Section Earth Sciences The section Earth Sciences is constituted by 3 departments and one institute: Department of Geography Department of Geology and Paleontology Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry Institute of Physics of the Earth, with total strenght of 39 pedagogical and scientific workers, 12 technical workers, about 430 bachleor and master students and 100 PhD students. Functioning of the section is administrated by quaternary section committee leaded by the section head. CONSTITUTION OF THE SECTION COMMITTEE Prof. RNDr. Pavel Prošek, CSc. section head (to 31.5. 2002) Doc. Josef Zeman, CSc. Section head (from 1.6. 2002) Doc. RNDr. Jiří Kalvoda, CSc. head of Dept. of Geology and Paleontology Prof. RNDr. Milan Novák, CSc. head of Dept. of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry RNDr. Švancara, CSc. head of Institute of Physics of the Earth. Guarantors of study programmes also participate in the section committee work when necessary. Other information focused on the pedagogical and publication activities and on the scientific and operating performance is concentrated in the next desription of the section units..

Department of Geology and Paleontology TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The scientific activities of the Department of Geology and Paleontology were carried out in several working teams. In the sedimentology and paleontology of the Tertiary the studies were concentrated on the reedition of the Karpatian Stratotype and relicts of Miocene sediments on the eastern margin of the Bohemian, sequence stratigraphy of the Carpathian Foredeep as well as on the Miocene paleontology and palynology (R. Brzobohatý, N. Doláková, Š. Hladilová, S. Nehyba). In the Paleozic the studies were concentrated on the paleobiogeography and tectonostratigraphic development and correlation of the Variscan Terranes in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Minor and Central, Cambrian sediments in SE Moravia and Permian sediments in the Boskovice Furrow and Devonian - Carboniferous biostratigraphy and tectonics (J. Kalvoda, J. Leichmann, S. Nehyba, R. Melichar) as well as geochemical and tectonic modelling of the fluid migration in the Palaeozoic of the Moravo-Silesian region ( M.Slobodník). The study of crystalline rocks were concentrated on the pebbles in Culm conglomerates, inner structure of feldspars and crystalline rocks of the Upper Moravia Ravine and volcanism of the Vrbno Group (J. Leichmann, A. Přichystal). Most of the topics of the scientific researches were solved within the grant project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact contact of Variscides and Alpides (J. Kalvoda, J. Leichmann, Š. Hladilová, S. Nehyba, A. Přichystal). The Quartenary researches were aimed at raw materials of artefacts, evolutionary trends in Quarternary mammals and Quartenary of the Mokrá Plateau (A. Přichystal, R. Musil). Hydrogeological studies included cooperation with the Brno City Municipality in compilation of the extensive project of subsurface contamination in the Brno City for the purposes of the Territorial City Plan and compilation of the Information system of the mineral water (localities Teplice, Ondrášov). The mentioned studies were supported by numerous grant projects, presented in several domestic and international conferences and published in many scientific papers (see below). Beside the active participation the members of the department organized several conferences - 8. Quaternary 2002, Brno 22.11.2002, 5 th Workshop of the IGCP/UNESCO Project No. 442 Raw materials of the Neolithic/Aeneolithic polished stone artefacts: their migration paths in Europe, Bratislava Šlapanice u Brna, 1 st 5 th September 2002, 5 th workshop Natural Science Methods in Archaeology and Anthropology, Brno, 22 nd 24 th May 2002, Short course of trace fossils study ( in cooperation with UP Olomouc and Jagellonian University, Cracow) - Olomouc 10-12.4.2002 and Moravian-Silesian Paleozoics 2002. Organizer A. Prichystal, cooperation with Czech geological Service. February 12 th. The department has been also involved in the popularization of science. A Prichystal participated in a series of lectures Geological hazards in the Moravian Museum, Brno In the scientific research field, the forefront interest of the department lay in the grant project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact contact of Variscides and Alpides. Some of the broad themes of the project were solved together with the members of the Department of Geochemistry, Petrology and Mineralogy (M. Novák, Z. Losos, J. Zeman) and similar approach was adopted also in some other grant projects. The fact that several working teams have worked across the boundaries of the departments was one of the reasons that after long discussions both Department of Geology and Paleontology and Department of Geochemistry, Petrology and Mineralogy merged in the Institute of Geological Sciences created from January 1st 2003. In the educational sphere the major changes were connected with the transition to the European credit system and three level teaching bachelor magister PhD. An important event was Student geological conference organized by PhD students of both the Department of Geology and Paleontology and Department of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology in February. More than 40 students presented their contributions and participated in a field trip. STRUCTURE OF PERSONNEL Head: Jiří Kalvoda (Assoc. Prof., RNDr., CSc.) Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry TEACHING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The activities of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry in 2002 were focused both on the educational tasks and on solution of objectives issuing from participation in grant projects and international cooperation. In the scientific research field, the forefront interest of the department lay in: the Project CEZ J07/98: Geological processes and their environmental impact contact of Variscides and Alpides (Z. Losos, M Novák, M. Suk, J. Zeman,); Project CEZ J07/98: Structural-functional relationships of biomolecules and their role in metabolism (J. Zeman); the International Geological Correlation Program No. 405 ( Anthropogenic Impact of Weathering Processes - leaders P. Sulovský, J. Zeman) and in the cooperation with universities and other scientific institutions in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and USA. The latter expressed itself above all by publications and organization of joint field excursions. The members of the department have also participated in several grant projects bestowed by the Grant Agency of Czech Republic, Grant Agency of the Ministry of Environment, Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic and Grant Agency of the Ministry of Culture. The research at the Department was focused on several fields. The strong interest was concentrated on geochemical, mineralogical and petrological research of weathering processes - both by laboratory experiments and field-testing. The former involved test modeling of dissolution of silicates (J. Faimon) and carbonates (J. Zeman) and precipitation of dissolved species, the latter included monitoring of processes leading to destruction of architectural artefacts, mortars (M. Gregerová) and natural monuments - caves (M. Gregerová, J. Zeman, J. Štelcl, J. Faimon) including speleotherapy (J. Štelcl, J. Faimon). Especially on environmental problems are focused research topics as long term water-rock-atmosphere interaction, surface geochemical processes modeling, sorption and desorption of heavy metals on rock and minerals, environmental impact of geological processes and human activity, partly solved within Project of Ministry of Environment VaV/630/3/00: Ecological and geological (Ecogeological) research of pollutant migration in cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey in Brno (J. Zeman). The research in mineralogy and petrology was focused particularly on rocks and minerals occurring on the territory of the Bohemian Massif and the Western Carpathians: ore occurrences in the Jeseníky Mts. - B. Fojt, V. Vávra, Z. Losos; mineral assemblages in rocks of the Žulová massif - Z. Losos - and of the Třebíč durbachite massif P. Sulovský, V. Vávra; minerals of granitic pegmatites from the Moldanubicum - M. Novák, J. Staněk; leucocratic granitic rocks with tourmaline and dumortierite - M. Novák; mafic and ultramafic rocks from the eastern part of the Bohemian massif - M. Suk; clastic sediments of the Drahany Uplands and the crystalline rocks therein J. Kotková, M. Novák, P. Sulovský; uranium mineralization (P. Sulovský) and environmental consequences of its mining - J. Zeman. Much of our work was supported by the instrumentation available at the department e.g., X-ray diffractometer, electron microprobe (EDS, WDS), optical microscopy laboratory, chemical laboratory with the new AAS instrument Pye Unicam and their background - sample preparation laboratory. The department has also been responsible for the popularization of science, especially in cooperation with the Moravian Museum, Brno and by contributions to the journals for mineral collectors - Mineral, issued in Brno, Bulletin of Department of Mineralogy and Petrology, National Museum, Prague and organizing field trips in cooperation with the Czech Geological Survey. The long-lasting collaboration with geological organizations and other institutions, based in particular on laboratory instrumentation of the department and external education, has found an important place among the activities of the department. Department of Geography PEDAGOGICAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES The Department of Geography belongs with its 20 members and with number of students to the biggest departments of the faculty. Students on the graduate degree can chose one of four specialisations: physical geography, climatology and hydrology, cartography with geoinformatics and remote sensing, and regional geography with regional development. The study of the future secondary teachers program combines Geography with Mathematics, Biology, Geology, History and English. Besides the mentioned there is possible to study 3 years bachleor study Applied geography and Mathematics The PhD students are orientad on physical geography, cartography and geoinformatics, and regional geography with regional development. In correspondebnce with inovation and changes in study strcture at the Faculty of Science basic changes have been prepared at the geography deparment in this year. Such innovation allows broader both vertical and horizontal linkage to other study programes at the Faculty. In the field of grant research 10 grant projects have been elaborated at the department. The research program is chiefly focused on the following problems: the reconstruction of the climate and scenarios of climatic changes; the application of statistical methods in the analysis of time series; microclimate and topoclimate; climate of polar regions; the problems of atmospheric pollution; precipitation-runoff relation in selected watersheds; characterization of ecosystems according to their animal component, problems of the contemporary social and economic transformation of the Czech Republic; regional geographic studies of small territories; the preparation of data and the GIS management of chosen regions and their application to specific problems; the theory and methods of teaching geography. Information about grants and other scientific projects, soluted on the department, about international cooperation and co-operation with other Czech and foreign institutions are showed in next parts of this yearbook. Within the Department of Geography the Laboratory of Geoinformatics and Cartography is active in the field of GIS and remote sensing being the best equipped laboratory in the Moravian region. The Laboratory has many international co-operation contacts. Its members deal not only with scientific research within a grant program, but with several important business contracts (using student s activities). We can state that due to the activities of the members and their results and achievements the department belongs to the top geographical institutions in the Czech Republic and is comparable with similar institutions abroad.
