Cloud Computing as the Industrialization of IT (Sam Palmisano, 2009) It s about improved processes: evolution not revolution Cloud computing is not really new, which is why so many of its ingredients feel familiar. Rather, it represents a confluence of forces that have been building Enterprises spend a lot of time [ ] doing similar tasks in different ways. [ ] Cloud-based business services bring productivity and quality improvements Irving Wladawsky-Berger Chairman Emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology http://blog.irvingwb.com/blog/2009/12/cloud-computing-and-the-evolution-toward-the-outsidein-virtual-enterprise.html#more 8 2011 IBM Corporation

Cloud Infrastructure Workshop (CIW) Workshop Objective Provide Financial Analysis to Reduce Costs and Risks Help client rapidly evaluate the feasibility and estimate the expected cost and benefits of implementing private cloud. Provide general feasibility and estimated costs. Provide IT Optimization Recommendations Improve IT service, agility, scalability, availability Improve marketplace competitiveness Improve asset utilization Address server proliferation issues Provide guidance to move towards private cloud Cloud Infrastructure Workshop Explore the technical and financial feasibility of available optimization alternatives, including private cloud. Provide platform recommendations for tactical and strategic needs supported by high level business cases. 29 2011 IBM Corporation

Cloud Infrastructure Workshop Methodology Evaluate Optimization Practices Evaluate 6 key optimization practices that are critical to deploying and managing cloud Recommend improvements to these optimization practices to improve cloud readiness Evaluate Workload and Applications Provide a high level evaluation of client s IT environment. Provide strategic and tactical recommendations related to selected workloads Develop recommendations based on optimization practices & options, workload attributes and TCO Business Case TCO Build high-level TCO business cases for selected workloads in order to form a quantitative recommendation. Final Optimization Recommendations (with Business Cases) Private Cloud Public Cloud Iterate with recommendations if necessary. Customer- Owned Dynamic Infrastructure Customer-Owned Dedicated Computational Resources 30 2011 IBM Corporation

The team evaluates six optimization practices that are critical to deploying and managing a private cloud environment. Advanced virtualization and automated management Virtualization Server and Storage Resources Common components and processes Seamless integration of virtualized infrastructure Elastic Scaling Advanced security and resiliency Enterprise systems management Systems Management Cloud Infrastructure Workshop IT Business Practices Manage cloud across IT service lifecycle Develop virtualized cost allocation strategy Ability to account, budget, and charge effectively for virtualized workloads Financial Management Standardization and Automation Standardization and automation cut across all dimensions, but is critical to effective cloud deployment and management Solution must must consider hardware, software, service management (services) 31 2011 IBM Corporation

Understanding current and potential cloud readiness also helps to estimate ROI. Financial Management: Enhance Financial Management Practices by implementing automated usage based IT accounting and charging tool such as Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager (TUAM). Replace project-based budgeting with service model to lower total capacity Virtualization: Develop a pilot internal cloud for your x86 environment. Upgrade virtualization technologies IT business practices: Develop a service catalog and clear service levels Focus on Service Transition and Service Option, including capacity planning process. Improve incident and problem management processes within Service Operations 4 Enterprise deployment/integrated 3 Limited Deployment/Evaluation 2 Discovery 1 No Action 0 Automation and standardization: Start deploying tools to automate provisioning and IT Asset Management. Create self service portal for customer. Automate business practices to support virtualization and standardization strategies SAMPLE Systems Management: Deploy an enterprise wide systems management tool to lower capacity and reduce overhead costs. Implement policy driven systems management to reduce per unit costs Server and Storage Resources: Standardize on specific hardware platforms. Deploy hardware that scan support higher level of optimization. Leverage project to improve utilization and power consumption to other areas 32 2011 IBM Corporation

Thin provisioning The amount of physical storage used is less than the amount defined for the virtual workload, Optimal storage utilization across shared storage pool. Additional storage is provided dynamically when workloads expand Storage is released when workloads contract. Automates optimized storage utilization More cost-efficient use of storage resources Integrates multiple storage subsystems 45 2011 IBM Corporation

Reduce the complexity that must be managed. 2. Manage across the inherent complexity that will continue to exist. 2011 IBM Corporation 51

Asia Pacific Technical Enablement Conference Some Myths Versus Realities Myth IT infrastructures will become homogeneous You should replace everything you have with this new product All IT will move to a cloud utility model Reality Innovation is accelerating and will drive greater diversity IT infrastructures will become more modular using integrated scalable workload-optimized building blocks that hide much of their internal complexity The latest and greatest new products will soon become old stuff that lacks important functions and qualities. At any point in time, the best new products must coexist with existing assets Private, public, and hybrid clouds will play an important and growing role in the continuing evolution of IT The world we live in isn t about the next new thing but about how well new things can integrate with established applications and processes.
