Karel Teige avant-garde books of the 20th century This is the last catalogue in the Vloemans special collection series, devoted to Czech avant-garde books of the first half of the 20th century. It is entirely devoted to Karel Teige (1900-1951), who, without doubt, was the most important figure of the Czech avant-garde movement in the interbellum. He was not only a critic, designer, theoretician, photomontagist and editor, but also the moving spirit of the Czech avant-garde of the twenties and thirties, the way Breton was in France, Van Doesburg in Holland, Marinetti in Italy, Janco in Rumania, Gropius in Germany, Peeters in Belgium, Kassak in Hungary. They all knew each other, whether through personal visits or the exchange of their periodicals. Teige was of great importance on the international scene also. In Timothy Benson s and Eva Forgác s preface to Between Worlds. A sourcebook of central European avant-gardes 1910-1930 (MIT Press 2002) they write: An anthology of this sort can never convey the full experience of a text s visual impact or its tactile existence, the physical medium in which it appears, whether a cheaply printed broadside or a luxuriously appointed volume. Yet perhaps in no other area were artists more sensitive to the expressive potential of such details as layout and design, illustrations and even paper used. Among the authors we consider, El Lissitzky, Lajos Kassák, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, and Karel Teige were most responsible for a complete transformation of the page, one that would be widely influential throughout the entire century. Teige s first graphic contribution appeared in Die Aktion, 1917 (when aged 17), and in 1920 Ivan Suk s book Lesy a ulice was published with three linocuts by Teige. Soon afterwards however, he understood that his artistic capabilities were too limited to become a famous artist and directed his attention towards typography, book design, prose and poetry, art criticism and architecture. In October 1920 the art association Devìtsil was founded, with Teige as the driving force, together with Adolf Hoffmeister (secretary) and Vladislav Vanèura (president) and in 1921 Teige produced his first book cover for Jaroslav Seifert s Mìsto v Slzách. 1922 saw the publication of the Zivot almanac (as a matter of fact the second year of the magazine with the same name), with a photomontage front cover by Teige, Krejcar, Feurstein and Šima. In the same year the Devìtsil almanac was published, with typography by Teige. From then on more and more books were published with title pages, colophons or publisher s devices designed by Teige, at first together with his friend Mrckvièka. In 1925 Jan Fromek founded the publishing company Odeon, which became the publication forum of Devìtsil, very often designed by Teige. From 1927-1931 Odeon published ReD, Teige famous magazine in his exceptionally beautiful typography with numerous contributions by his hand. Another groundbreaking publication was Nezval s book Abeceda, with Teige s typography incorporating Paspa s photographs of Milcá Mayerova dancing the alphabet (Praha, J. Otto, 1926). In the early years of the thirties Teige became interested in surrealism and started creating surrealist book covers, often with the use of photomontage. In 1934 he became a member of the Surrealistická skupina v ÈSR. Fine examples of Teige s surrealist book art are the two books by Nezval Praha s prsty dìsté and Zena v mnozném èisle, both published by Borový, Prague 1936. However, Teige was never invited to design an official publication, such as a memorial volume, an international exhibition catalogue, for example. (they were mostly commissioned to Sutnar). He had to work with little means, with material found in ordinary printing companies, and for small publishers who used cheap paper for their publications. It is both his limitation and his strength. This catalogue does not pretend to give a complete survey of all of Teige s printed work. It contains the books and periodicals we have in stock or have handled during the past 30 years. After 1938 in particular, as a communist, Teige had problems working and despite the communist takeover in 1948 that situation did not change, although it is likely that some covers and/or books designed by him were published anonymously. In 1935 Teige started to create collages, which he continued to do until his early death in 1951. John Vloemans

Contributions included Ozenfant and Jeanneret s Le Purisme and Architecture et purisme, the latter specially written for Zivot and published in French and the Czech translation. The conceptual influence of Le Corbusier s own periodical, l Esprit Nouveau, was also evident in Zivot II. Much of the illustrative material came directly from l Esprit Nouveau, as well as from Lissitzky and Ehrenburg s Vesch-Objet-Gegenstand. An excerpt from Ehrenburg s Und sie bewegt sich doch (And still she turns), Construction, shows the growing influence of Soviet constructivism on the Czech avant garde. The theme of new beauty in architecture, embraced the machine age ( Architecture of the trans-atlantic liners and the exotic Tibetan architecture ). Photography and film were discussed in Jean Epstein s Cinema and particularly Teige s essay Foto, kino, film, illustrated with stills featuring Fairbanks, Pickford and Chaplin, as well as with photographs by Man Ray. Included is Teige s published lecture The art of the present. Articles by the editor Krejcar, Die moderne Tschechische Kunst, and Made in America (about the culture of the machine agae). Other Devìtsil contributors include Šima, Honzl, Nezval, Voskovec, Schultz and Seifert, whose poetic manifesto, All the beauties of the world introduced and encapsulated the whole anthology.
