Students on the graduate degree can choose one of four specialisations: physical geography, climatology and hydrology, cartography with geoinformatics and remote sensing, and regional geography with regional development. The study of the future secondary teachers program combines Geography with Mathematics, Biology, Geology, History and English. Besides the mentioned there is possible to study 3 years bachleor study Applied geography and Mathematics The PhD students are orientad on physical geography, cartography and geoinformatics, and regional geography with regional development. In the field of grant research 11 grant projects have been elaborated at the department. The research program is chiefly focused on the following problems: the reconstruction of the climate and scenarios of climatic changes; the application of statistical methods in the analysis of time series; microclimate and topoclimate; climate of polar regions; the problems of atmospheric pollution; precipitation-runoff relation in selected watersheds; characterization of ecosystems according to their animal component, problems of the contemporary social and economic transformation of the Czech Republic; regional geographic studies of small territories; the preparation of data and the GIS management of chosen regions and their application to specific problems; the theory and methods of teaching geography. Information about grants and other scientific projects, soluted on the department, about international co-operation and co-operation with other Czech and foreign institutions are showed in next parts of this yearbook. Within the Department of Geography the Laboratory of Geoinformatics and Cartography is active in the field of GIS and remote sensing being the best equipped laboratory in the Moravian region. The Laboratory has many international co-operation contacts. Department of Geology and Paleontology TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The year 2001 was, similarly to the preceding ones, rich in various professional events in which the members of the Department actively participated or which were organized by them. At the very beginning of the year in February Š. Hladilová actively participated at the conference Paleontology at the beginning of the new millennium in Bratislava. In March R. Brzobohatý presented an invited lecture at the meeting of the Working group Environments and Ecosystem Dynamics of the Eurasian Neogene in Graz. In April, the Department organized the 13th Conference on Upper Tertiary (Š. Hladilová, N. Doláková, R. Brzobohatý). Two members of the Department (R. Přichystal, R. Melichar) attended the 6th Meeting of the Czech Tectonic Studies Group in Donovaly - Nízké Tatry and J. Leichmann participated in the 11th European Union of Geosciences Conference in Strassburg. In May the course of geological and hydrogeological mapping, in the cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey, took place in the surroundings of Svratouch. In June R. Brzobohatý and M. Slobodník left nearly for a month for Belgium. R. Brzobohatý stayed at Institut royal des sciences naturelles de Belgique, Bruxelles, where he studied Tertiary otoliths. M. Slobodník studied the fluid systems at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. R. Musil attended XI. Bilzingsleben-Kolloquium at the Friedrich Schiller Universität in Jena. Several members of the Department (Š. Hladilová, N. Doláková, R. Musil, J. Kalvoda) were engaged in the Second paleontological seminar in Prague. An important event was the succesful defence of two PhD theses - Quantitative and qualitative changes of the contaminants in the subsurface - Chlorinated ethenes (T. Kuchovský - supervisor V. Pelikán) and Microtectonics and stratigraphy of the Paleozoic limestones within the SW Brunovistulian Margin (P. Špaček - supervisor J. Kalvoda). At the end of August J. Kalvoda attended the international conference Paleoforams in Ankara and S. Nehyba and PhD student L. Kvitkova attended the 21st IAF (international Association of Sedimentologists) Meeting in Davos. A series of important conferences was held in the course of September. Š. Hladilová participated in the conference "Carpathians Palaeogeography and Geodynamics: A Multidisciplinary Approach" in Krakow and in field workshop "Continental versus Marine Badenian" in Bratislava. A. Přichystal was engaged in the 4th Workshop of the IGCP/UNESCO Project No. 442 "Raw materials of the Neolithic Aeneolithic polished stone artefacts: their migration paths in Europe", in northern Italy. J. Leichmann and PhD students K. Zachovalová and F. Jelínek attended the international conference MinPet in Wien and J. Leichmann Cathodoluminiscence conference in Freiberg. In October J. Leichmann was engaged in the conference "Orogeny and cratonic response on the margins of Baltica" in Ankara and in conference "P and F in higly fractionated granites" in Peršlag. In November the Department organized the traditional international conference "Quaternary 2001" which was attended by more than 50 specialists from the Central Europe. At the end of the year A. Přichystal left for a month for geological mapping of the city Leon in Nicaragua. During his stay he attended the conference "Fallas Geológicas en Managua y Amenaza Sísmica en Occidente de Nicaragua, Managua, Nicaragua. Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The activities of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry were focused above all the educational tasks on solution of objectives issuing from participation in grant projects and international cooperation in 2001. In the scientific research field, the forefront interest of the department lay in: the Project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact contact of Variscides and Alpides (Z. Losos, M Novák, M. Suk, J. Zeman,); Project CEZ J07/98: Structuralfunctional relationships of biomolecules and their role in metabolism (J. Zeman); the International Geological Correlation Program No. 405 ( Anthropogenic Impact of Weathering Processes - leaders P. Sulovský, J. Zeman) and in the cooperation with universities and other scientific institutions in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and USA. The latter expressed itself above all by publications and organization of joint field excursions. The members of the department have also participated in several grant projects bestowed by the Grant Agency of Czech Republic, Grant Agency of the Ministry of Environment, Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic and Grant Agency of the Ministry of Culture. The research on the Department was focused on several fields. The strong interest was concentrated on geochemical, mineralogical and petrological research of weathering processes - both by laboratory experiments and field-testing. The former involved test modeling of dissolution of silicates (J. Faimon) and carbonates (J. Zeman) and precipitation of dissolved species, the latter included monitoring of processes leading to destruction of architectural artefacts, mortars (M. Gregerová) and natural monuments - caves (M. Gregerová, J. Zeman, J. Štelcl, J. Faimon) including speleotherapy (J. Štelcl, J. Faimon). Especially on environmental problems are focused research topics as long term water-rock-atmosphere interaction, surface geochemical processes modeling, sorption and desorption of heavy metals on rock and minerals, environmental impact of geological processes and human activity, partly solved within Project of Ministry of Environment VaV/630/3/00: Ecological and geological (Ecogeological) research of pollutant migration in cooperation wit Czech Geological Survey in Brno (J. Zeman). The research in mineralogy and petrology was focused particularly on rocks and minerals occurring on the territory of the Bohemian Massif and West-Carpathians: ore occurrences in the Jeseníky Mts. - B. Fojt, V. Vávra, Z. Losos; mineral assemblages in rocks of the Žulová massif - Z. Losos and of the Třebíč durbachite massif P. Sulovský, V. Vávra; minerals of granitic pegmatites from the Moldanubicum - M. Novák, J. Staněk; leucocratic granitic rocks with tourmaline and dumortierite - M. Novák; mafic and ultramafic rocks from the eastern part of the Bohemian massif - M. Suk; clastic sediments of the Drahany Hights J. Kotková, M. Novák, P. Sulovský; uranium mineralization - P. Sulovský and environmental consequences of its mining - J. Zeman. Much of our work was supported by the instrumentation available at the department e.g., X-ray diffractometer, electron microprobe (EDS, WDS), optical microscopy laboratory, chemical laboratory with the new AAS instrument Pye Unicam and their background - excellent sample preparation laboratory. The library of department obtains an outstanding donation of dr. E. Slánsky from the University of the New South Wales, Sydney. The department has also been responsible for the popularization of science, especially in cooperation with the Moravian Museum, Brno and by contributions to the journals for mineral collectors - Mineral, issued in Brno, Bulletin of Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, National Museum, Prague and organizing field trip in cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey. The long-lasting collaboration with geological organizations and other institutions, based in particular on laboratory instrumentation of the department and external education, has found an important place among the activities of the department.
