 26. The tactical markings on the aircraft kept pace with those changes. The standard camouflage of 02/71/65 was darkened on the fuselage sides with RLM 02/71. The yellow cowling was complemented by the yellow rudder that also bore the kill marks. The surface area of the original RLM65 was not enough for them, and the yellow was oversprayed with fresh RLM65 for the next row of kill marks. The most typical changes for 5819 at this time came with the personal emblem of Mickey Mouse and most of all the installation of the ZFR-4 telescope (installed together with the regular Revi). It didn t serve as an actual sight as it did for the identification of far off aircraft. Galland replaced Werner Mölders who commanded the German fighter force as General der Jagdflieger. Later on he became famous for locking horns with Hermann Göring. He established JV 44 at the end of the war, the famous unit well known for its Me 2 jet fighters and colorful Fw 190 D piston fighters. Galland managed to shot down 104 enemy airplanes and was awarded with Knight Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Gallandovy úspìchy jsou namalovány na smìrovce. Podklad symbolù je v barvì RLM 65, žlutý nátìr dostala smìrovka dodateènì. Jak však pøibývaly sestøely, musel být zpìtnì rozšiøován barevný podklad natíráním èerstvé RLM 65. Postavièka Mickey Mouse je Gallandovým osobním emblémem. Gallandùv letoun je unikátní experimentálním zabudováním teleskopického zamìøovaèe ZFR-4 do èelního štítku. Galland jej používal spoleènì se standardním REVI, nikoliv však jako zamìøovaè, nýbrž jako dalekohled pro rozpoznávání letadel. Galland zastával po smrti Wernera Mölderse funkci generála stíhaèù, proslul svými neshodami s Hermannem Göringem. Na konci války založil slavnou JV 44 vyzbrojenou proudovými Me 2 a pestrými Fw 190 D. 23 H Bf 109 E-4/B, W.Nr. 5, flown by Ofw. Reinhold Schmetzer, 8. /JG 77, Soviet Union, July 20, 1941 On July 20, 1942 Ofw. Reinhold Schmetzer was forced to carry out a belly landing due to engine damage after a clash with a MiG- fighter. The Soviet fighter became Schmetzer s twentieth victory. The badge on the cowling is that of III./JG 77. The rudder sports nineteen Abschussbalken the kill marks that symbolize Schmetzer s wartime successes. The camouflage scheme was adjusted to the local conditions on the Eastern front. A rather light scheme of RLM 71/02 was ovepainted with dark green RLM 70 or 71 color on the upper and side surfaces. The fuselage gun cowling is likely a spare part and wears its original camouflage colours. The 250kg bomb is attached to the fuselage rack. Na smìrovce je namalováno 19 Abschussbalken symbolizujících Schmetzerovy úspìchy. Kamufláž letounu byla uzpùsobena podmínkám nad východní frontou. Dosti svìtlé schéma RLM 71/02/65 bylo ztmaveno kompletním nátìrem horních a boèních ploch tmavou zelenou barvou, zøejmì RLM 70 nebo RLM 71. 24 I Bf 109 E-7, III./ZG 1, Belgorod and Kuteinikovo airfield, Soviet Union, May to August, 1942 The Wasp artwork is familiar to most fans of the Luftwaffe due to its presence on Bf 110s of ZG 1. The artwork was created by Lt. Richard Malchfelder, and was originally composed of three small wasps. In the first half of 1942, the wasps were painted on the noses of Bf 109 E-7s from III./ZG 1. The artwork disappeared from the 109 s during the unit s transfer to North Africa in August 1942 and the unit was gradually re-armed with the Me 210 twin-engined heavy fighters. The aircraft illustrated had been used by various fighter units before its deployment with III./ZG 1 and many colorful splotches were applied of the fuselage during that period. Four 50kg bomb could be attached to the multiple fuselage bomb rack. Kresbu vosy zná vìtšina fanouškù letectví z pøídí dvoumotorových Bf 110 ze stavu ZG 1. Emblém vymyslel v roce 199 Lt. Richard Malchfelder. Zpoèátku mìl podobu tøí malých vos a až èasem se z nich stala jedna velká. Vosy se objevily v první polovinì roku 1942 také na pøídích Bf 109 E-7, jimiž bvla vyzbrojena III. Gruppe ZG 1. Vosy se z pøídí Bf 109 vytratily pøi pøesunu III. Gruppe do severní Afriky v srpnu 1942, kde tato jednotka postupnì pøezbrojila na dvoumotorové Me 210. Pøed III./ZG 1 používaly tento stroj zøejmì stíhací jednotky, což se na jeho vzhledu projevilo množstvím rùznobarevných skvrn, jež zakrývaly marking pøedchozích uživatelù. 25 J Bf 109 E-7, III./JG 77, Belgrad Semlin airfield, Yugoslavia, May, 1941 This aircraft initially belonged to Oblt. Hubert Mutherich of 5./JG 54, as indicated not only by the unit marking on the nose, but also by the kill marks on the rudder and the name Lilo under the canopy. After the aircraft was transferred over to III. Gruppe JG 77, it gained not only the 8./JG 54 emblem (the comical bird) and II./JG 54 (the Aspern Lion), but also the wolf head on the engine cowl. The aircraft gained an interesting addition to the camouflage paint in the form of sprayed areas of RLM 70 and RLM 71. The port aileron was a replacement and carried yellow markings. Photographs also suggest that the aircraft could have carried a yellow stripe on the trailing edge of the flaps. At the time of the transference of this aircraft to III./JG 77, this feature became virtually indistinguishable. Mutherich, an ace with 4 kills, died in action against the Soviets, when on September 9th, 1941, he made a forced landing after combat with Soviet fighters. He was awarded the Knight s Cross on August 6th, Tento letoun pùvodnì patøil Oblt. Hubertovi Mütherichovi z 5./JG 54, o èemž svìdèí nejen znaky jednotek na pøídi, ale také symboly sestøelù na smìrovce a jméno Lilo pod kabinou. Poté, co letoun pøevzala III. Gruppe JG 77, se kromì znakù 8./JG 54 (komický pták) a II./JG 54 (lev aspernský) objevila na krytu motoru také kresba vlèí hlavy, znak III./JG 77. Zajímavým zpùsobem byla doplnìna kamufláž, kdy byly na boky trupu dostøíkány pruhy barev RLM 70 a RLM 71. Levé køidélko bylo vymìnìno a neneslo žluté doplòky. Fotografie rovnìž naznaèují, že letoun mohl na poèátku balkánské kampanì nést žlutý pruh na odtokové hranì vztlakových klapek. V dobì pøevzetí stroje III./JG 77 však již nebyl témìø vùbec zøetelný. Na této stranì návodu je stroj zobrazen s pravdìpodobnou podobou tohoto pruhu. Mütherich, eso se 4 sestøely, padl bìhem tažení v Rusku, když 9. záøí 1941 zahynul pøi nouzovém pøistání po boji se sovìtskými stíhaèkami. Od 6. srpna 1941 se mohl pochlubit Rytíøským køížem. 26 K Bf 109 E-7 Trop, 2./JG 27, Ain-el-Gazala airfield, Libya 1941 This aircraft was assigned to Lt. Werner Schroer, a member of 1st Staffel of JG 27 according to some sources. This seasoned pilot achieved 61 kills over Africa. The first of them was a Hurricane downed on April 19, 1941 over Tobruk, Libya. Later on, Schroer served as Gruppenadjutant of I./JG 27. The end of the war saw him as Geschwaderkommodore of JG with 114 kills to his credit (including 26 four-engined bombers). He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on October 21, 1942 and on April 19, 1945 he became a recipient of the Schwerten. Nevertheless this Emil belonged to 2nd Staffel of JG 27, in all probability, and Schroer never served within this part of JG 27. So, four kill marks on the rudder belonged to another, unidentified, pilot. The red spinner and red outline of the fuselage number are 2nd Staffel identifiers. Tento stroj bývá v nìkterých pramenech pøipisován Lt. Werneru Schroerovi, pøíslušníkovi 1. Staffel JG 27. Tento zkušený pilot dosáhl pod africkým nebem celkem 61 sestøelù, první z nich 19. dubna 1941 nad Tobrukem, kdy mu padl za obì Hurricane. Dne 21. øíjna 1942 byl vyznamenán Rytíøským køížem, k nìmuž 19. dubna 1945 pøibyly meèe. Zobrazený Emil však nejspíše patøil do 2. Staffel JG 27, kde Schroer v dobì dosažení ètvrtého sestøelu nepùsobil. Symboly sestøelù na smìrovce tedy patøí jinému, dosud neustanovenému pilotovi. 27 L Bf 109 E-7 Trop, 2./JG 27, Ail-el-Gazala airfield, Libya 1941 One of the most interesting tropical Emils is 'Black '. She wore a typical European camouflage scheme of RLM 71 and 02 on the uppersides and RLM 65 on the undersides. It was darkened with dark green (RLM 71 in all probability) stripes on the fuselage. This modification was done by ground personel of probably another unit in Europe as a similarly camouflaged Emil was photographed in JG service. Formerly all-yellow cowling was overpainted with the same colour on its uppersides. The older fuselage number was overpainted with RLM 02 and replaced by 'Black ' with thin red outline. Jedním z nejzajímavìji kamuflovaných tropických Emilù je èerná. Na africký kontinent se dostal v pùvodní tovární kamufláži tvoøené nepravidelnými poli barev RLM 71 a RLM 02 na horních plochách a barvou RLM 65 na plochách boèních a spodních. Pravdìpodobnì ještì v Evropì bylo toto kamuflážní schéma na bocích trupu ztmaveno støíkanými pruhy tmavé barvy, zøejmì RLM 71. Tuto úpravu s velkou pravdìpodobností provedl pozemní personál jiné jednotky než I./JG 27, podobnì zbarvený stroj létal u JG. Stejným odstínem byla zøejmì pøestøíkána horní a boèní èást pùvodnì žlutého krytu motoru. Starší èíselné oznaèení na trupu bylo pøestøíkáno barvou RLM 02 nahrazeno èernou. 51a S ?
