Dietrich von Hildebrand, 1889-1977
Vita - Husserl In the history of philosophy, the name of Dietrich von Hildebrand is associated with the early phase of the phenomenological movement. Von Hildebrand was an important member of the circle of students that, after reading Logical Investigations, decided to study with Edmund Husserl in Göttingen. Husserl considered the young von Hildebrand one of his best students, directed his dissertation, and wrote an enthusiastic evaluation of it.
Vita - Reinach, Scheler However, on von Hildebrand s own testimony, his most important philosophical teacher was Husserl s assistant Adolf Reinach. An invaluable source of inspiration, in this early stage of his philosophical development, was for von Hildebrand his older friend Max Scheler. Scheler, who at the time had no official teaching position, influenced many of the students around Husserl by his unofficial lectures and seminars.
Conversion Being raised in a nominally protestant but not practicing family, in 1914 von Hildebrand converted to Catholicism. The conversion marked not only a profound change in von Hildebrand s life. It also bare fruits which, in form of numerous religious and spiritual writings, gave soon their author the stature of one of the leading catholic intellectuals of his time.
the greatest obstacle for National Socialism in Austria Besides being a phenomenologist and a catholic religious writer, von Hildebrand was also one of the most outspoken opponents of the Nazi ideology in Germany and later in Austria. Being considered by Franz von Papen, the German Ambassador to Austria of the time, the greatest obstacle for National Socialism in Austria, von Hildebrand and his family, after the Anschluss in 1938, had to flee Vienna under very dramatic circumstances. After very adventurous period full of provisory living, continuous hiding, and dangerous escapes, the von Hildebrands eventually succeeded to flee Europe. In 1940, they settled in New York City, where von Hildebrand taught at Fordham University until 1960.
