Airfield Mikulovice WA V E 2 16 THE DIRECTIVE FOR FLYING AT JESENIKY MOUNTAIN WAVE Wrote : P. Hanáèek, J. Ivanová, 6/8/3 Approved by : Vít Reich, head of Aeroklub Jeseník, 6/9/4 Translated by : Tomáš Mezera, 6/1/16 Up dating: 1/1/216 (Vlasta Lasovská) The directive for flying at Jeseniky mountain wave page 1 of 3

I. General information This directive is edited to provided flights of gliders at Jeseniky mountain w Mikulovice. All crew of gliders and aerotowing aircrafts performing flights to mountain wave from airfield Mikulovice must be familiar with this document. 1. Mountain wave of the 1st type - wall and the 1st rotor. 2. Mountain wave of the 2nd type - sky covered by low level clouds is better than 6, but worse than 4 octas, sky clear area is II. Crew limitation Mountain wave of the 1st type is usable for pilots which accomplished task 2 by syllabus AK-PL. Pilots must have two ways radio contact with dispetcher AFIS LKMI on frequency 123,5 MHz. Radio contact between gliders up on frequency 13,925 MHz. Mountain wave of the 2nd type is usable only for pilots with valid instrument rating and for approved gliders equipped for flying at clouds. III. Usable area for flying TRA 51 is used above all for mountain wave flying, this area is cleared of airways. It is possible to use other areas by agreement with dispetcher AFIS LKMI or by ATC only. IV. Procedures in the case of weather change 1. immediately perform descent and land at LKMI. 2. - immediately perform descent below clouds and land at airfield, or divert on emergency landing strips. 3. Icing leave the level of icing, descent or climb by taking advantage of area with a stronger climbing. 4. Increase of medium cloudiness above 6 octas at area from the first wave till downwind move to the first wave area and perform descent through sky clear area. 5. Increase of medium cloudiness above 6 octas everywhere inclusive of counterwind of mountains perform descent below the clouds. 6. Significant increase of wind and change its direction towards runway LKMI value this situation and if necessary perform safety landing into terrain or by dispetcher AFIS instructions.

V. Common rules and recommendations 1. The aerotowing of gliders is performed into areas of presumed climbings at situation of the 1st type of wave, or at the front of rotor at situation of the 2nd type of wave. Minimum altitude of releasing must be enough for safe return to airfield LKMI! Glider pilot is responsible for place and altitude of releasing. 2. Glider pilot performs circuit and budget for landing from higher heigh to finish the 4th turn of circuit LKMI at 57 m MSL, be aware of possible change of wind direction near the ground by influence of rotor flowing. The landing must be performed till sunset. 3. The circuit cannot be too great due to near state boarder with Poland and possibility of a strong wind. 4. Glider must be equipped with reliable radiostation and turn indicator. Two ways radio communication of pilot and AFIS is mandatory during whole flight. 5. Glider must be equipped of oxygen installation during flights above altitude 442m MSL. 6. Entry into clouds is forbidden! 7. We recommend to anchor regularly glider after emergency landing into terrain and to inform about this immediately dispetcher AFIS. When you land at Poland, contact dispetcher AFIS and proceed by his instruction. Take actual phone numbers before flight at dispetcher AFIS! 8. At the beginning of flight operation, head of aeroclub or himself delegated person must contact ATS due to that airfield LKMI is located at ADIZ and also activate flying area. This directive and their articles are obligatory for every pilot flying at mountain wave of Jeseníky, performing this flight from LKMI. Glider pilot must be familiar with this directive before his first solo flight into mountain wave, must perform ground preparation due to task 2a by syllabus AK-PL, both led by head of aeroclub or himself delegated flight instructor. Other things of flight operation are directive by P-1, L-2, airfield manual LKMI and other rules. THE DIRECTIVE FOR FLYING AT JESENIKY MOUNTAIN WAVE Appendix E THE CONTENTS OF GROUND PREPARATION by task 2a of glider training syllabus AK-PL 1. Meteorological conditions for rising of wave and rotor flowing behind Jeseníky mountains By present time experiencies and observing the good wave conditions occured within southwestern flowing at Jeseniky, ± 2 degrees from this main direction. Minimum wind speed is 8 m/s on the ridge of Hruby Jesenik (meteo station at Serak). Suitable situations are : 1) Short interval occured at the beginning of frontal disorder, which moves from west to east through medium Europe. This interval takes just a few hours and its advantage depends on readiness of flying staff. Increased humidity with height before the front pass gets worse usable wave flowing (too much clouds, orientation at the air, pilots experience, material background). In the case of high altitude wind change with warm or ocluded front incoming the flowing southwestern layer is decreased and the wave flowing is changed into rotor flowing with a great turbulence and low level wind shear. Return to airfield can be hazardous for unexperienced pilots. 2) The best wave situation are characterized by expressive anticyclone with its position from Black Sea to eastern part of Scandinavia with a deep trough of low pressure between Spain and Island. This situation maintains suitable southern or southwestern flowing for many days. It occurs often at autumn or spring months, sometimes at winter during warming and is significant by few amount of clouds with a good visibility. We can determinate the layers with altocumulus clouds, which are significant marks of wave flowing, from temperature gradients and dew points. If we have temperature gradients from crosswind part of mountains, we can forecast tendention of weather evolution and the type of clouds on the ridge. This situation is the most suitable for accomplished of FAI E and F altitude conditions, are significant with a good orientation possibilities and are sutable for common pilots. The directive for flying at Jeseniky mountain wave - Appendix E page 1 of 4

2. The rules for wave flowing flying The good wave conditions are occured behind mountains Rychlebske hory, Kralicky Sneznik and the main ridge of Jeseniky between peaks Serak, Keprnik, Cervena Hora, Svycarna and Praded. This ridge has average exceed 1 m and the first rotor is 16 km far away from airfield, the second one 8 km and the third one is above southern treshold of runway at LKMI. The first wave is often occured at the line Javornik-Zulova-Vapenna-Domasov-Karlova Studanka-Mala Moravka. Entry into this wave is standart, aerotow into area Bukovice- Domasov, on the place of the first rotor, altitude of releasing depends on situation and experience of pilot between 14 and 16 m MSL. The altitude and the exact place of releasing must be agree with aerotow pilot before take off. For flights for FAI E or F conditions we recommend min. altitude 142 m, for other flights 162 m MSL. Flying into rotor clouds is strictly prohibited! Aircraft can release the glider in the area of positive climbing on crosswind side of rotor at safe altitude. The rotors move regulary in the direction of flowing till hundreds of meters, depend on change of air flowing speed. In the case of glider bring down behind the rotor, pilot must perform landing on emergency strips at Jesenik, Bukovice, Domasov, Zulova or Javornik. Do not try to get back to airfield if you have lower altitude than 112 m MSL above Jesenik city. After reaching top of rotor the climbing of glider is lower, there is necessary to fly at the front of Altocumulus line and still to move toward the wind with higher altitude. To enter the clouds is prohibited! In the case that the third wave occured above the airfield there is possible to release the glider in the area of airfield at safe altitude for return. At altitude from 242 m to 342 m MSL is possible to make cross flight into area of the first wave. To fly through clouds of rotors is not allowed, you must maintain VFR conditions. Some often area of stable climbings is Domasov, this area is most sutable for beginning of wave flight, so for safe return to airfield too. Average climbings for FAI conditions : FAI E gold 3 m : 1-1,5 m/s from 75min to 11min, altitude of releasing 142m MSL FAI F diamond 5m :,8-1,5 m/s from 7min to 135min, altitude of releasing 142m MSL Wave flowing is usable to cross flights too with boarder and ATC areas limitations. Cross flying is suitable for experienced pilots with enough equipped gliders at stable meteo conditions. Typical wind average from ten wave situations : Pradìd 62 122 24 o / 15 25 o / 15 Praha 2 122 m 2 o / 6 22 o / 6 15 m 27 o / 21 235 o / 6 3 m 265 o / 21 255 o / 2 55 m 24 o / 3 255 o / 22 7 m 235 o / 3 26 o / 3 9 m 24 o / 34 26 o / 35 The directive for flying at Jeseniky mountain wave - Appendix E page 2 of 4

3. The rules for rotor flowing flying The area for rotor flying is the same as for wave flying. Most strong area is between Javornik-Zulova-Domasov-Vidly-Karlova Studanka-Mala Moravka. This situation is characterized by tube clouds CuFr at from 4 to 6 octas, at regular lines at direction 12-31 degrees upright to wind, with significant rotary moving, sometimes with flate basis, without climbing below them. Rotor clouds depends on humidity gradient of air mass with height. Rotor flowing is not suitable for flying at significant dry air mass. The most sutable situation is when the ridge of mountains is at Föhn clouds, which flew into valley and disappeared at altitude 12 m MSL. The turbulence within aerotow is light, significant descending is on the downwind side of rotors. Climbing begins on the first rotor at altitude 82 12 m MSL, glider pilot can perform the flight at altitude 14 16 m MSL, it depends on specific situation and pilots experience. The altitude and the exact place of releasing must be agree with aerotow pilot before take off. Recommended altitude for releasing is 142 m MSL as a minimum. The most intesive climbings are located at line Vidly Zulova. There is possible to climb to 342 m MSL. The rate of climb decreases with height rapidly. The break within Föhn wall and the first rotor is 4 8 km. To find the climbings behind the first rotor at altitude 122 m MSL or less is not safe. We recommend to fly only at area Vidly Javornik due to mountains terrain, there is possible to use good emergency landing strips at any case of bad change of weather, specially decreasing of cloud base below 122 m MSL. Flying into rotor clouds is strictly prohibited too. Minimal horizontal separation from rotor clouds is 1 m and pilot must be aware of possibility of rotor jump toward the wind. 4. The aerotowing The direction of runway at airfield Mikulovice is ideal, because it is at common wind directions. Departures are suitable nor for less experienced pilots. The turbulence is light until the first rotor. The altitude and the exact place of releasing must be agree with aerotow pilot before take off. For glider pilots which are the first time at wave, we recommend releasing at minimum altitude 142 m MSL on crosswind side of the first rotor at positive climbing area. For flights for FAI E or F conditions we recommend min. altitude 142 m, for other flights 162 m MSL. We do not recommend to aerotow pilots to fly at distance less than 3 km from mountain ridge. Departure we recommend climb to area Domasov at heading 22 27 degerees after take off. We recommend to avoid city of Jesenik and Jesenik spa due to noise abantment, pilots can fly above Rejviz or Lipova at altitude 12 m MSL. Pilots must fly upright to rotors, do not enter the clouds. Average time of aerotowing flight into area of Domasov is 15 2 minutes due to wind strenght. The directive for flying at Jeseniky mountain wave - Appendix E page 3 of 4

5. Emergency procedures When clouds pour together before the first rotor and the clouds behind the first rotor increase more than 6 octas, the pilot must perform immediately descent through sky clear area. Depending on base of rotor clouds the pilots must perform forced landing on emergency landing strips or on the airfield. When the glider is equipped with oxygen system and the pressure of oxygen decreased below 3 ATM or some oxygen system failure occured or the pilot feels the symptoms of high altitude illness, the pilot must immediately leave the present altitude a descent to minimaly 442 m MSL. When pilot has navigation failure (VMC conditions loss), he must depart from area of Domasov at minimum altitude 342 m MSL with heading 33-2 degrees, speed 8 kmph. Check the base of clouds at AFID dispetcher and if it is not less 142 m MSL, during 2 minutes of flight form ridge to begin descending through clouds. In the case that cloud base is less than 142 m MSL with total overcast we recommend leave the glider on parachute. The pilot is full responsible for this solution. 6. Conclusion The flying behind the Jeseniky mountains is very safe with maintaining of the rules at this directive. Wave flowing flying is most suitable for obtaining of FAI gold and within very good meteo situation FAI diamond condition. In the case of activating if special czechopoland area these flying is most sutable for a long distance croos flights above Jeseniky. Rychlebske hory, Sovi hory and Krkonose.
