PEOPLE WHO ASK Annual Report 2016 Post Bellum, o. p. s. 2017 2

A word from the director We have not given up on our initial idea from 2001. On the contrary. The Memory of Nations is the backbone of our work, of all that we do. The Memory of Nations project was launched by journalists and historians. They wanted to record a few stories by veterans of World War II. They had a simple plan: to save the hours-long recordings for use in broadcast at some point. Then they realised that a narrated life story is like a gift. That is why right from the outset, in 2001, we decided to make these recordings accessible to others. The whole, unedited, original, undistorted file, usable by journalists, historians, students. And so an open database was created on the internet www.pametnaroda.cz (later also as www.memoryofnations.eu). We founded Post Bellum. We quickly realised that military veterans were not the only ones worth recording the stories of people who had survived Nazi or Soviet labour camps, former political prisoners, dissidents. We also wanted to hear the testimonies of those who shall we say stood on the other side of the barricades: State Security officers, informants, Communists And many others. We have not given up on our initial idea from 2001. On the contrary. The Memory of Nations is the backbone of our work, of all that we do. In May 2006 (we recetnyl celebrated our 10th anniversary) we created the radio documentary series Stories of the 20th Century. Apart from our documentary work, we publish books (one of the most successful is the comic book We Are Still At War), we create exhibitions (the most popular stood in Charles Square in Prague in May 2012 against the backdrop of a concentration camp), we have the mobile application Memory of Nations Sites, which takes you to the places where the stories unfolded, we hold the Memory of Nations Awards with live broadcasts by Czech Television and Slovak Television, we organise the educational project Stories of Our Neighbours throughout the Czech Republic, teaching pupils and students how to do the work we do. We show teachers how to integrate the stories into their classes. Memories are a wonderful piece of history, told in a different way than how the text books have it. Because when you narrate a story, you also share its values. We can hear testimonies of lofty causes that the narrator was willing to give his life for, if it came to it. That is something to think about. Dear readers of our annual report for 2016, before we plunge into all the numbers, characteristics, analyses, charts, assessments, and prospects, allow me to conclude this foreword with a response to one question what great wisdom do these thousands of stories actually provide? I have often been asked this, and I was taken by surprise by a similarly urgent question at one discussion. Some people say that if you don t know your history, you will be forced to repeat it. I don t know how history works exactly, whether it really repeats in some way, but in my opinion that isn t the real issue. The important thing is to act as if it could be repeated. Mikuláš Kroupa, director and founder of Post Bellum 2 3

Documentary work EX PEN S E S IN 20 1 6 CZK 4 983 9 1 0 ( E U R 19 0 0 0 0) We have collected the memories of historical witnesses since 2001. A few years later, in cooperation with Czech Radio and the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, we created a publicly accessible archive Memory of Nations. Today, it is one of the largest online collections of human memory in Europe. 4 5

As of 31 December 2016 the Memory of Nations collection comprises 6 411 witnesses. It contains thousands of recordings, tens of thousands of photos And more are added each year. We published 740 recordings in 2016 alone, the most in one year since the beginning of the project. The publication of one story, which takes several weeks to process, is the work of a number of people. Even so, we managed to publish two witness stories a day in 2016. This would not be possible without our numerous independent contractors documentarians (who make the interview), cameramen (who record it), editors (who process the recordings, prepare supplementary texts, and scan photographs), and our colleagues who do the proofreading and translate the stories into English. In 2016 there were 154 such people. We are active in all regions of the Czech Republic, but we also make interviews abroad. CONTENTS OF THE MEMORY OF NATIONS COLLECTION increase in 2016 total registered witnesses 835 6 411 scanned photographs and documents 10 141 44 074 published stories 740 3 451 registered researchers 704 5 713 documentary projects 6 53 We recorded 483 stories within the framework of the main documentary projects of Post Bellum. Another 81 entries to Memory of Nations were recorded and processed by children in our educational programme Stories of Our Neighbours. 49 witnesses were recorded and published in 2016 by our colleagues from Post Bellum in Slovakia. 127 of the stories this year come from other documentary projects organised in cooperation with foreign partners. This includes the input of our partner organisations both in the Czech Republic and in Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and Hungary. 6 7

Memory of Nations on video We use the unique Eye Direct technology and record the interview with two cameras at once. We record more and more witnesses on video in our film studio we now have 627 of them. We use the unique Eye Direct technology and record the interview with two cameras at once. In 2016 we recorded the stories of 232 witnesses during 358 sessions (for a total of 625 hours 34 minutes and 11 seconds of video). The largest group of stories in 2016 was from the so-called normalisation period (1970s) for the documentary series Stories of the 20 th Century, which will be broadcast by Czech Television in 2017. Apart from that we also recorded the stories of the Romani elite, of Czechoslovak artists, of forced labourers, and many others. Our main partner institution for audiovisual witness recordings is Czech Television. Our other documentary projects are The Experience of Totality, organised in collaboration with the Scout Institute, The Lives of Artists in Communist Czechoslovakia, supported by The Pudil Family Foundation, and Memory of Nations Sites, financed by Penta Investments. Our studio travelled all over the country, we were in Prague, Šumperk, Rožnov, and Hlučín. We also made a two-week trip to Israel (for the second time), bringing back another 15 stories of Holocaust survivors. Towards the end of the year we organised a successful crowdfunding campaign that allowed us to purchase equipment for three regional studios. We thus expect further expansion in 2017. 8 9

Memory of Nations has always been conceived as a memory archive for multiple institutions from the Czech Republic and abroad. SILESIA: THE MEMORY OF A MULTI-ETHNIC REGION Foreign cooperation Memory of Nations is a shared space for storing and publishing recordings of interviews with historical witnesses. In 2016 we continued to publish dozens of interviews with foreign witnesses. Our Slovak sister organisation Post Bellum SK has a large part in this. CONTENTS OF THE MEMORY OF NATIONS COLLECTION 31 documentary projects with the involvement of foreign partners 632 documented witnesses 13 cooperating countries (Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Georgia, Croatia, Lithuania, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine In 2016 we implemented the following projects with our foreign partners: THE 20TH CENTURY IN THE MEMORIES OF MEMBERS OF THE CZECH MINORITY IN CROATIA We managed to capture a sense of the Czech identity throughout the many historical events that transformed the Balkans. We also recorded the development of the Czech minority in the 20th century and the social and political situation in Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, which had a significant impact on the minority. Throughout the centuries, Silesia was part of various countries. This fact has been imprinted into its cultural and historical memory, has influenced the lives of its inhabitants, and has helped create the ethnic diversity that is typical of the region even today. WE ARE NOT ALONE: THE STORIES OF OUR MINORITIES In an effort to increase awareness of the minorities that live in the Czech Republic, we documented 15 members of ethnic minorities. The recorded interviews gave rise to the eponymous travelling photography exhibition. We will continue to record their stories in 2017. MEMORIES FOR THE FUTURE This project brought about a revival of relations between the current and the original inhabitants of villages in the Jeseníky area. Local inhabitants record the stories of deported Germans 20 witnesses in the Czech Republic and in Germany. The project continues in 2017. ROMANI MEMORY: THE MEMORIES OF ROMANIES IN A CENTRAL EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE This joint Czech-Slovak-Polish-Hungarian initiative supported by the International Visegrad Fund aims to record at least 30 life stories of Romanies who were socially and culturally active under Communism during 2016 and 2017. 10 11

Processing the recordings We also process recordings that were made many years ago, for instance, on VHS cassettes. Interviews with witnesses according to Memory of Nations methodology, which originate from outside the documentary projects of Post Bellum, must be processed and edited. We accept recordings that were often made many years ago and whose owners are willing to enter them into the Memory of Nations collection. They are often kept on old storage media, such as audio and VHS cassettes, or magnetic tapes. We manage the digitalisation and processing of these recordings for publication in the Memory of Nations collection. And of course, we also edit recordings that are already in digital format. Our greatest achievement in 2016 was the complete adaptation of the collection of Scout researcher Jitka Radkovičová, which comprises unique recordings of Czech and Slovak Jews living in Israel. We also edit the recordings obtained through our own projects. This mainly concerns the interviews conducted with witnesses by children participating in Stories of Our Neighbours. Also amateur recordings, entries in our documentary competition for Stories of the 20th Century. We are still processing the recordings obtained in our mobile audio studio in the streets of Czech and Moravian cities during the Memory of Nations promotional tour in 2014. Finally, we also edit recordings from partner projects, such as the memories of notable Scouts in cooperation with the Scout Institute. 12 13

Educational projects EXPENSES IN 2016 CZK 4 661 020 ( EUR 177 000) Our approach to eduction in Post Bellum differentiates between projects for primary and secondary schools. We Did Not Give Up. Educational workshops. Stories of Our Neighbours. All these projects somehow bring the witness stories into schools. In 2016 they began connecting, augmenting, and complementing each other. A complex educational system is evolving. 14 15

We teach pupils and students in one-day and long-term projects. We can avail ourselves of a database of witness contact information, an archive of audio and video recordings, studios, coordinators, professional instructors. In 2016 we also began offering educational programmes for teachers. In the following years we want to regionalise the projects as much as possible. We will support the creation of Memory of Nations branches, which will provide independent technical, personnel, and financial support to these educational activities in a given region. This prospect follows the overall direction of our efforts at Post Bellum in 2017. 16 17

We teach young people how to do documentary work. Stories of Our Neighbours In this project we teach fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds how to do documentary work. Their task is not just to find and interview a witness of some of the events of the twentieth century, but also to understand their story, to provide context in the form of a narrated radio or television report, and to introduce him or her to the public in an interesting way. With the help of their teachers and people from Post Bellum, the children digitalise photographs, search in archives and expert literature, learning the principles of journalism. The results of their work are then published on the project s website, in the radio, in regional media. The project culminates in a grand final presentation, which is also a neighbourhood party. The project gives young documentarians the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops, which guides them through the whole process. The children learn to conduct oral-history interviews, to comprehend the story in context and to process it into a media output. Participants who are making a radio report are offered a workshop with Czech Radio, young reporters with cameras attend a video workshop in our film studio. The participants develop a number of skills: they learn to understand the media world, they work in teams with their classmates and their teacher, they discover a new relationship with the oldest generation. They familiarise themselves with the history of the twentieth century in an innovative and in-depth way. The recorded witness stories are also stored in the Memory of Nations collection. We always organise the project in cooperation with the municipality where it takes place. In some regions the project is also supported by local libraries. PROJECT PARTICIPANTS IN 2016 1155 pupils 208 teachers 270 seniors 9 municipal libraries 38 municipalities The increase was significant in all aspects compared to 2015. participating municipalities participating pupils witness stories 2014 9 474 104 2015 25 942 219 2016 38 1155 270 18 19

We Did Not Give Up This online multimedia text book will guide you through the 20th century. In 2016 we published a new multimedia text book, We Did Not Give Up, available online at www.myjsmetonevzdali.cz, which follows up on the previous, outdated version on the eponymous DVD. The application presents each of the periods of modern Czechoslovak history from the perspective of historical witnesses. It uses a mosaic of short audio and video clips, photographs, and archival documents, which are placed in the context of each of the historical periods. The new version of the web portal has been expanded with more witness stories and hundreds of new materials: photographs and sounds from the archive of Czech Radio, witness audio and video clips. The multimedia text book has 17 new chapters; we have improved the graphics and optimised it for viewing on tablets and mobile phones. Number of unique visitors in 2016: 37 708 20 21

The workshops are suitable for Experiential workshops various target groups: primary school pupils, secondary school students, and adults. We offer schools, children s groups, and companies three types of experiential workshops inspired by real events and stories: The Day There Was Silence, Well This Won t Work, and Folk Won t Allow It. The participants enter the lives of witnesses of historical events. They play the role of the given character, but they can make their own decisions and think about how they themselves would react. During the four-hour workshop they and the other participants can experience the collectivisation of a South Bohemian village, the preparation of an anti-communist coup d état in 1949, or dissident life and samizdat literature in the 1980s. In 2016 we organised precisely 100 workshops, which were attended by 1992 people. Most of them took place in Prague, but some were also in Brno (12 ), Pardubice (21 ), and Karlovy Vary (3 ). 66 workshops The Day There Was Silence (primary school pupils) 22 workshops Well This Won t Work (secondary school students) 12 workshops Folk Won t Allow It (adults) The workshops are suitable for various target groups: primary school pupils, secondary school students, and adults. 22 23

Teacher education If we want to teach children something, we have to educate the eachers first. SUMMER SCHOOL In August 2016 we organised the first year of the Memory of Nations Summer School. Twenty-five participants primary school teachers spent four days at Paleta Education Centre in the foothills of Orlické Mountains. They took part in a series of lectures, talks, discussions, technical exercises, practical classes. These enabled them to get a grasp of the skills required for documentary work, the aspects of oral history, how to teach history, civic, ethical, and media education using specific stories etc. The summer school was followed up by a one-day seminar in Czech Radio, called Stories of Our Neighbours Documentary Work as a Pupils Project, which focused on the dramaturgical treatment of stories. The participants had the chance to cut and prepare their own audio report. Our teacher education programmes are accredited in the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports system of further education for teaching professionals. LECTURE SERIES AT UNIVERSITY FACULTIES OF EDUCATION In 2016 the Post Bellum educational programmes team also placed focus on the future generation of teachers. In collaboration with the Department of History and History Teaching of the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague, we launched a two-semester course called Memory and Faculty. The course provides documentary training, and students learn to process witnesses memories in their projects. We organised 10 Folk Won t Allow It workshops, expanded to include a methodological part, at the teaching faculties of Charles University and J. E. Purkyně University. 24 25

We prepare exhibitions, publish books and comics, organise talks, debates, film screenings. We create We send the stories on EX PEN S E S IN 20 1 6 CZK 4 28 4 752 ( E U R 163 0 0 0) a mobile app that takes you to the places where the stories happened. We organise trips to these places. We publish guides and maps. We shoot film and television documents. Every week for the past eleven years, you can listen to Stories of the 20th Century broadcast by Czech Radio. We confer the Memory of Nations Award at the National Theatre on 17 November with live television broadcast. 26 27

Witnesses tell us their life stories and experiences because they want them to be open to the public. They do not want their memories to end up in some archive, and they themselves often ask us to process their stories and pass them on in some way or other. Most frequently, the witnesses wish for young people to hear about they experienced. To avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. To be wary. To realise that freedom and democracy must be fought for even today. Before the actual recording, the witnesses sign an agreement that enables their story to be processed and used. Not just to be published in the Memory of Nations collection, but also for other purposes in education, the media, for films, exhibition, and even for literary or artistic adaptations. We seldom have witnesses who do not want the public to know their story (and if we do, we modify the license for the specific recording according to the witness s wishes). On the contrary, we usually find that the witness wants people to know about his or her story. 28 29

Stories of the 20th Century We tell the stories that were forgotten or were meant to be forgotten. Czech history has its heroes and its cowards, its dark times and its moments of greatness. You can have heard those words in the opening theme of the radio programme since May 2006. The documentary series by Adam Drda and Mikuláš Kroupa brings new perspectives on the previous century through the prism of people s memories. A new episode of Stories of the 20th Century is broadcast every week on Czech Radio Plus and Czech Radio Radiojournal. The programme draws on the extensive collection of memories in Memory of Nations and presents veterans of World War II, resistance fighters, Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, former political prisoners of Communism, dissidents, but also agents and informants of State Security, Communist functionaries, and so on. It also presents the testimonies of ordinary people who witnessed some of the important events of last century. The radio series has been complemented by three books so far: The Cruel Century, We Did Not Want to Live in Communism, and We Are Still At War. The most interesting episodes are available on CD from the Memory of Nations online shop. The programme s archive is available in iradio on the Czech Radio website. 30 31

Memory of Nations Sites Explore the stories of the places you pass by every day. The Memory of Nations Sites application is an interactive guide of places connected with events and stories from the twentieth century, designed for mobile phones and also accessible online. We place points in the map which, when clicked or zoomed in on, display a photograph and a description of the location together with the witness story. The app offers a diverse array of multimedia content texts, audio recordings of the story told by the actual person who witnessed or participated in the event, and contemporary photographs. In 2016 we augmented the app, adding new functions, mainly routes, which act as fully developed educational trails. We created digitally marked paths that guide you through the lives of prominent figures and everyday heroes, a border-crossing trail, the route of a death march, or the places where the events of Operation Anthropoid unfolded. The launch of fifteen of these new routes was marked by a summer holiday competition, Paths of Memory. APP USERS AND RATING IN 2016 total number of downloads was 33 824, which is an increase of 4 626 overall rating was 4.4 out of 5 15 new routes in 14 regions website views reached 70 907, which is an increase of 19 917 compared to the previous year number of users grew from 21 631 to 31 891, which is an increase of 10 260 32 33

In recognition of those who Memory of Nations Awards proved with their lives that honour, freedom, and human dignity are not empty words. We want to thank the people who showed courage when confronted with totalitarian power and who later allowed their stories to be entered into the Memory of Nations collection. We have conferred the awards on an annual basis since 2010, always on 17 November, at the National Theatre in Prague and broadcast live by Czech Television, Slovak Television, and Czech Radio. Over the course of the evening, we do more than just celebrate the courageous awardees, we also tell their stories. In 2016 there were five laureates from the Czech and Slovak Republics. The awards were given to people who had stood up to the Communist regime in their youth and had suffered long terms of imprisonment. We acknowledged the courage of Ludmila Váchalová, Jitka Malíková, Anton Tomík, Rudolf Dobiáš, and also by request of the colleagues and supporters of Memory of Nations Jiří Brady. In 2016 the stage direction and docudrama film direction was taken up by Jan Jirků and produced by Evolution Films. The television broadcast was directed by Michael Čech, and Martin Veselovský acted as the host of the evening. Matěj Kroupa performed on stage with his live orchestra, seconded by Kafka Band and the Slovak singer Katarzia. 280 000 viewers of the live broadcast by ČT 2 and the Slovak RTVS 2 50 000 impressions on Facebook 95 articles, invitations, and interviews in the media Each year s awards ceremony is given a unique treatment by its creative director variously in the style of film, theatre, documentary, or comic. In past years the Memory of Nations Awards were co-created by the likes of Jan Svěrák, Matěj Forman, Agnieszka Holland, Břetislav Rychlík, Václav Marhoul, Michael Čech. The ceremonies were previously presented by Marek Eben and Jakub Železný. 34 35

Stories of the 20th Century contest Record a story and win an iphone or CZK 50 000. We are trying to motivate people to explore their own family history with the Stories of the 20th Century competition. The contestants are divided into three age categories: pupils (13 15 years), students (16 18 years), and adult public (19+ years). They discover and record the life stories of members of the family, of friends or neighbours. In the four years that we have organised the competition, we have received nearly 500 completed stories from the more than 1400 applied contestants. There are two rounds of evaluation. The first selection is made by a jury comprising teachers and historians. The finalists are then assessed by a panel of journalists from leading Czech media. The winners (chosen from the 15 finalists) receive iphones and tickets to the Colours of Ostrava music festival or the Karlovy Vary film festival. The main prize is CZK 50 000. The winner of the Public Choice award is presented with a gift package from Scio valued at CZK 20 000. The competition is organised in cooperation with the Ostrava association PANT. 36 37

Exhibitions STORIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY This exhibition with illustrations by Vojtěch Šeda came about in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the eponymous radio programme. The exhibition depicts ten critical moments of the previous century together with the stories of witnesses who remember them. It was on display in the streets of Prague in May and in Hvězda Game Reserve during the Memory of Nations Run. STORIES OF OUR NEIGHBOURS Our colleagues from the education team at Post Bellum prepared four exhibitions this year. The series was called Stories of Our Neighbours, and it was based on witness stories recorded by children in the eponymous project. The stories are connected to the places where the children and the witnesses live. Last year such expositions were displayed in Prague 3, Prague 6, Prague 10, and Pardubice. A TRIBUTE TO VH The second big exhibition of 2016 was in memoriam of the 80th anniversary of the birth of Václav Havel, and we prepared it in cooperation with the Municipal District of Prague 6 and Václav Havel Library. Three- and five-metre exhibition towers with 96 photographs by Oldřich Škácha stood in the streets of Prague-Dejvice from October to December. We also made use of ten existing exhibitions in 2016. The comic book exhibition We Are Still at War: Stories of the 20th Century continues to enjoy considerable popularity last year it visited towns such as Jeseníky, Milevsko, Slaný, or Znojmo. EXHIBITIONS IN 2016 IN NUMBERS WE ARE NOT ALONE: THE STORIES OF OUR MINORITIES 17 expositions in total 7 new exhibitions 10 municipalities The exhibition tells about twelve people who found a new home in the Czech Republic. People who bear unusual names for our country, names that carry extraordinary stories. We opened the exhibition in December in the House of Ethnic Minorities in Prague. 38 39

Publications STORIES OF HEROES OF THE 20TH CENTURY This anthology of fascinating cases of victims of totalitarian terror in Czechoslovakia is a colourful mosaic that maps everything that the inhabitants of this country experienced in the twentieth century: the wars, the Nazi and Soviet occupations, the Communist labour camps, the show trials, but also the great acts of resistance against totalitarianism. The touching stories, which reflect the individual periods of Czech and Slovak history, are often far more thrilling than fictional thrillers. Published in cooperation with Plus / Albatros. EVERYONE HAS A STORY PAPELOTE NOTEBOOK An elegant retro notebook designed for Memory of Nations by Papelote Studio. The notebook contains blank and ruled pages, which are supplemented with historical photographs of witnesses. The hard cover is inscribed with quotes and excerpts from the life stories told by witnesses of the twentieth century in the Memory of Nations collection. THE HEYDRICH ASSASSINATION The book contains the stories of the actors of the event: not just the men who killed Heydrich, but other paratroopers as well, members of the domestic resistance, their families, and even Nazis and members of the Gestapo. Many of the testimonies come directly from people who are still alive (or from those who were able to record their stories in time). Published in cooperation with Argo. 40 41

Stories in the media We appeal to the public via social networks, nationwide and regional media, and our own communication channels: our website, regular newsletters for the Memory of Nations Friends Club, and a bi-annual bulletin. In 2016 we had 1485 relevant outputs in Czech media, 704 of which were in nationwide periodicals. 36 entries were in radio stations and 27 in television. The Memory of Nations Awards were watched by 280 000 viewers. The awards night was preceded by an outdoor advertising campaign, PR in the media, and activities on social networks. Spots on the Memory of Nations Facebook page garnered 50 000 impressions. The awards were popular with the press, which informed about the event 95 times during the autumn. Each year the Stories of Our Neighbours educational project expands to further cities and municipal districts. Our medialisation of the project is conducted in cooperation with regional media. In 2016 we recorded 248 media outputs relative to the project. In 2016 we began close cooperation with the news site Aktuálně.cz. Together with their journalists we created a series of texts about the Velvet Revolution and about Charter 77. We regularly prepare bespoke articles and videos in connection with specific witnesses or notable anniversaries. We also published a series of articles on Echo 24 (once per week). This cooperation culminated in the publication of Stories of the Heroes of the 20th Century. 42 43

Communicating on social networks Apart from traditional media cooperation, our website, newsletters, and bulletin, we also connect with the public via social networks. These help us introduce witness stories to tens of thousands of people, to get the memories to the public, or to attract attention to our projects. We also manage the Facebook page of the Stories of the 20th Century radio series (4 205 fans), the Stories of the 20th Century competition page (1 169 fans), and the Memory of Nations Friends Club group (876 members). FACEBOOK In 2016 we placed much greater emphasis on communicating via Facebook (both regularly and with targeted campaigns) than in previous years, and we focused more time and energy into doing this. Facebook helps us appeal to broader groups of people faster and with greater success than using traditional PR in the press. Contrarily, in some cases we used the social network to approach a narrowly defined group of people (for example, the Memory of Nations Friends Club). TWITTER @Pametnaroda has a total of 1 161 followers (an increase of 911 new followers in 2016) the people who follow us includes journalists, chief editors, and commentators of important Czech media 191 tweets added average reach of a tweet: 1 700 users reach of the most successful tweet: 12 360 users total number of fans: 14 636 (increase of 5 043 new fans in 2016) total number of posts: 300 average reach of our posts: 8 849 users most successful post in 2016: Věra Čáslavská (293 462 users reached) 44 45

Fundraising Two thirds of our activities are financed by donations from private foundations, companies, and individual benefactors. In 2016 there were almost 2 000 of them. We are grateful for every crown we receive. Such support also provides accountability. 48 49

The Memory of Nations Friends Memory of Nations Friends Club Club is the basis of income from individual donations. The community of people in the Memory of Nations Friends Club is built on more than just an interest in history, stories, or the Memory of Nations project it is united in its trust of Post Bellum and the shared values passed on to us by previous generations. Last year members of the Friends Club donated an average of CZK 200 000 per month to support the recording of witnesses. At least a token of our gratitude was provided by organising a total of twenty meetings and publishing two issues of the Memory of Nations Bulletin, which was delivered to the club members by post. STATISTICS FOR 2016 1 388 members of the Memory of Nations Friends Club 327 registered in 2016 CZK 2 397 048 sum of donations by members of the Memory of Nations Friends Club We prepared four screenings for Memory of Nations supporters, we met with them at three exhibitions, we celebrated the publication of two books together, set out on one walk through the city, and celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Stories of the 20th Century with the authors of the programme live in Czech Radio. During two weekend events, we visited Jáchymov with Zdeněk Mandrholec, a prisoner of Communism, and went for a walk through the Třebíč ghetto with the last surviving local Jewish witness of the Holocaust, Susana Urbanová. As in previous years, members of the Memory of Nations Friends Club were offered discounted tickets to the Memory of Nations Awards at the National Theatre in Prague. 50 51

Memory of Nations Collegium The Memory of Nations Collegium is a loose association of friends and partners of Post Bellum. It was established in order to connect notable people from Czech public, social, and business life who care about the legacy of the older generations. Members of the Memory of Nations Collegium are united in their respect for the people who stood up to the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. AIMS Members of the Collegium meet at regular intervals. In 2016 as in previous years, this took place before the Memory of Nations Awards ceremony; the guests were addressed by Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, former US Ambassador Andrew Schapiro, and Chairman of the Memory of Nations Collegium Jan Dobrovský, among others. In 2017 we plan to organise 12 public discussions (with the leaders of political parties / with prominent experts on current nationwide issues). We also intend to hold regular member-only meetings once a month at Koníček Club in Lucerna Palace in Prague. To encourage public discussion about freedom, democracy, and human rights, which the previous generations fought and died for. To pass on experience with our totalitarian past to the young generation via the memories of direct witnesses. To support the long-term recording of memories of past generations. 52 53

Memory of Nations Run We ran for all those who did not give up... On the second weekend in June we took to sports to celebrate ten years of Stories of the 20th Century broadcasts. The historically first Memory of Nations Run was attended by 480 runners, who ran symbolically for all those who did not give up the fight for freedom and human dignity. We ran so that we would not forget the lives of political prisoners, veterans of the war, Holocaust victims, dissidents, all those who fought for freedom. We used the proceeds to finance the recording and storage of more of their stories. The runners were inspired to endure by the Stories of the 20th Century exhibition on display along the route, with the memories of ten courageous people from the Memory of Nations collection and illustrations by Vojtěch Šeda. The Memory of Nations Run also offered quizzes, competitions, unusual sports activities, assault courses for younger visitors, and the programme of the parallel Hvězda for Heroes festival, organised by the Municipal District of Prague 6. We were supported by a number of celebrities, patrons of the run: Olympic athletes Vavřinec Hradílek and Eva Samková, actresses Lenka Krobotová, Petra Nesvačilová, and Linda Rybová, sisters Aňa, Ester, and Lela Geisler, journalist Jindřich Šídlo, businessman Petr Pudil, and other supporters of Post Bellum. 480 runners for individual and relay 50 000 impressions on Facebook 95 articles, invitations, and interviews in the press CZK 208 514 obtained in donations 54 55

Veterans Day On 11 November people from all over the world honour the memory of military veterans and symbolically wear a poppy flower on their lapel. Czechs had the opportunity to honour their veterans, procure a poppy, and contribute to the documentation and preservation of memories of military veterans in Memory of Nations on 11 November 2016, Veterans Day, in 17 places in Prague and other cities. In the first year of the Veterans Day collection, people donated CZK 86 236. Over 800 military veterans told their stories for Memory of Nations. In 2016 some 700 former soldiers of World War II lived in the Czech Republic, with a further 20 000 military veterans from newer conflicts. We organise a public charitable collection on Veterans Day because we do not want their unique lives and experience to be forgotten. 56 57
